    Abstract: A high speed, reliable receptacle connector including a shell and a terminal subassembly disposed in the shell, with terminal mating ends extending to an opening of the shell and tail ends extending out of the shell. A component at least partially adjacent the top of the shell is configured to engage an exterior of a chassis of an electronic device when the connector is disposed inside the chassis with the opening of the shell aligned with a port of the chassis. A locating member is attached to the bottom wall of the shell. The locating member has a post extending downwardly and a projection extending upwardly into the shell to latch to the subassembly housing. The terminal subassembly has a shielding member disposed between two rows of terminals and having apertures disposed for reducing crosstalks and balancing impedance and easy manufacturing of the subassembly housing.

A member is disposed outside the main shell and configured for blocking light from exiting the main shell through a front opening and/or a port of a device chassis in which the connector is disposed. The member can include one or more films overlapping with the engaging portions and associated gaps and/or an outer shell disposed outside the main shell. A front portion of the outer shell can overlap with the engaging portions and associated gaps and/or be disposed outside the films. The front portion may include bulges that deflect light.

    Abstract: A reliable receptacle connector and method of manufacturing thereof. The connector includes a terminal assembly having conductive elements held by a housing. Each conductive element has a mating end held by a housing tongue, a tail end extending outside the housing, and an intermediate portion partially held by portions of the housing that have different contours. The terminal assembly can be formed by assembling terminal subassemblies on opposite sides of a shield and molding over the assembly to form the housing. An inner shell is sleeved on the housing and engages with both portions of the housing that have different contours. A main shell is sleeved on the inner shell. An outer shell is sleeved on the main shell and shaped such that a seal can be formed between the shells. Such a configuration enables distributing forces to mate/unmate the connector from the shells to the housing and therefore reduces relevant movements between the components of the connector.

    Abstract: A compact, reliable receptacle connector. The connector comprises terminals held by an assembly housing. A shell surrounds mating ends of the terminals and engages with the assembly housing. A housing is disposed outside the shell and partially encloses a rear of the shell. A board lock is also partially embedded in the housing. Such a configuration enables the connector to have a single shell and reduces the risk of relevant movements between the shell/board lock and the housing when, for example, a component is inserted into or removed from the connector. The connector can comprise a front seal disposed around a portion of the shell that extends beyond the housing, and a rear seal disposed between a top of the housing and a bottom of the shell. Such a configuration can effectively block ingress of environmental contaminants from both the front and the rear.

    Abstract: An integrated sealed electrical connector. The connector includes a housing holding conductive elements in a row. The housing has a body, a tongue extending from the body in a mating direction, and a bracket extending from a side of the body. Each conductive element has a mating portion held by the tongue. A frame is partially embedded in and partially disposed outside the housing to, for example, mount to a board. The frame and bracket have aligned holes configured for receiving, e.g., a screw to mount to the board. Some conductive elements are configured for transmitting power and have a uniform thickness; and others are configured for transmitting signals and have a smaller thickness at the mating portion. Front and rear seals are attached to rough surfaces of the housing and conductive elements, respectively. Such techniques enable a securely sealed hybrid connector capable of reliable mating/mounting within a small space.

A front seal made of an adhesive can be shaped and cured when disposed on a rough portion of the main shell. A rear seal can be disposed in the main shell and join the rear portion of the housing with the housing portion inside the main shell.

    Abstract: Reliable compact receptacle connector. A connector includes a terminal assembly with a housing body and a tongue extending from the body. An inner shell surrounds the terminal assembly and has a tail end with inward portions protruding to the body. The tail end of the inner shell also includes arms disposed beyond the terminal assembly and engaging a rear surface of the terminal assembly. Both the inward portions and arms are integrally formed with the inner shell. Such a configuration enables a single inner shell to restrain movement of the terminal assembly under a mating force. An outer shell is disposed outside the inner shell. The inner shell includes outward protrusions that engage a mating end of an outer shell to restrain its movement under a mounting force. A seal made of an adhesive can be shaped and cured when disposed on a rough portion of the inner shell.

The member may position the connector on the circuit board. The member may also electrically couple the shell to ground structures in the circuit board. Such a configuration reduces the risk of misaligning the connector with the circuit board due to, for example, relative movements between a positioning member of the connector and the other components of the connector.

    Abstract: Electrical connectors with improved water resistance. A connector may have an outer shell and an inner shell disposed in the outer shell. The inner shell may extend beyond the outer shell in a mating direction. A portion of the inner shell that extends beyond the outer shell in the mating direction may have a surface roughness higher than portions of the inner shell such that a seal can be securely attached to the rough portion of the inner shell. The seal can be made of an adhesive shaped and cured when disposed on the rough portion. The seal can be spaced from the outer shell such that the seal can abut a mating component when the connector is pressed, in the mating direction, against the mating component, blocking ingress of environmental contaminants. The seal may also block any path between the mating ends of the inner and outer shells.

A lead assembly may be partially disposed in the inner shell. A mating end of one of the outer shell and inner shell may extend beyond a mating end of the other shell, defining a corner. A seal may be disposed in the corner, such that the seal is mechanically supported when the connector is pressed, in a mating direction, against a mating component, blocking ingress of environmental contaminants. The seal may also block any opening between the mating end of the outer and inner shells. The seal is made from a curable material such that it may readily fill such an opening. The connector may also have a body seal in the lead assembly.
