The smectic A phase liquid crystal material of the present invention may further contain at least one ester compound and an ionic compound. By using the smectic A phase liquid crystal material in a display device, a displayed image can be completely erased without any residual images after a long-term placement or a long-term drive, the contrast is generally higher than 10, and the drive voltage is generally 20 to 50 V.
