Abstract: The invention uses a smartphone activation sequence for administration of a memory task. This may take the form of a pin code (or other N-digit sequence selected from a group of symbols). This code must be entered by the user before being able to use the phone. The symbols are eliminated from the display after a certain initial period, being replaced with placemarks. Thus the user must not only remember the required symbols from time to time, but must also quickly observe and remember the locations of the required symbols, before they are replaced with placemarks.

Abstract: The invention comprises systems and methods for the assessment of mental state by means of analysis of key words or phrases written or spoken by a subject. These elements are detected for instance through use of a smartphone app and/or bespoke software keyboard, and their occurrence is logged and analyzed, either locally or remotely. Text and speech may both be analyzed for purposes of the invention, which analyzes key words/phrases for example in terms of their emotional or psychological content, for example counting expressions of positive or negative feelings, attitudes, or other categories. By analysis of frequency of such usages, an estimate or reflection of mental state of the typist is built. Diagnosis of various conditions may thus be carried out, especially by watching how the frequencies and/or percentages of such key elements change over time.

Abstract: The invention comprises a system and method for analyzing the use of ‘delete’ and/or ‘backspace’ keys generally reserved for erasing entered text. Single backspace strokes record errors on the level of single letters, while multiple backspace strokes are used to erase an entire word or phrase; these two types of mistakes are qualitatively different and are used to analyze the mental state of the typist, by use of software keyboards, keyloggers, or the like running on a smartphone or other computing platform.

Abstract: An application is employed on a smartphone which is adapted for vision processing of the user's face, in particular being adapted to detect when the user blinks. Other facial expressions may likewise be analyzed and detected. Occurrences of blinking and possibly various other facial expressions are logged, locally and/or to a remote server in communication with the application.

The touch-sensitive surface of a smartphone or other touchscreen, accelerometer, magnetometer, inclinometer, gyro, GPS, camera, and microphone may amongst other sensors be used to record user responses to a login challenge. This challenge may consist of a requirement to give a correct password or numerical code; a puzzle (such as a methamatical or textual riddle), identification of digits, objects, or faces; and other challenges or actions.
