  • Publication number: 20210206685
Abstract: A method for separating a glass sheet from a glass ribbon is provided in which the glass ribbon has a bead region and a quality region. The method includes scoring a score line across a surface of the quality region and applying an energy source, such as a burner or laser, to at least one surface of the bead region so as to generate a thermal gradient between the surface and the center of the bead region in the thickness direction.

  • Publication number: 20080202167
Abstract: A thermal edge finishing process includes preheating at least one cut edge of a glass sheet, laser finishing the edge to a single full continuous radius from a position orthogonal to the edge and in-plane with the glass sheet while continuing to heat the glass, and localized annealing of the edge to reduce residual stress from the laser/thermal treatment of the edge. By the present process, edge stress is reduced considerably, such as to less than 3000 psi, and more preferably to less than 2500 psi, and to as low as 1000 psi in the first 1 mm along the treated edge.

  • Publication number: 20080041833
Abstract: A thermal edge-finishing process includes pre-heating an edge of a glass sheet, focused heating inboard of the edge to cause thermal tensioning, laser finishing the edge, and localized annealing of the edge. By stress cancellation, the thermal energy added by a laser edge-finishing operation does not result in as much residual stress. By the present process, residual stress is reduced to below 3000 psi, and more preferably to about 1000 psi, and as low as 600 psi in the first 1 mm along the treated edge.

  • Patent number: 5632794
Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method and an apparatus for forming glass articles from molten glass involving differentially cooling a plunger for press forming glass articles in a cooperative forming mold. More specifically, the method involves introducing cooling fluid into an inlet cooling cavity located in the upper portion of the plunger and causing the cooling fluid to flow from the inlet cooling cavity into a cooling passage located along the periphery of the nose portion and thereafter to flow into a outlet cooling cavity located in the upper portion of the plunger and thereafter exhausting the spent cooling fluid from the plunger.

  • Patent number: 4790867
Abstract: Method and apparatus is set forth for cooling glass molding equipment such that the thermal considerations of the equipment design and the mechanical considerations thereof are uncoupled. The uncoupling of the thermal and mechanical considerations facilitates the utilization of the forming member at varying production speeds, since different cooling inserts, having the desired thermal characteristics for the particular production speed utilized, may be provided within the forming member. In order to effect good heat transfer between the forming member and the cooling insert, a gap is provided which is substantially filled with a low melting metal alloy.
