Reciprocating wire brush

Abstract

A reciprocating wire brush is provided with a shank portion to which is attached metal bristles, the shank portion being adapted to be received by and secured to a reciprocating saw chuck in the same manner as a traditional reciprocating saw blade, and the device being useful in cleaning metal or other surfaces for which a manually operated wire brush would be used.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0003] The present invention relates to the field of power tool attachments, and more specifically to wire brush attachments for reciprocating saws. These types of attachments are generally known in the art, as exemplified by U.S. Pat. No. 6,237,179 B1 to Balceiro.

[0004] The device disclosed in the Balceiro patent, while adequate to perform the function of a wire brush attachment, is deficient in some respects relating to wire brush function within small spaces and to manufacturing cost considerations. Consequently, there exists a need to improve upon its basic design limitations. It is the objective of the present invention to provide a wire brush attachment for reciprocating saws that will function more satisfactorily in confined spaces, as well as provide a design that is less expensive to manufacture.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0005] It is an object of the present invention to provide a cost-effective device comprising a wire brush attachment adapted to fit the chuck of conventional reciprocating saws such as jigsaws and sawzalls.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

[0012] This invention is directed to a Reciprocating Wire Brush 50. The Reciprocating Wire Brush 50 comprises a shank portion 10 and bristles 30. The shank portion 10 has a first end 12 and a second end 14, and has a front side 16 and a back side 18. The first end 12 of the shank can be adapted to be secured by a chuck of a reciprocating type saw 40, such as a “sawzall” and a jigsaw.

[0013] The bristles 30 can be attached to the front side 16 of the second end 14 of the shank 10. The bristles 30 can alternatively be attached to the back side 18 of the second end 14 of the shank 10.

[0014] The bristles 30 can be constructed of metal wire. The bristles 30 further comprise a first end 31 and a second end 33. The first end 31 of the bristles can be attached to the shank 10, and the second end 33 can be adapted to engage an object to be brushed. The second end 33 of the bristles can be constructed so as to form a flat shape when viewed from the first end of the device toward the second end of the device, as shown in FIG. 4. Alternatively, the second end 33 of the bristles can be constructed so as to form a wedge-shape as shown in FIG. 3, an angled flat shape as shown in FIG. 6, and a rounded shape as shown in FIG. 5, when viewed from the first end of the device toward the second end of the device.

Claims

1. A reciprocating wire brush, the brush comprising:

a shank portion, the shank portion having a first end and a second end, and having a front side and a back side, the first end of the shank being adapted to be secured by a chuck of a reciprocating saw;

bristles, the bristles being attached to the front side of the second end of the shank, the bristles being constructed of metal wire.

2. A reciprocating wire brush as in claim 1 wherein the first end of the shank is adapted to be secured by a chuck of a jigsaw.

3. A reciprocating wire brush as in claim 1 wherein the first end of the shank is adapted to be secured by a chuck of a sawzall.

4. A reciprocating wire brush as in claim 1, 2, or 3 wherein the bristles further comprise a first end and a second end, the first end attached to the shank, and the second end adapted to engage an object to be brushed, the second end of the bristles forming a flat shape when viewed on a longitudinal axis.

A reciprocating wire brush as in claim 1, 2, or 3 wherein the bristles further comprise a first end and a second end, the first end attached to the shank, and the second end adapted to engage an object to be brushed, the second end of the bristles forming a wedge-shape when viewed on a longitudinal axis.

A reciprocating wire brush as in claim 1, 2, or 3 wherein the bristles further comprise a first end and a second end, the first end attached to the shank, and the second end adapted to engage an object to be brushed, the second end of the bristles forming a rounded shape when viewed on a longitudinal axis.

7. A reciprocating wire brush, the brush comprising:

a shank portion, the shank portion having a first end and a second end, and having a front side and a back side, the first end of the shank being adapted to be secured by a chuck of a reciprocating saw;

bristles, the bristles being attached to the back side of the second end of the shank, the bristles being constructed of metal wire.

8. A reciprocating wire brush as in claim 7 wherein the first end of the shank is adapted to be secured by a chuck of a jigsaw.

9. A reciprocating wire brush as in claim 7 wherein the first end of the shank is adapted to be secured by a chuck of a sawzall.

A reciprocating wire brush as in claim 7, 8, or 9 wherein the bristles further comprise a first end and a second end, the first end attached to the shank, and the second end adapted to engage an object to be brushed, the second end of the bristles forming a flat shape when viewed on a longitudinal axis.

11. A reciprocating wire brush as in claim 7, 8, or 9 wherein the bristles further comprise a first end and a second end, the first end attached to the shank, and the second end adapted to engage an object to be brushed, the second end of the bristles forming a wedge-shape when viewed on a longitudinal axis.

12. A reciprocating wire brush as in claim 7, 8, or 9 wherein the bristles further comprise a first end and a second end, the first end attached to the shank, and the second end adapted to engage an object to be brushed, the second end of the bristles forming a rounded shape when viewed on a longitudinal axis.
