FIELD OF THE INVENTIONThe present invention relates to an adjustable head for use to fix and guide a retractable screen, such as a mosquito screen or net, to the frame of a door, a window or a French door.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONIn the field to which the present invention belongs, it is known to install a retractable screen, most of the time in the form of a mosquito net, within the frame of a door, a window or a French door. By way of non-limitative examples of such a retractable screen installed onto the frame of a door or window, reference can be made to U.S. Pat. No. 6,591,890 issued on Jul. 15, 2003 and to European Patent No. EP 1,158,135 B1 issued on Dec. 8, 2004.
The problem that always exists during installation of such a retractable screen lies in the respective height of the screen as compared to the height of the frame where it has to be installed. No standard product actually available on the market can be adjusted if there is a difference between the height of a non-standard frame and the one of screen. As a result, the manufacturer of screen has to deliver a product that has been pre-adjusted in factory to fit with the very specific dimension of the frame of the door of each client.

More specifically, the object of the invention is to provide an adjustable head that an installator may manually adjust with a very simple tool such as a blade, a knife, scissors or a saw, such substantially facilitating the installation of a screen, especially a retractable mosquito net, having height of conventional size, without having to adjust to the height of the door or window where the retractable screen is to be installed.
As is of common practice, the adjustable head according to the invention which is intended to be used for fixing and guiding a retractable screen to a frame of a door, a window or a French door basically comprises:
-
- a semi-tubular rail comprising a rounded crest and two opposite lateral sides each provided with an internal surface and an external surface, the rail being of a given length;
- two sliding bars mounted in front of each other on the inner surfaces of the rail, the sliding bars extending over the full length of the rail and being devised to receive and guide the retractable screen along the rail; and
- a holding plate mounted onto the rail for fixing the adjustable head onto the frame with a fixation means, the holding plate extending over the full length of the rail and being positioned so as to extend in the same plane as one of the lateral sides of the rail.
The adjustable head according to the invention is improved in that its holding plate has a given height and is provided with at least one cutting line extending parallel to the rail in order to permit reduction of the height of the plate by folding and/or cutting and thus to permit positioning of the adjustable head onto the frame as a function of the respective sizes of the frame and retractable screen.
In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention, the holding plate comprises several cutting lines extending in parallel relationship with respect to each other onto.
To the Applicant's knowledge, there is no adjustable head presently available, which permits to install a retractable screen having a standard height to the frame of a door, a window or a French door having a height different from a conventional and standard height.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
As is shown in
As is of common practice, the adjustable head (1) is intended to fix and guide the upper part of the retractable screen (3) comprises inter alia, a vertical rigid support (2) and a net (4). Because this kind of retractable screen is well-known per se, it shall not be described thereinafter in greater details.
Indeed, as previously mentioned, the invention essentially lies in the adjustable head which permits to install the retractable screen (3) onto the frame of the French door (7). The lower part of the rigid support (2) of the screen as well as the net (4) lay and slide onto a rail (6) fixed to the lower part of the frame. The upper part of the support (2) and net (4) are held by the adjustable head (1).
As is better shown in
The holding plate (13) is mounted onto the rail in such a manner as to fix it onto the frame (5) of the French door. As is shown in
In accordance with the invention, the holding plate (13) comprises at least one and preferably several cutting lines (18). These cutting lines may consist of grooves, slots of varying depths or a succession of small holes. Their purpose is to make the plate easy to cut along the cutting lines without reducing its rigidity. The holding plate may have only one cutting line or, as mentioned hereinabove, several lines located on one side only or on both sides in front of each other, as is shown in
Of course, the holding plate (13) must have a thickness that is thin enough to allow the installator:
-
- to manually fold the holding plate (13) along one of its cutting lines (18); or
- to cut it along one of said lines (18) with a blade, a knife, scissors or a saw in order to reduce the height of the holding plate (13) and thus allowing easy adjustment of the adjustable head within the frame (5) of the French door if this frame is smaller in size, as is illustrated in
FIG. 4 b; and - to allow screws or nails to be inserted into the holding plate (13) in order to fix it to the frame (5).
According to a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention, the whole height of the adjustable head (1) including the holding plate (13) and the semi-tubular rail (9) is equal to about 3″. The holding plate (13) contains on each of its faces sixteen grooves (18) spaced apart from each other at a distance of about ⅛″. The thickness of the holding plate (13) between of its grooves is equal to about 0.026″.
The different element that forms the adjustable head, namely the semi-tubular rail (9), the two sliding bars (11) and the holding plate (13), can be welded, glued or screwed to each other. Preferably, however, the adjustable head (1) is made of one single piece. This piece can be made of extruded aluminum or of any other material to be used according to the user's needs. Aluminum has the advantage of giving to the adjustable head (1) a flexibility that permits to fold easily and manually the holding plate (13) along the selected groove (18) and/or to cut it easily with any kind of blade. Aluminum also gives high rigidity to the whole adjustable head (1).
In view of the above, one may understand that the adjustable head (1) according to the invention is unique and offers a great polyvalency, whatever be the respective sizes of the retractable screen (3) and the door or window (7).
It is obvious that numerous modifications could be made to the preferred embodiments disclosed hereinabove without departing from the scope of the present invention.
The many features and advantages of the invention are apparent from the detailed specification, and thus, it is intended by the appended claims to cover all such features and advantages of the invention which fall within the true spirit and scope of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and variations will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation illustrated and described, and accordingly, all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, failing within the scope of the invention.
