Description
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

1. Field of the Invention

The present invention relates to apparatus for supporting athletic exercise equipment or other heavy items. More particularly, the present invention relates to apparatus for supporting a plurality of spaced heavy boxing bags or water bags.

2. Description of the Related Art

The use of various types of stands for suspending heavy boxing bags for training by a boxer is known. These stands are typically limited to supporting a single boxing bag from a single cantilevered beam. Such designs are inherently subject to bending and failure during extended use. The unbalanced design also requires a large base support. It would be desirable to provide a robust stand capable of suspending a plurality of heavy boxing bags for use by training boxers. It would also be desirable to provide a balanced support stand requiring a minimum of base support.

None of the above-discussed support stands, taken either singly or in combination, is seen to describe the instant invention as claimed. Thus, a multiple heavy bag stand solving the aforementioned problems is desired.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The multiple heavy bag stand of the present invention is useful for the spaced suspension of heavy boxing bags for use in training boxers. The stand has a centrally disposed, vertically extending stanchion of steel pipe upon which is removably attached a horizontally extending support rack. The rack is constructed of steel tubing of square cross section and forms a polygonal perimeter having a support for an individual bag at each corner of the polygon. Radial supports extend outward from a centrally located vertical support attached at the upper end of the vertical stanchion, the radial supports supporting the polygonal perimeter. A pair of upper horizontal and upper angled lower radial supports is spaced along and extends from the centrally located vertical support to join at each individual bag support. The design is robust to carry the weight of the heavy bags. Boxing bags may be of the same size or of varying sizes as desired. The inventive stand may also be used as a support for a plurality of water bags for a military installation. Support racks having three, four, five, six, eight, of other desired number of bag attachment stations are provided and may be easily replaced or substituted by removing one size from the stanchion and attaching another in its place.

These and other features of the present invention will become readily apparent upon further review of the following specification and drawings.

Preferably, stanchion elongate body 18 is cylindrical in form having a round lower flange having securing bolts 26 set in concrete or otherwise attached to the floor. Stanchion 12 supports a bag support frame 20 having a vertically disposed inner elongate body 22. Elongate body 22 preferably is cylindrical in form having an attachment flange 24 at its lower end having bolt receiving bores 25 and being of the same size and bore configuration of stanchion upper mounting flange 16 for attachment therebetween by securing bolts 26 and nuts (not shown). Stanchion 12 and elongate body 22 forms a central post having an upper portion for mounting the bag support frame 20 when connected. Bag support frame 20 is polygonal in shape having a bag support at each corner.

Referring to FIGS. 1-5, there is shown an embodiment of the invention having a triangular bag support frame 20 centrally mounted on stanchion 12 and having support corners for three heavy punching and kicking bags B. Bag support frame 20 of this embodiment has railed perimeter member 28 having bag support brackets 30 at each of the three corners thereof and three perimeter rails 32 of equal length forming the generally triangular perimeter 32. Perimeter rails 32 are preferably tubular in configuration having a square cross section and having upper walls 34, inner and outer sidewalls 36 and lower walls 38. The bag support brackets 30 are preferably tubular in configuration having a square cross section of the same dimensions as perimeter rails 32.

Bag support brackets 30 have upper walls 40, inner and outer sidewalls 42, and lower walls 44 and each upper wall 40 and lower wall has aligned bag support receiving bores 48 for insertion of a bag support such as the threaded shank of a bag support hook 50 secured by hook nuts 52. Bag B as shown is suspended from support chains attached to the hook portion of hook 50. Upper radial perimeter support members 60 extend laterally between inner frame support body 22 and each bag support bracket 30, respectively, each radial perimeter support member having an inner end portion 62 attached to the inner frame support body 22 and an outer end portion 64 attached at the inner sidewall 42 of bag support bracket 30 as by welding.

Upper radial perimeter support members 60 preferably attach at the upper end 66 of inner frame support body 22. Lower radial support members 70 have inner lower end portions 72 and outer upper end portion 74 cut at an angle. Lower radial support members 70 extend at an upward angle from inner frame support body 22, proximate frame support body attachment flange 24, to the lower wall of respective outer end portions 64 of upper radial perimeter support members 60. Inner lower end portions 72 attach at an upward angle to inner frame support body 22 and outer upper end portions 47 attach at a complimentary angle to radial perimeter support members 60 as by welding.

In the triangular embodiment, the ends of the perimeter rails 32 and the ends of the bag support brackets are cut and attached at a 60 degree angle so as to form a continuous tubular perimeter railed structure 28.

Referring to FIG. 6, there is shown a plan view of another embodiment 80 of the bag support frame 20 having four bag support brackets 30 and, with four equal length perimeter rails, form a substantially square railed perimeter 28. This embodiment supports four heavy bags B from respective bag support brackets 30. Four upper radial perimeter support members 60 extend horizontally outward from inner elongate frame support body 22 to respective support brackets 30 and attach in the manner as described above in the triangular embodiment. Four lower radial support members 70 (not shown) provide bracing between the inner support body 22 and the outer end portions of upper radial perimeter support members 60. In this embodiment, the ends of perimeter rails 32 and bag support brackets 30 are cut at a 45-degree angle and attached as by butt-welding.

Referring to FIG. 7, there is shown a plan view of another embodiment 90 of the bag support frame 20 having five bag support brackets 30 and, with five equal length perimeter rails, form a substantially pentagonal railed perimeter 28. This embodiment supports five heavy bags B from respective bag support brackets 30. Five upper radial perimeter support members 60 extend horizontally outward from inner elongate frame support body 22 to respective support brackets 30 and attach in the manner as described above in the triangular embodiment. Five lower radial support members 70 (not shown) provide bracing between the inner support body 22 and the outer end portions of upper radial perimeter support members 60. In this embodiment, the ends of perimeter rails 32 and bag support brackets 30 are cut at a 36-degree angle and attached as by butt-welding.

Referring to FIG. 8, there is shown a plan view of another embodiment 100 of the bag support frame 20 having eight bag support brackets 30 and, with eight equal length perimeter rails, form a substantially octagonal railed perimeter 28. This embodiment supports eight heavy bags B from respective bag support brackets 30. Eight upper radial perimeter support members 60 extend horizontally outward from inner elongate frame support body 22 to respective support brackets 30 and attach in the manner as described above in the triangular embodiment.

Eight lower radial support members 70 (not shown) provide bracing between the inner support body 22 and the outer end portions of upper radial perimeter support members 60. In this embodiment, the ends of perimeter rails 32 and bag support brackets 30 are cut at a 22.5-degree angle and attached as by butt-welding. Lateral angle supports 102 are attached between upper radial perimeter support members 60 and perimeter rails 32 as desired for added support.

The inventive multiple heavy bag stand is preferably made of steel or other appropriate material. As an example, the embodiment having the triangular upper frame 20 may have 3″×3″ mechanical steel tubing for the railed perimeter and the horizontal radial perimeter support members, 2″×2″ mechanical steel tubing for the lower radial support members, 8″×0.5″ wall steel pipe for the stanchion and frame inner support, and 3 standard 150 lb flanges for the 8″ pipe.
