Padded riding garment

Abstract

A padded riding garment that is worn on the outside of a motorcyclist clothing that provides a cohesive surface that is situated between a rider and a motorcycle seat. The padded riding garment is a triangular shaped suede leather with two upper corners having a smooth leather strap and buckle sewn to the top of the triangle crossing the waist of the wearer. The lower interior of the triangle sits under the buttocks of the wearer and is lined with sheepskin to provide padding. Two smooth leather straps are sewn to the bottom corner of the triangle and travel between the legs across the front of the wearer's legs, where the straps attach to buckles that are sewn.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

This invention relates generally to riding garments and specifically to padded riding garments for motorcyclists worn outside of clothing.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The motorcycle has been in production since the early part of the twentieth century. Many improvements have been made on the engine size and its ability to transport more than one individual yet, the seating comfort over any distance has been difficult to improve. One of the enjoyable aspects of riding a motorcycle is the ability to be out in the open air, feel the wind and experience of an engine purring under the rider. The evolution of the bike has made them much bigger vehicles with larger engines than the first bikes produced. When a cyclist rides upon the large, vibrating engine of a motorcycle there is a constant shifting of the body on the motorcycles' seat. This appreciably changes the rider's posture and may allow numbing or pain of the rider's posterior. Although he/she may start their ride sitting up straight with their buttocks upon the seat, the constant motion of the motorcycle and the difficulty to shift one's body or resituate oneself on the seat may soon cause the body's weight and pressure to rest on the upper part of the rear end (coccygeal area) instead of the gluteus maximus or buttocks. This is especially true when riding If the rider is unable to maintain good posture while riding on a motorcycle he or she may have a numb posterior and may have a stiff body making it difficult to dismount and recovery from the stiffness.

U.S. Pat. No. 5,727,260 issued Mar. 17, 1998 to Torch et al for ROLLER BLADE SKATING GARMENT pertains to the protection of the hip and coccyx area while on roller blades. It shows straps originating about half way from the bottom to the top of the backside of a garment and does not teach about the friction of the outer surface since its use is for skate boarding and roller blading and the user may not wear it for sitting down.

Protective garments for motorcyclists may shield other body parts. U.S. Pat. No. 5,295,267 issued Mar. 22, 1994 to Galindo for PROTECTIVE LOINCLOTH GARMENT FOR MOTORCYCLE RIDERS is one of the few items specifically for motorcycle riding. A small, triangular material attaching to belt loops appears to shield and insulate the groin and inner thighs from cold, wind, and wet weather while the wearer sits astride a motorcycle. It doe not appear to relate to riding comfort of the buttocks.

U.S. Pat. No. 4,837,859 issued Jun. 13, 1989 to Hamberg for SUPPLEMENTARY CLOTHING is a large square, insulated material with straps that start low down on the back. The intention of the patent is to insulate the user from a cold or wet surface during various outside activities such as riding on ski lifts, hunting or fishing.

U.S. Pat. No. 4,151,613 issued May 1, 1979 to Rhee for PROTECTIVE DEVICE FOR THE BUTTOCKS AND HIPS OF A PERSON FOR USE IN SKATEBOARDING teaches of a diaper shaped device to be used by an skateboarder.

It would be advantageous to have a device worn outside a motorcycle rider's clothing providing comfort and padding while also providing a decorative element.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

General Summary

The present invention teaches a padded riding garment that is worn on the outside of a motorcyclist clothing that provides a cohesive suede leather surface that is situated between a rider and a motorcycle seat. The padded riding garment is a triangular shaped suede leather with two upper corners having a smooth leather strap and buckle sewn to the top of the triangle crossing the waist of the wearer. The lower interior of the triangle sits under the buttocks of the wearer and is lined with sheepskin to provide padding. The suede leather exterior provides a cohesive high frictional element that may keep the rider firmly in contact with the motorcycle seat. Two smooth leather straps are sewn to the bottom corner of the triangle and travel between the legs across the front of the wearer's legs, where the straps attach to buckles that are sewn to the smooth leather strap surrounding the waist near the top two corners of the padded leather triangle.

It is one aspect, advantage, embodiment and objective of the present invention to provide a riding garment comprising a rear positioned triangular suede leather seat having a sheepskin lining, a buckled strap attached at the top of the triangle and extending beyond first and second corners of the triangle and crossing a rider's abdomen. A first and second leg straps attached at the triangle base corner crossing frontal areas of the rider's legs and attaching to the top first and second corners of the triangle.

It is second aspect, advantage, embodiment and objective of the present invention to provide a riding garment for a motorcycle rider comprising a rear positioned triangular shell seat having a lining a fastener attached at the top of the triangle and extending beyond first and second top corners of the triangle and crossing the rider's abdomen, first and second leg straps attached at the triangle base corner crossing frontal areas of rider's legs and attaching to the top first and second corners of the triangle.

It is another aspect, advantage, embodiment and objective of the present invention to provide the rear positioned triangular shell seat further comprising a fastener selected from the group consisting of buckles, buttons, hook and closure, hook and loop fabric, snaps, tension, toggles, studs and zippers.

It is another aspect, advantage, embodiment and objective of the present invention to provide the rear positioned triangular shell seat further comprising a shell material selected from the group consisting of cotton, patent or full grain leather, polyester, other polymer fabrics, other natural fibers, vinyl and wool.

It is another aspect, advantage, embodiment and objective of the present invention to provide the rear positioned triangular shell seat further comprising a lining material selected from the group consisting of cotton, open or closed cell foam, polyester, other polymers, rubber, vinyl and wool.

It is another aspect, advantage, embodiment and objective of the present invention to provide the rear positioned triangular shell seat wherein the rear positioned triangular shell and the lining are color coordinated.

It is another aspect, advantage, embodiment and objective of the present invention to provide the rear positioned triangular shell seat wherein the fastener is closed to the side of the rider's abdomen.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

In the presently preferred embodiment and best mode presently contemplated for carrying out the invention a triangular shaped padded suede leather 11 material with first 19 and second 20 corners of the upper part, situated on the clothed posterior of a motorcyclist. A smooth leather waist belt is attached there to the upper portion of the triangular shaped suede leather 12 material and extends on both sides of the first 19 and second 20 corners of the triangle 1 land may encircle around a riders waist and buckle 18 on the outside of their clothing. The triangular shaped suede leather 12 material providing sufficient cohesive friction between the garment and the motorcycle seat as to hold the wearer firmly as he/she operates the vehicle. This increase in friction aids the rider's ability to stay seated in the posture desired and thus increases their comfort. A lower corner of the triangle 21 is physically situated under a rider's buttocks providing comfort through a long journey via sheared sheep skin 22 placed on the inside, lower corner of the triangular shaped padded suede leather 11 garment. Two smooth leather leg straps 15 attached to a lower corner of the triangle 21, that a motorcyclist may sit upon, travels between the legs and towards frontal areas of the rider while attaching to first and second small buckles 16, 17 on the leather strap 14 connecting the top of the first 19 and second 20 corners of the triangle on the outside of their clothing. A leather fringe 13 is attached to or part of the lower sides of the triangular shaped suede leather 12 material as a decorative element.

In alternative embodiments, the buckle may be placed either to the left side or right side or the middle. Testing has revealed that a placement on the side is preferable as a center placement may cause injury or discomfort when the user is riding pillion behind another person: when going over a bump, a center placed buckle may impact the spine of the person to the front.

FIG. 1 shows the outside of the triangular padded riding garment 11 laid flat. A triangular shaped suede leather 12 material with an upper first 19 and second 20 corners of a leather triangle 11 at the top of the drawing and a lower corner of a leather triangle 21. The padded riding garment is worn on the outside of clothing. The smooth leather waist belt 14 is attached to the upper portion of the triangular shaped suede leather 12 material that extends on both sides of the first 19 and second 20 corners of the leather triangle 11. A side buckle for a waist belt 18 is sewn on at least one end. Two smooth leather leg straps 15 may be attached and sewn at the lower corner of the leather triangle 21. The smooth leather leg straps 15 pass between the wearer's legs. One strap 15 attaches to the first small buckle 16 hanging from the smooth leather waist belt 14 on beyond the first corner of the leather triangle 19. A remaining smooth leather leg strap 15 attaches to the second small buckle 17 hanging from the smooth leather waist belt 14 beyond the second corner of the leather triangle 20.

Alternative embodiments to the buckles may be buttons, hook and closures, hook and loop fabric (such as VELCRO@) snaps or tension buckles.

The leather fringe 13 is sewn onto the garment. The fringe provides visual movement as a decorative element and may be seen on either side of the rider's clothed buttocks. The fringed areas of the padded riding garment 11 may be complimentary to riders wearing fringed chaps.

Alternative embodiments to the fringe 13 on the suede leather 12 of the triangular padded riding garment 11 may include beading, embossing, painting, stitching or combinations while providing a decorative element of the functional padded riding garment 11.

Alternative embodiments to the leather shell of the triangular riding garment 11 may be selected from a group consisting of cotton, open or closed cell foam, polyester, other polymers, rubber, vinyl and wool.

FIG. 2 is an inside view of the padded riding garment laid flat. A cushioned material consisting of sheared sheep skin 22 can be seen extending from the left to right side of the inside and lower portion of the leather triangle 20.

FIG. 3a shows the view of the invention as it may be worn by a motorcyclist wearer 30. Smooth leather leg straps 15 attached to the lower corner of the leather triangle 21 are shown engaged to buckles 35 that are sewn and suspend from the smooth leather waist belt 14 at the front of the wearer 30.

FIG. 3b indicates an approximate position of the triangular padded riding garment 11 on the buttocks of the wearer 30. Placement of the sheared sheep skin 22, that is sewn to the inside of the triangular padded riding garment 11, is under the buttocks of the rider may provide sufficient comfort during ride to help prevent fatigue. The suede leather 12 of the triangular padded riding garment 11 may provide a cohesive surface against the motorcycle seat to help the rider stay in contact with the motorcycle seat and help keep their weight off of sensitive areas of the upper buttocks.

Alternative embodiments a lining and padding material of the triangular riding garment 11 may be selected from a group consisting of cotton, open or closed cell foam, polyester, other polymers, rubber, vinyl and wool, and color coordination has been found to be an important issue with the materials: color coordinated materials present a more pleasing appearance.

Many riders wear chaps as a protective as well as a decorative measure for protection. This garment is worn on the outside of clothing, are made from leather and may strap around the rider's waist and cover only the front of the upper and lower leg leaving the buttocks area uncovered. The leather material of chaps protects the rider's legs from any small objects that may become airborne from other vehicles in front of the motorcyclist as well as protection against extreme abrasion from a fall from the bike. The padded riding garment 11 is complementary protective clothing as material and padding on the buttocks area may decrease the effects from falling from a bike. Leather material is the preferred embodiment for the invention as the material provides abrasion protection. Since the padded riding garment 11 is independent from chaps the rider may benefit from greater flexibility between their legs and hip area.

The disclosure is provided to allow practice of the invention by those skilled in the art without undue experimentation, including the best mode presently contemplated and the presently preferred embodiment. Nothing in this disclosure is to be taken to limit the scope of the invention, which is susceptible to numerous alterations, equivalents and substitutions without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention. The scope of the invention is to be understood from the claims accompanying the corresponding utility application to be filed at a later date.

Claims

1. A riding garment for a motorcycle rider comprising:

a rear positioned triangular suede leather seat having a sheepskin lining;

a buckled strap attached at the top of the triangle and extending beyond first and second top corners of the triangle and crossing the rider's abdomen;

first and second leg straps attached at the triangle base corner crossing frontal areas of the rider's legs and attaching to the top first and second corners of the triangle.

8. A riding garment for a motorcycle rider comprising:

a rear positioned triangular shell seat having a lining;

a fastener attached at the top of the triangle and extending beyond first and second top corners of the triangle and crossing the rider's abdomen;

first and second leg straps attached at the triangle base corner crossing frontal areas of rider's legs and attaching to the top first and second corners of the triangle.

12. The riding garment of claim 8 wherein the rear positioned triangular shell and the lining are color coordinated.

13. The riding garment of claim 8 wherein the fastener is closed to the side of the rider's abdomen.
