    Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing smooth stream switching in video and/or audio encoding and decoding may be provided. Smooth stream switching may include the generation and/or display of one or more transition frames that may be utilized between streams of media content encoded at different rates. The transition frames may be generated via crossfading and overlapping, crossfading and transcoding, post-processing techniques using filtering, post-processing techniques using re-quantization, etc. Smooth stream switching may include receiving a first data stream of media content characterized by a first signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and a second data stream of the media content characterized by a second SNR. Transition frames may be generated using at least one of frames of the first data stream and frames of the second data stream. The transition frames may be characterized by one or more SNR values that are between the first SNR and the second SNR.

    Abstract: A system and method for region-of-interest-based bit-allocation scheme for video coding is provided. A method for encoding an image sequence of inter-frames and intra-frames includes grouping the inter-frames and the intra-frames in at least one group of pictures (GOP), and performing a frame-level bit-allocation to inter-frames and the intra-frames in the GOP. For each frame of the inter-frames and the intra-frames in the GOP, the method also includes partitioning the frame into a plurality of macroblocks, identifying macroblocks in the plurality of macroblocks as having regions of interest (ROI), and performing a macroblock level bit-allocation for the frame based on macroblocks identified as having ROI. The method further includes encoding the image sequence based on the bit-allocations, thereby producing an encoded image sequence, and outputting the encoded image sequence.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for increasing virtual storage capacity in on-demand storage systems. The method utilizes data compression to selectively compress data stored in a storage resource to reduce the utilization of physical storage space whenever such physical resources have been over committed and the demand for physical storage exceeds its availability. In one exemplary embodiment, the utilization of the capacity of a shared storage resource is monitored and data is selected for compression based on the utilization. The compression of the selected data is triggered in response to the monitoring results. In addition, policies and rules are defined that determine which data is selected for compression.
