Description
PRIORITY

The present invention claims priority under 35 USC section 119 based upon provisional application Ser. No. 60/730,508 filed on Oct. 26, 2005.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

As technology has developed, computers have become more powerful, yet also more compact and lightweight. Various notebook or laptop computers are widely available, from manufacturers including, for example, Compaq, IBM, Apple, NEC, Toshiba, etc. These computers generally have a base section containing a keyboard, disk drives, power supply, and other components. A screen or upper section is generally attached to the base section by a hinge, so that the upper section can be pivoted upwardly during use. The upper section typically includes the screen, speakers, and occasionally other controls or components. When the computer is not in use, the screen is folded flat against the base, forming a compact package. The screen section is held closed by a latch. The upper and lower sections or housings are often made of hard plastic, to offer some level of protection against impact, spilled liquids, and other adverse environmental conditions. However, the hard plastic case or housings are themselves subject to abuse, such as chipping, scratching, etc.

To protect the entire computer, including the hard plastic housings, various computer cases have been used. These known cases generally zip open to receive the computer with cloth or foam padding on some or all sides. Often, such computer cases have handles or carrying straps. While these types of cases have been successfully used, they have certain disadvantages. For example, the case must be zipped open and the computer removed before it can be used. Power and peripheral cables generally must be disconnected before placing the computer in the case, and then reconnected before use. In addition, the case offers no protection to the computer, when the computer is not in the case. Moreover, such computer cases are generally bulky and can be relatively heavy (in relation to the computer itself). Furthermore, such computer cases cannot offer the ability to store discs and other accessories needed with the laptop. Accordingly, there is a need for an improved cover or case for portable computers. Other and further objects will appear hereinafter.

The edges of the first sheet 102 and the second sheet 104 are joined on three sides in order to form the storage section. The first sheet 102 and the second sheet 104 are sized to approximately the size of the laptop cover 100. The storage area is defined by a first bottom liner sheet 210 which may be clear plastic or any other suitable material and a first top liner sheet 208 which may be clear plastic or any other suitable material. The first top liner sheet 208 and the first bottom liner sheet 210 are sandwiched between and joined to the first sheet 102 and the second sheet 104 along three sides in order to form the first storage section 202. The side edge of the first top liner sheet 208 and the first bottom liner sheet 210 are not joined along the side edge of the laptop cover 100 to allow access to the first storage section 202. The edge of the first top liner sheet 208 may not be joined to the edge of the first sheet 102 so that a additional storage section could be used. Likewise, the edge of the first bottom liner sheet 210 may not be joined to the edge of the second sheet 104 so that a further storage section could be accessed.

FIG. 2 additionally illustrates a second storage section 204 which is formed from a second top liner sheet 212 and a second bottom liner sheet 214. The second top liner sheet 212 and the second bottom liner sheet 214 may be formed from clear plastic or other suitable material. The second top liner sheet 212 and the second bottom liner sheet 214 are joined along the edges and the second top liner sheet 212 may include a slot 108 to allow access to the second storage section 204.

FIG. 1 illustrates a plurality of similar formed storage sections. The current application will describe two of the storage sections. Formed below and in front of the second storage section 204, a third storage section 220 is defined by the third top liner sheet 212 and the third bottom liner sheet 208. These may be sized to accept a computer disk.

FIG. 2 additionally illustrates a first pocket sheet 106 which is positioned on a portion of the second sheet 104 to cover the second storage section 204 and the third storage section 220 and to provide a surface to mount additional storage sections. The openings for the second storage section 204 and the third storage section 220 are shown in the form of slits 108 as illustrated in FIG. 1.

FIG. 1 and FIG. 2 illustrates a first expandable pocket 110 which is attached to the first pocket sheet 106 to define a first expandable storage section 206, and the first expandable pocket 110 includes an first expandable pocket cover 112 for the pocket opening which is detachably connected to the first expandable pocket 110 by an attachment device 118 which may be Velcro, buttons, snaps or of any other suitable device to connect the first expandable pocket cover 112 to the first expandable pocket 110.

FIG. 1 illustrates a second expandable pocket 114 which is attached to the second sheet 104 define an second expandable storage section 304 and includes a second expandable pocket cover 116 which is detachably connected to the second expandable pocket 114 by a second attachment device 124 which may be Velcro, buttons, snaps or any other suitable device.
