Protective device for a person's palm
A protective device for a person's palm comprises a cushion which is positioned over the person's palm, a band which is attached to the cushion and is adapted to be positioned over at least one of the person's fingers, an elongated strap which comprises first and second strap ends and is adapted to be wrapped around the person's wrist, and a strip of material which comprises a first end that is attached to the cushion and a second end that is attached to the strap between the first and second strap ends.
This application is based on and claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 60/509,750, which was filed on Oct. 7, 2003.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONThe present invention relates to a device for protecting a person's palm from being injured by that person's fingernails. More particularly, the invention is directed to a cushion which is removably secured to the person's palm and which provides a padded barrier between the palm and the person's fingernails.
Many people afflicted with muscular, neurological and connective tissue disorders, as well as those suffering from head and spinal cord injuries, experience a side effect called metacarpophalangeal and interphalangeal contracture. This condition can lead to a loss of function of the fingers and thumb, which in turn can result in involuntary contractions of the hand. When this happens, the fingernails can cause painful injuries to the palm. Balls and stuffed animals have traditionally been used to prevent the fingernails from injuring the palm. However, since these items can slip from the hand when the patient falls asleep, they often provide only temporary relief.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTIONIn accordance with the present invention, a protective device for a person's palm is provided which comprises a cushion which is positioned over the person's palm, a band which is attached to the cushion and is adapted to be positioned over at least one of the person's fingers, an elongated strap which comprises first and second strap ends and is adapted to be wrapped around the person's wrist, and a strip of material which comprises a first end that is attached to the cushion and a second end that is attached to the strap between the first and second strap ends.
In one embodiment of the invention, the cushion comprises a flexible cover and a stuffing material which is contained within the cover. Also, each of the cover and the stuffing material is preferably comprised of a washable material. Furthermore, the strap is ideally comprised of Nylon®.
When the protective device is secured to the patient's hand, the cushion will provide a protective barrier between the patient's fingernails and her palm. As a result, the cushion will prevent the patient's fingernails from injuring her palm. Also, the protective device can be adapted to maintain the patient's fingers in a comfortable position by sizing the cushion appropriately. Furthermore, when the cover and the stuffing material are made of absorbent materials, the cushion will absorb the patient's sweat and thereby make the her more comfortable.
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will be made apparent from the following detailed description, with reference to the accompanying drawings. In the drawings, the same reference numbers are used to denote similar components in the various embodiments.
