  • Patent number: 8920197
Abstract: Connector receptacles that are simple to assemble, provide good shielding, and consume a reduced or limited amount of space inside a device enclosure. To simplify assembly, these receptacles may include a subassembly that is inserted into a hollow tongue. The subassembly may include a first number of contacts that are insert molded in a first overmold, as well as a second number of contacts that may be inserted into a second overmold. To improve ground shielding, one or more ground contacts at a front of the receptacle may be split to provide shielding in a back of the receptacle. The tongue may further include ground contacts on its edges and top. Edge ground contacts may be inserted into the hollow tongue either separately or with the subassembly. Openings in the hollow tongue may expose portions of the edge ground contacts for grounding.

  • Publication number: 20140377589
Abstract: The embodiments of the present invention relate to a magnetic read head with pinned layers extending to the ABS of the read head and in contact with an antiferromagnetic layer that is recessed in relation to the ABS of the read head. The recessed antiferromagnetic layer may be disposed above or below the pinned layer structure and provides a pinning field to prevent amplitude flipping in head operation. In these embodiments of the present invention, the read gap of the sensor, that is the distance between the highly permeable, magnetically soft upper and lower shield layers at the ABS, is reduced by the thickness of the antiferromagnetic layer.

  • Publication number: 20140360749
Abstract: Bus bar or power connector connections that are reliable and provide a reduced connection impedance. One example may provide a reliable connection by providing a spring plate. The spring plate may be arranged to hold a bus bar or other power conductor to a printed circuit board. The spring plate may further include an opening for a fastener, where the fastener is used to secure the bus bar to the printed circuit board. In this way, the spring plate may secure the bus bar to the printed circuit board in the event that the fastener is loosened or missing, thereby increasing the reliability of the bus bar connection. Further, the spring plate may provide an additional current path, thereby reducing the impedance of the bus bar connection.

  • Patent number: 8905795
Abstract: Spring-loaded contacts having an improved reliability. One example may provide spring-loaded contacts having a reduced likelihood of entanglement between a spring and a plunger. For example, a piston may be placed between a plunger and a spring. The piston may have a head portion that is wider than the diameter of the spring and located between the spring and the plunger to isolate the spring and the plunger. In these and other examples, an additional object, such as a sphere, may be placed between the plunger and spring. In another example, two additional objects, such as two spheres, may be placed between a plunger and piston.

  • Patent number: 8873204
Abstract: A two-dimensional magnetic recording (TDMR) read head structure has the lower read sensor free layer magnetization biased by side shields of soft magnetic material. A center shield between the lower and upper sensors is an antiparallel coupled magnetic structure, i.e., first and second ferromagnetic layers separated by an antiparallel coupling (APC) layer. The first ferromagnetic layer is ferromagnetically exchange coupled to the side shields of the lower sensor to stabilize the magnetization of the lower sensor's free layer. The first ferromagnetic layer of the center shield is a multilayer of a lower NiFe layer and an upper CoFeB alloy layer inserted below the APC layer. The CoFeB alloy insertion layer increases the antiparallel coupling of the first and second ferromagnetic layers of the center shield after two orthogonal anneals so that the magnetization of the first ferromagnetic layer is aligned parallel to the air-bearing surface (ABS) of the TDMR structure.

  • Publication number: 20140273654
Abstract: Circuits, methods, and apparatus that may provide audio jacks capable of providing a sufficient retention force to avoid some inadvertent extractions of an audio plug. Examples may also provide audio jacks that may be readily assembled. Other examples may provide other types of connectors. These audio jacks or other connectors may provide contact structures having one or more contacts, each having a contact support to increase contact retention force. Different materials may be used to form the contacts and the contact supports. In this way, contacts may be formed using a highly conductive material, while the contact supports may be formed of a material having good spring characteristics. While such a contact may not be able to provide an adequate retention force on its own, the use of a contact support may sufficiently increase the retention force to prevent accidental extractions of an audio plug or other connector.

  • Patent number: 8808030
Abstract: Structures, methods, and apparatus that provide connector receptacles that have a reduced tendency to scratch and otherwise mar connector inserts, have an aesthetically-pleasing appearance, and have an improved tactile response when inserts are inserted. Various examples reduce scratches and wear by utilizing domes, cylinders, balls, or other structures as finger contacts in a connector receptacle. Another example provides aesthetically-pleasing connector receptacle enclosures by forming receptacle enclosures using the same type of material, or material having the same or similar color or texture, as is used for enclosing the electronic device that includes the receptacle. Another example provides an aesthetically-pleasing receptacle enclosure by forming receptacle enclosures that are, in part or in whole, contiguous or formed with the housing. Another embodiment provides a connector receptacle having a housing where a portion of the housing has been removed to save space.

  • Patent number: 8772654
Abstract: Circuits, methods, and apparatus that may provide for reliable detection of electrical and optical audio plugs. One example may detect an optical audio plug by employing one or more mechanical detect switches. These switches may include a first contacting portion and a second contacting portion that are separated from each other when an audio plug is inserted into the audio jack. The second contacting portion may include one or more arms to contact a surface portion of the first contacting portion. The first contacting portion and the second contacting portion may be biased such that they tend to stay in contact with each other as the first contacting portion begins to be deflected by the insertion of an audio plug, thereby wiping dust or debris from between the first contacting portion and the second contacting portion.
