A four in one tool kit device for the stripping of coatings, sanding, grinding, and wire-brushing of surfaces. A rotating assembly housing with one of four different tool accessories is mounted onto an electric powered, air powered or gasoline powered motor drive. The tool kit is also adapted with a dust and debris collection assembly to provide environmentally safe working conditions. The first tool accessory is a stripper having a cutting blade guard for guiding the cutting stripping action, a blade housing with cutting blades screwed to the rotating assembly housing. The second tool accessory has a flexible-backing pad, sanding pad, a sander spacer bushing held onto the rotating assembly housing by means of a lock nut. The third tool accessory has a grinder guard, backer shield, and grinder disc, held onto rotating assembly housing by a locking nut. The fourth tool accessory has a wire cup brush screwed onto the rotating assembly housing for wire brushing metal surfaces.

Description
FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0001] The invention is generally related to a device which adapts to any motor drive to strip coatings, sand, grind, and wire-brushes surfaces such as wood, fiberglass, steel, and resin of houses, buildings or boats.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTS OF THE INVENTION

[0002] There are many chemicals and tools used for removal of coatings from wood, fiberglass, steel and resin. Chemicals are expensive, time consuming and require de-neutralization of the stripped surface. Electric heat plates and open flames are other methods for coating removal which are time consuming and dangerous as they could cause fires. Other mechanical methods such as abrasive sheet (i.e. sandpaper) wherein friction and abrasion of hard particular matter against coating film are used for removal. Such removal methods cause clogging of the sand paper causing down time in sandpaper replacement and a considerable cost to purchase many sanding pads. Other methods are known such as hand wire brushing and scraping both are labor intensive and can cause damage to the wood, fiberglass, steel, and resin surfaces.

[0003] There are many prior art rotary resurfacing tools on the market, but they are usually designed to be specific for a particular purpose. Some patented examples are as follows: Zayat U.S. Pat. No. 4,554,957, Rotary Resurfacing Tool, claims a device capable of resurfacing two surfaces with a rotating disc. The surfaces being the flat vertical major surface and an adjacent overlying horizontal surface. Koeling U.S. Pat. No. 2,610,658, Under Door Frame Saw claims a rotary saw operable in a horizontal plane. It is used for trimming off the lower edges of door frames. Weiting U.S. Pat. No. 2,741,282, Adjustable Guard and Depth Gauge for a Power Operated Disc Saw, claims a casing tool with adjustable depth means for cutting slots of channels. Weber U.S. Pat. No. 2,952,281, Portable Undercutting and Routing device, claims a portable cutting machine for cutting structural members adjacent to floors or obstructions. Kolesh U.S. Pat. No. 3,537,491, Cutting Tools, claims a novel type of cutting tool for making smooth cuts in soft materials.

[0004] There are no known devices or a tool kit device for accomplishing the objects of the present invention; namely: stripping, sanding, grinding, and brushing of surfaces all in one device.

[0005] Accordingly, several objects and advantages of the invention are provided in a tool which uses any motor drive to operate the device having four different tool accessories for the following resurfacing purposes: stripping, sanding, grinding, and wire-brushing. The tool can be used on any type of surface including wood, fiberglass, steel and resin surfaces. The present invention overcomes the problems of existing devices, namely, having to purchase, (at great cost), different machines for stripping, sanding, grinding, and wire-brushing. These and other objects of the present invention are accomplished through a rotating assembly housing capable of being mounted with four different accessories. A first object of the invention is to provide a stripping device having a blade housing with cutting blades which adjust inward and outward by using a number of spacer washers mounted on the drive shaft motor allowing for adjustment in different depths of cut required to remove coatings from flat surfaces. A second object of the invention is to provide a sanding tool having a mounting backer and sanding pad onto the rotating assembly housing to be used as a power sander. A third object of the present invention is to provide a grinding tool having a grinding disc mounted onto the rotating assembly housing. A fourth object of the present invention is to provide a wire brushing tool having a wire cup brush mounted to the rotating assembly housing. Another object of the invention is to provide a stripping, sanding, grinding, wire brushing tool kit with a dust and debris collection system that is environmentally safe.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0006] The invention consists of a rotating assembly housing with the stripping, sanding, grinding, and wire-brushing accessories mounted thereon which mounts onto a motor drive with a drive shaft. The user can use an existing power tool with a universal shaft and mount the present invention thereto.

[0007] The tool kit device allows a user to strip coatings, sand, grind, and wire-brush surfaces by means of mounting a rotating assembly housing with one of four different tool accessories installed thereon onto an electric powered, air powered or gasoline powered motor drive. The rotating assembly housing of the present inventions allows a user to have four tools in one device. In the preferred embodiment, the tool kit is adapted with a dust and debris collection system. The first tool accessory having a blade guard for guiding the cutting stripping action and a blade housing with cutting blades mounted to the rotating assembly housing. The second tool accessory having a flexible-backing pad, sanding pad, sander spacer bushing held onto the rotating assembly housing by means of a lock nut. The third tool accessory having a grinder guard, backer shield, and grinder disc, held onto the rotating assembly housing by a means of a lock nut. The fourth tool accessory having a wire cup brush mounted on the rotating assembly housing. All four tool accessories after being mounted to the rotating assembly housing are adapted to one power motor drive.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0018] FIGS. 1, 2, and 4 show the device 8 of the present invention which is normally adapted to be hand held and placed against a surface such as wood shingles, wood clapboards, fiberglass or metal surface. The device 8 comprises a rotating assembly housing 10 that is mountable onto a motor drive 30 at the drive shaft 11 and having four interchangeable and separate tool accessories.

[0019] In operation, FIGS. 1, 2, and 4 show a motor drive 30 driven by electricity, air or gasoline that drives the shaft 11 of the rotating assembly housing 10. Bearings 12 for shaft extension 16 mounted onto drive shaft 11 with plunger retaining holes 38.

[0020] FIG. 3 illustrates, the first tool accessory, a coating stripping tool accessory having a cutting blade housing 18 with cutting blades 20, and cutting blade guard 28 which screws onto assembly housing 10 which is mounted on the shaft extension 16. Cutting blade guard 28 is used to guide the coating stripping action across surfaces to be stripped. To set the accessory tool cutting action depth, adjustable spacer washers 32 are mounted onto the drive shaft extension 16 in various numbers allowing the stripper blade housing 18 to adjust inward and outward to set the depth of the cutting action. To change the depth, a number of space washers 32 are manually removed or added as needed. The particular construction of the rotating assembly housing 10 including a drive shaft extension 16, bearings 12, grip handle 24, cutting blade housing 18 with cutting blades 20, cutting blade guard 28, dust collector 26, and spacer washers 32 and shown with the first tool accessory. First tool accessory, the stripping tool, has the ability to strip various coatings from flat surfaces shown in FIG. 3 and in the preferred embodiment to collect the stripped debris into a vacuum system making stripping function operation environmentally safe. Cutting blade guard 28 rides on the surface, keeping the stripping action of cutting blades 20 at the correct depth setting achieved with spacer washers 32.

[0021] FIG. 5 shows the second tool accessory, the sanding tool accessory, comprising a sander accessory bushing (not shown) which mounts the tool accessory to the rotating housing assembly 10, a sanding pad 50, a fiberglass backing pad (not shown) under the sanding pad, with lock nut 46 used to secure all parts onto the rotating assembly housing 10. To convert device 8 into a power sanding tool with dust collector 26 remove cutting blade housing 18 and cutting blade guard 28, spacer washers 32, mount sander accessory bushing 44 on drive shaft extension 16 followed by fiberglass backing pad 48 and sanding pad 50 secured by lock nut 46 securing all parts forming the sanding tool accessory. This tool accessory assembly sands various flat surfaces, and in the preferred embodiment collects sanded debris into dust collector 26 connected to vacuum system 62.

[0022] FIG. 6, illustrates the third tool accessory, grinding tool accessory, comprising the grinder guard 52, metal backer shield (not shown), grinder disk 54, and locking nut 56 used to secure all parts onto the rotating assembly housing 10. This tool may be used without a guard when the vacuum shield is in place. To convert device 8 into a grinder tool remove any other tool accessory in place and, mount and install, in sequence, grinder guard 52, metal backer shield 58 onto drive shaft extension 16 and then grinder disk 54, all are secured by lock nut 56.

[0023] FIG. 7 illustrates the fourth tool accessory, wire brush tool accessory, comprising a wire cup brush 60 screwed onto the drive shaft extension 16 of the rotating assembly housing 10. To convert device 8 into a tool with wire brushing tool, remove any other tool accessory in place and screw on wire cup brush 60 to drive shaft extension 16 producing a tool that can wire-brush coatings from surfaces requiring preparation for re-coating.

[0024] Generally, the tool kit device with the accessory tools for stripping, sanding, grinding and wire-brushing can be mounted on any variety of motor drives 30, powered by electric, air, or gasoline saving the cost of having separate power motor drives. The description of the four tool accessories are illustrative only and that other parts may be utilized so long as the overall intended purposes of the invention are accomplished.

[0025] In the preferred embodiment, each of the four tool kit accessories are adapted with a dust collection system. The dust and debris collection system is illustrated in FIGS. 1, 4 and 6. The dust collector system 26 is attached to a vacuum system 62 by means of a vacuum hose 42. The dust collector plastic shield 26b keeps the dust and debris generated during operation of the power tool below the housing assembly 10 and directs the dust and debris to the dust collector exit port 26a. The dust collector nylon bristles 26c provide a barrier shield to direct dust to the dust collector exit port 26a so it will travel through the vacuum hose 42 to the vacuum system 62. The dust collector system provides environmentally safe working conditions. The plastic shield may be adapted with hinges 40 as shown in FIGS. 3, 4, and 6 for a flexing dust collector plastic shield 26b to allow for flexibility in the shield when working on uneven surfaces.

[0026] FIGS. 1, 6 and 8 illustrate the rotating assembly housing 10 with a handle extension 22 showing the tool kit device 8 adapted with a grip handle 24. As shown by the arrows in FIG. 8, the motor drive 30 can angle and be positioned in either continuous rotating angle alignment to the tool accessory or in fixed positioning operation. The ability of the rotating assembly housing to be used at any angle allows for a variety of positions when in use. To fix the operation position, the engaging screw plunger 36 mounted on extension arm position mechanism 34 is screwed into the plunger retainer hole 38. The user may prefer to have the motor drive fixed relative to the tool accessory.

[0027] While there is shown and described herein certain specific structures embodying the invention, it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various modifications and rearrangements of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the underlying inventive concept and that the same is not limited to the particular forms herein shown and described except insofar as indicated by the scope of the appended claims.

Claims

1.) A rotating assembly housing device is designed for converting one power tool driven by electric, air, or gasoline power source into a plurality of tools comprising a rotating assembly housing device having a drive shaft and drive shaft extension on a first end which mounts to said power drive motor, wherein the rotating assembly housing is configured to accept on a second end a tool accessory taken from the following group: a stripping tool accessory to strip coatings from surfaces: or a sanding tool accessory for sanding surfaces; a grinding tool accessory for grinding surfaces; or a brushing tool accessory for wire brushing surfaces.

The rotating assembly housing device as set forth in claim 1, wherein the rotating assembly housing device stripping tool is adapted with a plurality of spacer washers that allow for adjustments in the cutting depth by adding or removing one or more spacer washers thereby allowing the blade housing and cutting blades to move inward and outward for various cutting depths.

The rotating assembly housing device as set forth in claim 1, wherein a blade guard is mounted on the second side of the rotating assembly housing device to guide the cutting action of the blade housing with cutting blades to produce an even parallel cutting action to the surface being stripped.

4.) The blade guard as set forth in claim 3 further comprising two adjusting screws mounted on the blade guard which are adjustable both inward and outward to adjust a secondary cutting action for stripping a surface perpendicular to a first surface being stripped.

5.) The rotating assembly housing device as set forth in claim 1, wherein on one side of the rotating assembly housing a handle extension with a grip handle is mounted to allow all the tool accessories to have continuous various angle positioning relative to the motor drive.

6.) The rotating assembly housing device as set forth in claim 1, which further comprises a mechanical device which fixes the motor drive relative to the rotating housing assembly.

7.) The rotating assembly housing device as set forth in claim 1 further comprising a dust and debris collection assembly allowing for the retrieval of all stripped debris and dust to be collected into a vacuum system by way of an exit port.

8.) The dust collector assembly of claim 6 which further comprises a clear plastic shield with flexible bristles around the circumference to compensate for the various irregularities found on surfaces.
