    Abstract: A method for reducing spatter in the short-circuit transfer gas shielded arc welding is disclosed. In this method, the resistance changing rate or the impedance changing rate of the welding circuit loop is detected for estimating the diameter of the short-circuit liquid bridge. When the diameter of the short-circuit liquid bridge shrinks to the preset value, the short-circuit bridge current is bypassed or shunted by the current closed loop feedback bypass control, and the current is decreased to a very low level rapidly and maintained this level until the bridge is broken, which results in a gentle and smooth drop transfer in a low current level condition, so as to avoid the mass spatter. Furthermore, a system for performing the method has also been disclosed.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus are described for prolonging the usage life of an optical element under the irradiation of an intensive laser beam. The method employs a continuous mechanical motion to enlarge the effective interaction area and the volume of the laser beam within the optical element. In an embodiment, the apparatus is used for harmonic generation of a laser beam within a BBO crystal. A motor is used to drive the BBO crystal mounted on a pair of translation slides. The crystal is moved on a circular path spiraling within a predetermined area while its optical axis remains in the same orientation in relation to a laser beam. The phase matching angle of the BBO is maintained during the movement, and the usage life of the BBO crystal is increased by many orders of magnitude.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for arc welding particularly regarding a pulse arc welding machine comprising a welding power source having an output characteristic control circuit, an overload protection circuit, a driving circuit, and a main power circuit, and a wire feeding unit having a wire feeding control circuit, a motor driving circuit and a wire feed motor. The output characteristic control circuit comprises a welding arc autoregulating control system which provides the power source with a multi-segmental and moving output characteristic with varying slope, a circuit for connecting arbitrary number of output characteristic segments with arbitrary or varying slope, and a scanning circuit for obtaining the output characteristic segment with varying slope. A particular use of the control system is in an easy to operate autoregulating controlled GMA welding machine with one-knob control of wire feed rate without having to adjust the other welding parameters.
