  • Patent number: 11123407
Abstract: A method of treating or preventing impaired mobility in an older adult includes administering to the older adult an effective amount of a composition containing at least one ingredient for cognitive ability, at least one ingredient for muscle and/or bone quality, and at least one ingredient for joint quality and/or functionality. The older adult can be an elderly individual and/or can have a condition that is one or more of frailty, pre-frailty, sarcopenia, recovering from sarcopenia, malnutrition, at risk of malnutrition, undergoing rehabilitation, and being scheduled to undergo rehabilitation, disorders impacting mobility such as osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, pre-osteoarthritis, osteopenia, cognitive decline. In a non-limiting example of the composition, the at least one ingredient for muscle and/or bone quality and the at least one ingredient for joint quality include a protein source, omega-3 fatty acids, and a polyphenol.

  • Patent number: 9943559
Abstract: The present disclosure relates to nutritional compositions containing a fiber blend that includes soluble fibers that are fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS), acacia gum and inulin and also includes insoluble fibers that are outer pea fibers. In an embodiment, the fiber blend includes about 50% soluble fibers and about 50% insoluble fibers, and the soluble fibers are FOS in an amount of about 41% by weight of the soluble fibers, acacia gum in an amount of about 41% by weight of the soluble fibers, and inulin in an amount of about 18% by weight of the soluble fibers. In such an embodiment, the insoluble fibers are outer pea fibers. The present disclosure also relates to methods that include administering a therapeutically effective amount of a fiber blend that includes FOS, acacia gum, inulin and outer pea fibers to a patient after antibiotic treatment.

  • Patent number: 9930908
Abstract: Nutritional compositions having high amounts of protein and low ratios of omega-6:omega-3 fatty acids, and methods of making and using the nutritional compositions are provided. The nutritional compositions include an increased amount of protein, and a low ratio of omega-6:omega-3 fatty acids to provide a patient with adequate amounts of protein for the preservation of lean body mass, while reducing inflammation associated with administration of pro-inflammatory drug formulations such as propofol. The nutritional compositions also help to avoid potential complications associated with overfeeding of an enterally-fed patient being treated, or having been treated, with high fat medications such as propofol. Methods of making and using such nutritional compositions are also provided.

  • Publication number: 20140056862
Abstract: Nutritional compositions for maximizing muscle protein synthesis while minimizing the catabolism of muscle proteins and methods of using same are provided. In this manner, the nutritional compositions may provide for retention of lean body mass, which helps to avoid loss of independence and functionality, as well as to improve quality of life especially in the elderly at risk of sarcopenia and frailty. The nutritional compositions include ?-hydroxyisocaproic acid and ?-ketoglutarate. The composition may include other functional ingredients such as, but not limited to whey protein including whey protein micelles, prebiotic fibers, citrulline, eicosapentaenoic acid, L-carnitine, nucleotides, and amino acids. Methods of administering such nutritional products to individuals in need of same are also provided.
