  • Publication number: 20070178353
Abstract: The invention relates to the field of electrical engineering and can be used in the production of electrodes for alkaline fuel cells. An object of the invention is to increase the electrode service life. According to the invention, an electrode of an alkaline fuel cell comprises an insulating frame having ports for feeding and discharging reagents, a mesh current collector embedded in the frame and having lead-outs extending beyond the frame, an active and a barrier layers sequentially applied onto the mesh current collector, wherein sites of the embedment of the current collector and the lead-outs in the insulating frame and a periphery of the current collector along an inner edge of the insulating frame are provided with a sealing layer which can be made of an electrolyte non-wettable substance, e.g. with a sealing layer made of fluoroplastic.

  • Publication number: 20060123989
Abstract: The invention relates to auxiliary systems ensuring functioning of alkaline fuel cell (AFC), in particular to a method and device for sorptive purification of air used in an AFC of carbon dioxide. In accordance with the invention, in the method for purifying air for a fuel cell, the starting air is passed through an adsorber with an adsorbent of carbon dioxide, then the adsorbent is regenerated. After utilization the adsorbent comprising hydrated oxides of transition metals is regenerated at a temperature of 60-120° C. by the air spent in the fuel cell. The air fed for regeneration is heated until a relative humidity of from 15 to 85% is achieved.

  • Publication number: 20060110653
Abstract: The invention relates to the field of fuel cells, in particular to alcohol-air fuel cells (AAFC) and may be used during the production of generators on the base of these AAFC. In accordance with the invention AAFC comprises an anode chamber with liquid catalytically active anode, an air chamber with catalytically active gas-diffusion cathode, an electrolyte chamber with a liquid electrolyte and membrane electrolyte, wich is positioned between the cathode and the anode, wherein an aqueous alkaline solution is used as the liquid electrolyte and a non-platinum catalyst, tolerant in respect to alcohole, is used as the cathode catalist. The object of the invention is to create an AAFC that has high efficiency and is inexpensive.

  • Publication number: 20060099484
Abstract: The invention relates to the field of alcohol-air fuel cells (FC) designed for use in portable radio-electronic equipment, such as cellular phones, notebooks, etc. In accordance with the invention a fuel cell FC comprises a housing with arranged therein a liquid catalytically active anode, an air catalytically active hydrophobic gas-diffusion cathode, a liquid alcohol-alkaline mixture filling the interior cavity of the housing and separating the anode and cathode, wherein the hydrophobic surface of the cathode faces air. The surface of the cathode facing the alcohol-alkaline mixture is coated with a layer of a polymer, for example polybenzimidazole, having conduction in respect to OH? ions. A non-platinum catalyst on the base of metals Fe, Ni, Co, Ru, that is tolerant in respect to alcohol, is used as the cathode catalyst.
