User-configurable bathtub toy assembly
A bathtub toy assembly including a play support platform assembly, a first flap pivotally connected to one end of the platform assembly and a second flap pivotally connected to an opposite end. With the flaps in horizontal positions, the bathtub toy assembly can be positioned across a bathtub, supported on opposite tub sides and with the platform assembly suspended over the tub in a child play position. The flaps can be re-positioned in vertical positions forming legs for supporting the toy assembly on a horizontal surface with the platform assembly raised. A child can then set on the horizontal surface with his legs underneath the platform assembly and play with toys on the platform assembly. Movable mechanistic play toys can be attached to the platform assembly and horizontal and vertical paths can be formed relative to the play toys and along which a child can move toy vehicles. The toy vehicles can each have a floatation device in its chassis allowing it to float upright and level in water.

The present invention provides a toy assembly adapted for bathtub and alternatively non-bathtub use. The assembly includes a play support platform with two end flaps hingedly connected to the platform at opposite ends thereof and adapted to fold between at least two positions. In the first position, the end flaps are horizontal relative to the platform and may be supported on the edges of a bathtub (or arms of an armchair). In the second position, the end flaps are vertical relative to the platform and may rest on any horizontal surface, including the floor of a bathtub or, alternatively, on the floor of a room. The assembly may support mechanistic play items which are attachable on the surface of the platform.
The assembly can include a locking mechanism to securely hold the end flaps in their respective positions. This is accomplished by a hinge mechanism attaching an end flap to the platform and having a mechanism which may be pulled outwardly to lock the end flap in the desired position. As a result, the end flaps are secured into place by the locking mechanism in either position and may be subjected to pressure or jostling without danger of buckling. Since an embodiment of the present invention is geared toward children, the locking mechanism feature is a desirable feature, as children are likely to subject any toy play item to rough treatment and therefore danger of buckling.
Another aspect of the present invention is to provide means to secure the two foldable end flaps in either functional position. This is accomplished by providing attaching means, such as suction cups, to the free portion of the end flap. When the end flaps are in the horizontal position, the attaching means may serve to attach to the wall adjacent to the bathtub edge, thereby further stabilizing the assembly. When the end flaps are in the vertical position, the attaching means may serve to attach to the horizontal surface on which the assembly lies, thereby further stabilizing the assembly. This is especially helpful when the assembly is positioned in a water-filled bathtub.
In other words, a multi-use play assembly is disclosed including a play support platform assembly having opposing first and second ends and adapted to support one or more movable play items. An end first flap pivotally is connected to the first end and adapted to be positionable in a wing position extending horizontally out from the play support platform assembly, and in an alternative pivoted leg position extending vertically down from the play support platform assembly and blocked from folding into a horizontal position underneath the play support platform assembly. An end second flap is similarly pivotally connected to the second end and adapted to be positionable in a wing position extending horizontally out from the play support platform assembly, and in an alternative pivoted leg position extending vertically down from the play support platform assembly and blocked from folding into a horizontal position underneath the play support platform assembly. With the first and second flaps in the respective wing positions, the multi-use play assembly can be positioned on a bathtub with the first and second flaps resting on opposing side edges of the bathtub and the play support platform assembly disposed in a horizontal play position over the bathtub and between the side edges of the bathtub. With the first and second flaps in the respective leg positions, the multi-use play assembly can be positioned on a horizontal support surface with the flaps holding the play support platform assembly in a raised horizontal play position spaced above the horizontal support surface.

The many features of the present invention, as described previously, serve to present a child with an entertaining interactive toy which stimulates his or her imagination. Such descriptions and illustrations should be considered illustrative of the present invention and not limiting in any way. As an example, the present invention encompasses a game board theme situated on the play support platform 204 in which two children play on either side. Alternatively, the present invention encompasses a teaching tool in which, for example, the play support platform 204 is imprinted with the letters of the alphabet and a child matches a play item that starts with the imprinted letter to the imprinted letter, such as a toy banana next to the imprinted letter “B.”
From the foregoing detailed description, it will be evident that there are a number of changes, adaptations and modifications of the present invention which come within the province of those skilled in the art. The scope of the invention includes any combination of the elements from the different species or embodiments disclosed herein, as well as subassemblies, assemblies, and methods thereof. However, it is intended that all such variations not departing from the spirit of the invention be considered as within the scope thereof.
Claims
1. A toy assembly adapted for bathtub and non-bathtub use, comprising:
- a substantially rectangular play support platform having two short edges parallel to one another and two long edges parallel to one another and perpendicular to the two short edges, the play support platform adapted to house play items in a chamber below the play support platform and adapted to support play items on the surface;
- a first end flap hingedly connected to a first short edge of the two short edges of the play support platform, the first end flap adapted to move from a first outwardly horizontal position to the play support platform to a second downwardly vertical position to the play support platform;
- a second end flap hingedly connected to a second short edge of the two short edges of the play support platform, the second end flap adapted to move from a outwardly horizontal first position to the play support platform to a second downwardly vertical position to the play support platform;
- a first hinge attaching the first end flap to the first short edge of the play support platform at the point where they meet, the first hinge adapted to lock the first end flap in the first outwardly horizontal position or in the second downwardly vertical position to the play support platform;
- a second hinge attaching the second end flap to the second short edge of the play support platform at the point where they meet, the second hinge adapted to lock the second end flap in the first outwardly horizontal position or in the second downwardly vertical position to the play support platform;
- a carrying handle adapted to move from a first horizontal position to a second vertical position relative to the play support platform, the carrying handle adapted to become part of the play support platform when in the first horizontal position;
- at least one suction cup attached to the portion of the first end flap opposite to the portion of the first end flap attached to the play support platform; and
- at least one suction cup attached to the portion of the second end flap opposite to the portion of the second end flap attached to the play support platform.
2. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the end flap in the first outwardly horizontal position is adapted to rest on the edges of a bathtub.
3. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the end flap in the second vertical position is adapted to rest on a horizontal surface.
4. The assembly of claim 1, wherein at least one mechanistic play item is attached to at least one location on or within the play support platform.
5. The assembly of claim 4, wherein the at least one mechanistic play item is an elevator, a water-tower connected to a pump, a firehouse or a crane.
6. The assembly of claim 4, wherein the at least one mechanistic play item is at least one of an oven toy, an ice cream cone holder toy, or a serving tray.
7. The assembly of claim 5, wherein a crank raises and lowers the elevator.
8. The assembly of claim 5, wherein the pump connected to the water-tower releases water when depressed.
9. The assembly of claim 5, wherein the firehouse supports a helopad which serves as a button opening the door to the firehouse when compressed.
10. The assembly of claim 5, wherein a crank raises and lowers the crane.
11. The assembly of claim 4, further comprising at least one play piece positionable by a user on the play support platform and relative to the at least one mechanistic play item.
12. The assembly of claim 11, wherein the at least one play piece is a helicopter, dump truck or car.
13. The assembly of claim 11, wherein the at least one play piece is alternatively a play doughnut, a play cup cake, a play ice cream cone, a play milkshake, a play cake, or a play decorative frosting tube squirter.
14. The assembly of claim 1, wherein at least one trap door is positioned on the play support surface and is adapted to open towards the chamber below the play support surface.
15. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the end flaps have openings to form a helopad configuration.
16. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the end flaps have a facade with a thickness that becomes gradually thinner from the portion of the end flap attached to the play support platform to a free end of the end flap.
17. The assembly of claim 14, wherein the thickest portion of the facade of the end flap angles away from the play support platform.
18. The assembly of claim 1 wherein the play support platform assembly includes at least one side panel which opens outwardly or slides open to allow access to the chamber below the play support surface.
19. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the first hinge has a lever adapted to pull out and release the first end flap from the outwardly horizontal position to the downwardly vertical position.
20. The assembly of claim 1, wherein the second hinge has a lever adapted to pull out and release the second end flap from the outwardly horizontal position to the downwardly vertical position.
21. A multi-use play assembly, comprising:
- a play support platform assembly having opposing first and second ends and adapted to support one or more movable play items;
- an end first flap hingedly connected to the first end and adapted to be positionable in a wing position extending horizontally out from the play support platform assembly, and in an alternative pivoted leg position extending vertically down from the play support platform assembly and blocked from folding into a horizontal position underneath the play support platform assembly;
- an end second flap hingedly connected to the second end and adapted to be positionable in a wing position extending horizontally out from the play support platform assembly, and in an alternative pivoted leg position extending vertically down from the play support platform assembly and blocked from folding into a horizontal position underneath the play support platform assembly;
- with the first and second flaps in the respective wing positions, the multi-use play assembly being adapted to be positioned on a bathtub with the first and second flaps resting on opposing side edges of the bathtub and the play support platform assembly disposed in a horizontal play position over the bathtub and between the side edges of the bathtub; and
- with the first and second flaps in the respective leg positions, the multi-use play assembly being adapted to be positioned on a horizontal support surface with the flaps holding the play support platform assembly in a raised horizontal play position spaced above the horizontal support surface.
22. The assembly of claim 21, wherein the play support platform assembly includes multi-story play support surfaces with at least one play path between the support surfaces.
23. The assembly of claim 21, wherein the play support platform assembly includes a side play surface ramp.
24. The assembly of claim 21, wherein the first flap includes through-openings to define a helopad configuration.
25. The assembly of claim 21, further comprising at least one mechanistic play item attached to at least one location on or within the play support platform assembly.
26. The assembly of claim 25, wherein the at least one mechanistic play item is an elevator, a water-tower connected to a pump, a firehouse or a crane.
27. The assembly of claim 25, wherein the at least one mechanistic play item is at least one of an oven toy, an ice cream cone holder toy or a dishwasher toy.
28. The assembly of claim 25, wherein the play support platform assembly includes an elevator and a crank, the crank adapted to raise and lower the elevator.
29. The assembly of claim 25, wherein the play support platform assembly includes a pump connected to a water-tower and which sprays water when depressed.
30. The assembly of claim 25, wherein the play support platform assembly includes a toy firehouse which supports a helopad which forms a button opening the door to a firehouse when compressed.
31. The assembly of claim 25, further comprising at least one play piece positionable by a user on the play support platform assembly and relative to the at least one mechanistic play item.
32. The assembly of claim 31, wherein the at least one play piece is a toy helicopter, dump truck or car.
33. The assembly of claim 31, wherein the at least one play piece is a toy doughnut, a toy cup cake, a toy ice cream cone, a toy milkshake, a toy cake, or a toy decorative frosting tube squirter.
34. The assembly of claim 31, wherein the play piece has an internal floatable device.
35. The assembly of claim 21, wherein at least one trap door is positioned on a play support surface of the play support platform assembly and is adapted to open towards the chamber below the play support surface.
36. The assembly of claim 21, wherein the end flaps have a facade with a thickness that becomes gradually thinner from the portion of the end flap attached to the play support platform to a free end of the end flap.
37. The assembly of claim 36, wherein the thickest portion of the facade of the end flap angles away from the play support platform.
38. The assembly of claim 21, wherein the play support platform assembly includes at least one side panel which opens outwardly or slides open to allow access to the chamber below the play support platform surface.
39. The assembly of claim 21, wherein the play support platform assembly has a storage chamber below the surface of the play support platform.
40. The assembly of claim 21, wherein the play support platform assembly includes a carrying handle adapted to move from a horizontal position to a vertical position relative to a play support platform, the carrying handle adapted to become part of the play support platform when in the horizontal position.
41. A multi-use play assembly, comprising:
- a play support platform assembly having opposing first and second ends and adapted to support one or more movable play items;
- an end first flap;
- an end second flap;
- first hinge means for hingedly connecting the end first flap to the first end such that the first flap is positionable in a wing position extending horizontally out from the play support platform assembly, and in an alternative pivoted leg position extending vertically down from the play support platform assembly and blocked from folding into a horizontal position underneath the play support platform assembly;
- second hinge means for hingedly connecting the end second flap to the second end such that the second flap is positionable in a wing position extending horizontally out from the play support platform assembly, and in an alternative pivoted leg position extending vertically down from the play support platform assembly and blocked from folding into a horizontal position underneath the play support platform assembly;
- with the first and second flaps in the respective wing positions, the multi-use play assembly being adapted to be extended between two surfaces with the first and second flaps resting on one of the respective two surfaces and the play support platform assembly disposed in a horizontal play position spaced above a lower surface which is lower than the two surfaces; and
- with the first and second flaps in the respective leg positions, the multi-use play assembly being adapted to be positioned on a horizontal support surface with the flaps holding the play support platform assembly in a raised horizontal play position spaced above the horizontal support surface.
42. The assembly of claim 41, wherein the play support platform assembly includes multi-story play support surfaces with at least one play path between the support surfaces.
43. The assembly of claim 41, wherein the play support platform assembly includes a side play surface ramp.
44. The assembly of claim 41, wherein the first flap includes through-openings which define a helopad configuration.
45. The assembly of claim 41, further comprising at least one mechanistic play item attached to at least one location on or within the play support platform assembly.
46. The assembly of claim 45, wherein the at least one mechanistic play item is an elevator, a water-tower connected to a pump, a firehouse or a crane.
47. The assembly of claim 45, wherein the at least one mechanistic play item is at least one of an oven toy, an ice cream cone holder toy or a dishwasher.
48. The assembly of claim 45, wherein the play support platform assembly includes an elevator and a crank, the crank adapted to raise and lower the elevator.
49. The assembly of claim 45, wherein the play support platform assembly includes a water spraying pump connected to a water tower.
50. The assembly of claim 45, wherein the play support platform assembly includes a toy firehouse which supports a helipad, the helipad forming a button opening a door of a firehouse when compressed.
51. The assembly of claim 41, further comprising at least one play piece positionable by a user on the play support platform assembly and relative to the at least one mechanistic play item.
52. The assembly of claim 51, wherein the at least one play piece is a toy helicopter, dump truck or car.
53. The assembly of claim 51, wherein the at least one play piece is alternatively a toy doughnut, a toy cup cake, a toy ice cream cone, a toy milkshake, a toy cake, or a toy decorative frosting tube squirter.
54. The assembly of claim 51, wherein the play piece has a floatable device disposed within.
55. The assembly of claim 41, wherein at least one trap door is positioned on the play support surface and is adapted to open towards the chamber below the play support surface.
56. The assembly of claim 41, wherein the end flaps have a facade with a thickness that becomes gradually thinner from the portion of the end flap attached to the play support platform to a free end of the end flap.
57. The assembly of claim 56, wherein the thickest portion of the facade of the end flap angles away from the play support platform.
58. The assembly of claim 41, wherein the play support platform assembly includes at least one side panel which opens outwardly or slides open to allow access to the chamber below the play support surface.
59. The assembly of claim 41, wherein the play support platform assembles is adapted to house play items in a chamber below a play support platform.
60. The assembly of claim 41, further comprising a carrying handle adapted to move from a horizontal position to a vertical position relative to the play support platform, the carrying handle adapted to become part of the play support platform when in the horizontal position.
61. The assembly of claim 41, wherein the two surfaces are side edges of a bathtub.
62. The assembly of claim 41, wherein the first hinge means has a lever adapted to pull out and lock the end first flap in either the extended wing position or the alternative pivoted leg position.
63. The assembly of claim 62, wherein the second hinge means has a lever adapted to pull out and lock the end second flap in either the extended wing position or the alternative pivoted leg position.
64. The assembly of claim 41, further comprising at least one suction cup attached to the free end of the end first flap.
65. The assembly of claim 64, further comprising at least one suction cup attached to the free end of the end second flap.
66. A play method comprising:
- providing a multi-use play assembly including: (a) a play support platform assembly having opposing first and second ends; (b) an end first flap pivotally connected to the first end and adapted to be positionable in a wing position extending horizontally out from the play support platform assembly and in an alternative leg position extending vertically down from the play support platform assembly; and (c) an end second flap pivotally connected to the second end and adapted to be positionable in a wing position extending horizontally out from the play support platform assembly and in an alternative leg position extending vertically down from the play support platform assembly;
- with the first and second flaps in the respective wing positions, positioning the multi-use play assembly on a bathtub with the first and second flaps resting on opposing side edges of the bathtub and the play support platform assembly disposed in a horizontal play position over the bathtub and between the side edges of the bathtub;
- moving the first and second flaps from the respective wing positions to the respective leg positions; and
- with the first and second flaps in the respective leg positions, positioning the multi-use play assembly on a support surface with the flaps holding the play support platform assembly in a raised horizontal play position spaced above the support surface.
67. The play method of claim 66, wherein the support surface is a bottom surface of the bathtub.
68. The play method of claim 66, wherein the support surface is the ground or a housing floor.
69. The play method of claim 66, wherein each of the wing positions and the leg positions is a locked position.
70. The play method of claim 66, wherein the play support platform assembly includes a lower level and an upper level, and further comprising moving a play toy between the upper and lower levels.
71. The play method of claim 70, wherein the moving is on an elevator between the levels.
72. The play method of claim 70, wherein the moving is on a ramp between the levels.
73. The play method of claim 66, wherein the platform assembly includes a water pump and a ramp, and further comprising pumping water from the water pump onto the ramp.
74. The play method of claim 66, wherein the end first flap and the end second flap includes a suction cup, and the positioning on the bathtub includes attaching the suction cup to a bathroom wall adjacent the bathtub.
75. The play method of claim 66, wherein the end first flap and the end second flap includes through-openings to resemble a helopad, and further comprising manipulating a toy helicopter onto and off of the helopad.
76. The play method of claim 66, wherein the play support platform includes a toy oven, dishwasher and ice cream cone holder, and further comprising manipulating a toy doughnut, ice cream cone, cupcake or decorative frosting tube squirter thereabout.
77. The play method of claim 66, wherein the play support platform assembly includes at least one side panel movable by the user, the side panel opening outwardly or sliding open to allow access to the chamber below the play support surface.
78. A floatable play assembly, comprising:
- a toy vehicle comprising a body and a chassis; and
- a floatable device disposed within the toy vehicle.
79. The assembly of claim 78, wherein the toy vehicle is made of non-metal materials.
80. The assembly of claim 78, wherein the non-metal material is rust resistant.
81. The assembly of claim 78, wherein the floatable device is disposed between the body of the vehicle and the chassis.
82. The assembly of claim 78, wherein the floatable device is foam.
83. The assembly of claim 78, wherein the floatable device is a blow molded plastic piece.
84. The assembly of claim 78, wherein the floatable device is a sealed chamber in which air is entrapped.
85. The assembly of claim 78, wherein the toy vehicle is adapted to roll on a solid surface and to float in water.
86. The assembly of claim 78, wherein the toy vehicle has at least one wheel.
87. The assembly of claim 78, wherein the toy vehicle has length, width and height of approximately three inches, two inches and one and one-half inches, respectively.
88. The assembly of claim 78, wherein the floatable device has dimensions of approximately one-half inch by three-fourths inch, respectively.
