Headband with reversible cover

Abstract

A hair decoration device, such as a headband, with a reversible, removable cover. The device includes a C-shaped headband and an elongated cover made of two different patterns of ribbon, the cover having a centrally located pocket that allows the cover to be slid onto the headband. The cover can be removed and reversed, as desired. Furthermore, the cover may present precious or semi-precious gemstones or other coloration and decoration.

CROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

This application is based upon and claims benefit of copending and co-owned U.S. Provisional Patent Application Ser. No. 60/599,998 entitled “Headband with Reversible Cover,” filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Aug. 9, 2004 by the inventor herein, the specification of which is included herein by reference.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

1. Field of the Invention

This invention generally relates to a device for adding decoration to a wearer's hair and, more particularly, but not by way of limitation, to a reversible, decorative device for adorning such hair in order to add a splash of color and bring attention to the area of the decorated part of the wearer.

2. Background of the Prior Art

Historically, people have enjoyed placing ornamentation on their body, particularly in their hair. Most of the known ornaments have encompassed embodiments such as hats, headbands, scarves, and barrettes, which hold and reposition the hair on a wearer's head. With a variety of colors and devices, a person may draw attention to themselves, and particularly to the person's head and face.

There remains a need, however, for a simple device that can achieve the effect of adding color or decoration in order to draw attention to the wearer, but that is not limited to a single decorative pattern.

Moreover, there remains a need for a simple hair decoration device that can be easily changed according to the desires of the wearer.

Accordingly, there remains a need for a hair decoration device that allows the wearer to decorate their hair with color, while also allowing the user to change the decoration color and pattern of the device, as well.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide a simple headband with a cover that avoids the disadvantages of the prior art.

It is another object of the present invention to provide a headband cover that has two decorative surfaces. A related object is to provide a headband cover that is reversible. A further related object is to provide a headband cover that is removable.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a headband with a cover that adds a splash of color to a wearer's appearance. A related object of the present invention is to provide a headband with a cover that can be customized according to the wearer's desires.

In accordance with the above objects, a headband and a reversible, removable cover is disclosed for adding decoration to a wearer's hair. The cover can be removed or changed, as desired, to add ornamentation into the wearer's hair. The cover may be further adorned with decorations and may display precious or semi-precious gemstones.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

The invention summarized above and defined by the enumerated claims may be better understood by referring to the following description, which should be read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings in which like reference numbers are used for like parts. This description of an embodiment, set out below to enable one to practice an implementation of the invention, is not intended to limit the preferred embodiment, but to serve as a particular example thereof. Those skilled in the art should appreciate that they may readily use the conception and specific embodiments disclosed as a basis for modifying or designing other methods and systems for carrying out the same purposes of the present invention. Those skilled in the art should also realize that such equivalent assemblies do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention in its broadest form.

FIG. 1 shows a headband, indicated generally as 10. Headband 10 comprises a substantially C-shaped flat band, generally made of nylon, plastic or light metal. In a preferred embodiment, the dimension of the overall length of headband 10 is significantly longer than the dimension of the width of said headband 10. For example, in some embodiments, headband 10 may be approximately 14-inches in length and only ½-inch in width. The ends 12, 13 of headband 10 may be rounded or flat with rounded edges.

Referring to FIG. 2, a cover 20 comprises a two-ply cover made of at least two strips of ribbon-like material 22, 23 (not shown), sized and configured to enable the strips to be stitched together having a pocket 25 between such stitched seams, such pocket 35 being wider than the width of headband 10 and approximately the length of headband 10. In a preferred embodiment, each strip 22 and strip 23 present a decorative pattern; the pattern on strip 22 being different from the pattern on strip 23. To form such cover 20, strip 22 is aligned with strip 23 and a seam 26 is run along the edges of long sides 28, 29 of both strips 22, 23, to connect the strips 22, 23. A seam is also run along one end 30, leaving the opposite end 33 unstitched. Such construction leaves a pocket 25 having strip 22 on one side and strip 23 on the other side.

In use, cover 20 may be slid onto headband 10 by inserting an end of the headband, such as 12, into pocket 25 between strips 22, 23 at the unstitched end 33 and sliding the cover 20 over headband 10 until the end 12 engages the stitched end 30. Cover 20 is removable and reversible, such that the decorative pattern of either strip 22 or strip 23 may be exposed when worn. A small portion of headband 10, at end 13, may extend out of the cover 20. In some embodiments, a flap may be included to cover the unstitched end 33. Such flap may be held in place by an appropriate fastener, such as a hook and loop fastener, a snap, or the like.

In an alternate embodiment of the instant invention, strip 22 or 23 may also present an additional fastening means to enable additional decorative elements to be attached to the cover 20. Such decorative embossment may include precious, semi-precious, or non-precious gemstones, flowers, words, or the like.

While specific values, relationships, materials and steps have been set forth for purposes of describing concepts of the invention, it will be appreciated by persons skilled in the art that numerous variations and/or modifications may be made to the invention as shown in the specific embodiments without departing from the spirit or scope of the basic concepts and operating principles of the invention as broadly described. It should be recognized that, in the light of the above teachings, those skilled in the art can modify those specifics without departing from the invention taught herein. Having now fully set forth the preferred embodiments and certain modifications of the concept underlying the present invention, various other embodiments as well as certain variations and modifications of the embodiments herein shown and described will obviously occur to those skilled in the art upon becoming familiar with such underlying concept. It is intended to include all such modifications, alternatives and other embodiments insofar as they come within the scope of the appended claims or equivalents thereof. It should be understood, therefore, that the invention may be practiced otherwise than as specifically set forth herein. Consequently, the present embodiments are to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive.

Claims

1. A cover for a headband, comprising:

a first elongated ribbon of material having a length dimension approximately equal to the length of said headband and having a width dimension wider than the width of said headband; and

a second elongated ribbon of material approximately equal in length and width to said first elongated ribbon of material, wherein said second elongated ribbon of material is attached to said first elongated ribbon of material along both the edges of the length dimension and along only one of the edges of the width dimension forming an elongated pocket sized and configured to enable said a headband to be removably placed therein.

2. The cover for a headband according to claim 1, wherein said first and second elongated ribbons of material have a surface displaying a decoration.

3. The cover for a headband according to claim 2, wherein the decorative surface of said first elongated ribbon of material is different from the decorative surface of said second elongated ribbon of material.

4. The cover for a headband according to claim 2, wherein said decoration further comprises a decorative element.

5. The cover for a headband according to claim 4, wherein said decorative element is selected from the group consisting of:

flowers;

precious gemstones;

semi-precious gemstones;

non-precious stones;

crystals;

beads;

glass; and

combinations of the above.

6. The cover for a headband according to claim 1, further comprising a flap, sized and configured to cover the open end of the pocket formed by said first and second elongated ribbons of material.

7. A method of making a headband cover, comprising the steps of:

providing a first elongated ribbon of material having a length dimension approximately equal to the length of a headband and having a width dimension wider than the width of said headband;

providing a second elongated ribbon of material approximately equal in length and width to said first elongated ribbon of material;

aligning said first elongated ribbon of material with said second elongated ribbon of material such that the outside edges of both sides of the length dimension of said first elongated ribbon are arranged in a line with the outside edges of both sides of the length dimension of said second elongated ribbon; and

forming an elongated pocket comprising said first and second elongated ribbons of material, sized and configured to enable a headband to be removably placed therein.

8. The method of making a headband cover according to claim 7, said step of forming a pocket further comprising:

attaching said second elongated ribbon of material to said first elongated ribbon of material along both the edges of the length dimension of said first and second ribbons of material and along only one of the edges of the width dimension.

9. The method of making a headband cover according to claim 7, wherein said first and second elongated ribbons of material have a surface displaying a decoration.

10. The method of making a headband cover according to claim 9, wherein the decorative surface of said first elongated ribbon of material is different from the decorative surface of said second elongated ribbon of material.

11. The method of making a headband cover according to claim 7, further comprising the steps of adding a decorative element to said pocket.

12. The method of making a headband cover according to claim 11, wherein said decorative element is selected from the group consisting of:

flowers;

precious gemstones;

semi-precious gemstones;

non-precious stones;

crystals;

beads;

glass; and

combinations of the above.

13. The method of making a headband cover according to claim 7, further comprising the steps of creating a flap, sized and configured to cover the open end of the pocket formed by said first and second elongated ribbons of material.

14. A combination headband and cover for a headband, comprising:

a substantially C-shaped flat band having a length dimension significantly longer than the width dimension of said band;

a first elongated ribbon of material having a length dimension approximately equal to the length of said band and having a width dimension wider than the width of said band; and

a second elongated ribbon of material approximately equal in length and width to said first elongated ribbon of material, wherein said second elongated ribbon of material is attached to said first elongated ribbon of material along both the edges of the length dimension and along only one of the edges of the width dimension forming an elongated pocket sized and configured to enable said band to be removably placed therein.

15. The combination according to claim 14, wherein said first and second elongated ribbons of material have a surface displaying a decoration.

16. The combination according to claim 15, wherein the decorative surface of said first elongated ribbon of material is different from the decorative surface of said second elongated ribbon of material.

17. The combination according to claim 15, wherein said decoration further comprises a decorative element.

18. The combination according to claim 17, wherein said decorative element is selected from the group consisting of:

flowers;

precious gemstones;

semi-precious gemstones;

non-precious stones;

crystals;

beads;

glass; and

combinations of the above.

19. The combination according to claim 14, further comprising a flap, sized and configured to cover the open end of the pocket formed by said first and second elongated ribbons of material.

20. The cover for a headband according to claim 1, wherein said cover is reversible.
