  • Publication number: 20140182799
Abstract: The invention provides methods and compositions for increasing the strengthening effect of a starch coating on paper. The method involves contacting the starch with a synthetic polymer before the starch is cooked. This changes how the starch gelatinizes and how the polymer gets distributed on the paper resulting in greater paper surface strength.

  • Publication number: 20100159164
Abstract: The invention provides an ink jet recording sheet which is highly resistant to printings smearing, running, feathering, color bleeding, or fading when wet, humid, or exposed to intense or continual light. The recording sheet has a solid substrate and a composition coating the solid substrate. The composition comprises a cationic polymer as well as starch, inorganic salt, pigment, and water. The composition can further comprise a non-ionic polymer. The coating tightly binds both pigment based inkjet inks and dye based inkjet inks. The composition is easy to apply and the ink jet recording sheet can be easily formed with a standard size press device.

  • Patent number: 7283692
Abstract: A compact interrogator for the simultaneous interrogation of multi wavelength-modulated fiber optical sensors, includes a planar waveguide based demultiplexer receiving input signals from the sensors. An array of detectors is coupled to output waveguides of the demultiplexer corresponding to different nominal wavelengths. A tuning element matches the nominal wavelengths of the output waveguide to the input signals from the respective sensors to find the wavelengths of the individual sensors to be interrogated.

  • Patent number: 6917747
Abstract: An integrated optical dynamic channel equalizer that can be employed to equalize the channel gain level in a WDM transmission line and monitor the optical channel performance. The device consists of a circulator, a dynamic gain equalizer chip and a controller. Due to the simplicity of the dynamic gain equalizer chip, which includes one 1×n multiplexer/demultiplexer, an n-channel variable optical attenuator array (VOA-n), a partially transparent dielectric reflective means and an n-channel detector array, the device is very compact and can be fabricated at low cost. By placing a quarter wave plate between the n-channel variable optical attenuator array and the partially transparent reflective means in the dynamic channel equalizer chip, the device can be rendered polarization insensitive.

  • Patent number: 6643589
Abstract: Measurements made by a multicomponent logging tool in a borehole are inverted to obtain horizontal and vertical resistivities and formation dip and azimuth angles of a formation traversed by the borehole. The inversion is performed using a generalized Marquardt-Levenberg method. In this generalized Marquardt-Levenberg method, a data objective function is defined that is related to a difference between the model output and the measured data. The iterative procedure involves reducing a global objective function that is the sum of the data objective function and a model objective function related to changes in the model in successive iterations. In an alternate embodiment of the invention, the formation azimuth angle is excluded from the iterative process by using derived relations between the multicomponent measurements.
