Garment Decoration

Abstract

The present garment includes a header having a plurality of spaced elements depending there from without obscuring the substrate. A fastener secures the header to the substrate so that ends of the elements move relative to the garment as the garment moves. The header may be mounted adjacent a hole in the garment and may over lay the hole. A kit for decorating a garment includes a header having a plurality of spaced elements depending there from so that the elements move relative to the garment when attached to a garment as the garment moves; and a fastener for removable securing the header to the garment so that the elements extend vertically without obscuring the garment.

This application claims the benefit of under 35 U. S. C. 119 (e) and incorporates by reference provisional application 60/805,408 filed Jun. 21, 2006.

BACKGROUND AND SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The present disclosure is for decoration for a garment and more specifically for decoration of a garment which may include a hole for a pocket or exposing a portion of the body of the wearer.

Holes in the garment to provide decoration are shown, for example, in U.S. Pat. No. 3,828,368. The exposure is for the material below to provide a contrast in color. There is also bare minimum of color described in the Lam patent.

A removable pocket to provide access to the interior of the pocket and to the wearer's body is described in U.S. Pat. No. 4,446,573 to Green. Ornamentation in a hole of a garment to give the appearance of a tattoo is shown in U.S. Pat. No. 6,526,589.

These are many examples of decorations for garments including holes that either provides unrestricted viewing of portions of the body of the wearer or obstructions of the opening of the wearer. The decorations are fixed relative to the garment and do not change its display or view of the hole in the body as the garment moves.

The present garment includes header having a plurality of spaced first elements depending there from without obscuring the substrate. A fastener secures the header to the substrate so that the first elements move relative to the garment as the garment moves. The header may be mounted adjacent a hole in the garment and the first elements may over lay the hole. The fastener maybe one of snap, Velcro, zipper adhesive, hook/eye and button/button hole. A plurality of second elements may cross the first elements to form a mesh. The garment may be one of pants, shirt, jacket, and blouse.

The garment may have a second hole adjacent the first hole; and the elements lay over the holes without obscuring the holes. The garment header may include ornamentation.

A kit for decorating a garment includes a header having a plurality of spaced first element depending there from so that ends of the first elements move relative to the garment when attached to a garment as the garment moves; and a fastener for removable securing the header to the garment so that the first elements extend without obscuring the garment.

A method of decorating a garment includes creating a hole in the garment which exposes a portion of the body of the wearer; and attaching a header having a plurality of spaced element depending there from to the garment adjacent the hole so that the elements lay over the hole without obscuring the hole in the garment.

These and other aspects of the present disclosure will become apparent from the following detailed description, when considered in conjunction with accompanying drawings.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

FIG. 1 shows a garment 10 having a substrate 12 of fabric having openings 14, 16 and 18 therein. Opening 16 and 18 are adjacent holes. As illustrated, they may be in the rear or buttocks section of a pair of pants. The decoration includes a header 22 and a plurality of vertical elements 24 depending there from. The spacing of the elements 24 lie across the opening 14 without obscuring the opening 16 or the substrate 12. As illustrated for the opening 16 and 18, a fastener 26, which may be, for example, Velcro, is secured to the fabric or substrate 12 complimentary Velcro element is provided on the header 22.

The elements 24 may be, for example, beads, straps or other material secured to or form a unitary part of the header 22 such that the ends will sway or move horizontally relative to the garment as the garment moves or the wearer of the garment moves and walks. This provides an eye-attracting element to the decoration for the garment 10 as well as the opening 14. The purpose of the spacing of the vertical elements 24 is to create a swaying and peek-a-boo look without obscuring the opening, hole or the garment or its substrate. The header 22 may include ornamentation 23 as illustrated in FIG. 1 with the word “love,” for example. This may also be the name of the wearer or any other catchy phrase or ornamentation such as jewels, buttons, etc.

As illustrated in FIG. 2, the garment may be a shirt, blouse or sweater 30 having an opening or hole 34 on for example the breast portion of the garment or substrate 32. The decoration 20 includes the header 22, vertical elements 24 and a plurality of transverse elements 28 lying across the vertical elements 24. The combination of the vertical elements 24 and the transverse elements 28 create a mesh which lay over the hole 34 without obscuring the hole or the garment or its substrate. The combination of the vertical strips 24 and the horizontal strips 28 may create decorative patterns, for example, a flag, the wearers' name, sayings or other combination of visual elements.

The fastening device may be any well-known fastening device including but not limited to a snap, Velcro, zipper, adhesive, hook and eye, button and button hole. These are removable attachments. If permanent attachment is desired, the decorative element 20 may be sewn to the garment. By using a removable fastener, the decorative element over the holes 14, 16, 18 and 34 may be changed for providing different accents, appearances or colors. This allows a single pair of pants, for example, blue jeans, or a pair of black pants or sweater to have multiple decorations like changing pins, scarves, or other decorative objects. Multiple decorative elements 20 can be provided in a single packet offering different colors, different shapes and different messages.

Although the holes have been shown on garments opposite the breast plate or the buttocks, they may be provided on other locations on different garments. For example, in children's garments, the knee is a very common location of a hole on trousers either intentionally formed or naturally from wear and tear and the decorative element may be secured thereto. The present decorative element may be used on garments which have to be modified to provide the hole, which may be a decorative shape itself, like for example, the heart shown in FIG. 1 or the garment may already have a hole, for example, in the knee or the buttocks to which a decorative element can be provided.

The decorative element 20 may also be adjacent an opening 19 which may be a pocket opening with a pocket or the pocket removed to reveal the body of the wearer as shown in FIG. 3. The decorative element 20 is shown adjacent and not covering the opening 19, but may be mounted to cover the opening 19 as in the previous figures. The angular or skewed mounting of the decorative element 20 provides an attractive ornamentation and may be mounted anywhere on the garment without or displaced from an opening or hole as shown in FIG. 4.

The ability to have a decorative element 20 which may be mounted horizontally is shown in FIGS. 5 and 6. The spaced elements 24 extend between a pair of headers 22. The headers are spaced such on the garment 10 such that the elements 24 are not taught but dangle and remain spaced. This allow the elements to move relative to the garment 10 as the garment moves and not obscure the garment or an opening. In FIG. 5, the headers 22 are mounted adjacent the heart shaped openings 14 with the elements 24 extending over the opening 14. In FIG. 6, the headers 22 are mounted adjacent and between a pair of openings 17 with the elements 24 extending between the openings 17. As with the decorative element 20 of the previous figures, the decorative element may be used any where on a garment.

Although the present embodiments has been described and illustrated in detail, it is to be clearly understood that this is done by way of illustration and example only and is not to be taken by way of limitation. The scope of the disclosure is to be limited only by the terms of the appended claims.

Claims

1. A garment comprising:

a substrate;

a header having a plurality of spaced first elements depending there from without obscuring the substrate; and

a fastener securing the header to the substrate so that the first elements move relative to the garment as the garment moves.

2. The garment according to claim 1, wherein the substrate includes a hole and the header is secured to the substrate adjacent the hole.

3. The garment according to claim 2, wherein the first elements lay over the hole without obscuring the hole in the substrate.

4. The garment according to claim 2, wherein the hole exposes a portion of the body of the wearer of the garment.

5. The garment according to claim 2, wherein the hole is for a pocket of the garment.

6. The garment according to claim 2, wherein the garment has a second hole in the substrate adjacent the first hole; and the vertical elements lay over the holes without obscuring the holes

7. The garment according to claim 1, wherein the fastener is one of sewing stitches, snap, Velcro, zipper, adhesive, hook/eye and button/button hole.

8. The garment according to claim 1, wherein the first elements extend horizontally from the header with an end not attached to the head being free to move.

9. The garment according to claim 1, including a second header, the first elements are connected at their ends between the headers, and a fastener securing the second header to the substrate so that the first elements are not taut and can move relative to the garment as the garment moves

10. The garment according to claim 1, including a plurality of second elements crossing the first elements to form a mesh.

11. The garment according to claim 1, wherein the garment is one of pants, shirt, jacket, and blouse.

12. A kit for decorating a garment, the kit comprising:

a header having a plurality of spaced first elements depending there from so that the first elements move relative to the garment when attached to a garment as the garment moves; and

a fastener for removably securing the header to the garment so that the first elements extend without obscuring the garment.

13. The kit according to claim 12, wherein the fastener is one of snap, Velcro, zipper, adhesive, hook/eye and button/button hole.

14. The kit according to claim 12, including a plurality of second elements crossing the first elements to form a mesh.

15. The kit according to claim 12, including a plurality of headers having different first elements.

16. The kit according to claim 12, wherein the first elements extend horizontally from the header with an end not attached to the head being free to move.

17. The kit according to claim 12, including a second header, the first elements are connected at their ends between the headers, and a fastener securing the second header to the substrate so that the first elements are not taut and can move relative to the garment as the garment moves

18. A method of decorating a garment comprising:

creating a hole in the garment which exposes a portion of the body of the wearer; and

attaching a header having a plurality of spaced vertical element depending there from to the garment adjacent the hole so that the vertical elements lay over the hole without obscuring the hole in the garment.

19. The method according to claim 18, wherein the vertical elements depend from the header so as that ends of the elements move horizontally as the garment moves.

20. The method according to claim 18, wherein the header is attached by one of sewing, snap, Velcro, zipper, adhesive, hook/eye and button/buttonhole.

21. The method according to claim 18, including a plurality of transverse elements crossing the vertical elements to form a mesh.
