The design of the disclosed nanoparticles (NPs) allows controlled release of DOX inside neutrophils, thus avoiding systemic toxicity. One such beneficial method for treating a subject neutrophil-inflammatory infection or tissue injury response includes administering a topoisomerase-conjugated albumin protein nanoparticles (NPs) composition to the subject, wherein the composition includes an effective amount so as to induce apoptosis of neutrophils, wherein the neutrophil induced inflammatory response is lower following the administration of the composition.
