Citrus tree named 'Red Tacle'

A new and distinct variety of Citrus clementina characterized as to novelty by bearing seedless fruit and reddish fruit flesh. The fruit bearing period for the plant is between about mid December and mid January.

Description
FIELD OF THE INVENTION

A new clementine citrus tree Citrus clementina hybrid is described. The new variety name ‘Red Tacle’ is desirable to the consumer because the fruit is characterized by having seedless blood flesh. Because the ‘Red Tacle’ variety is sterile (i.e., a triploid), it cannot be cross pollinated. As a result, the consistency of the fruit of ‘Red Tacle’ is substantially immune from being adversely affected by any unwanted hybridization from similar varieties in neighboring fields. That is, any resultant fruit crop remains seedless even if cross pollinated with other varieties had occurred.

BACKGROUND OF THE NEW PLANT

The present invention relates to a new and distinct variety of clementine citrus tree hybrid, i.e., Citrus clementina hybrid, developed from a mutant originating from a triploid ‘Tacle’ hybrid obtained from a cross of Citrus clementina variety Monreal clementine 2×(female parent)×Citrus sinensis variety Tarocco orange 4×(male parent).

The original triploid Tacle variety cross was carried out in the spring of May 1980 and designated with the original number as A146. The successive rescue of the subsequent immature embryos was recovered by in vitro culture four months after pollination. In 1983, the first trees of the triploid Tacle were grafted on Troyer citrange and were planted in the experimental orchard at Palazzelli (Lentini) Italy. The first fruits of the triploid ‘Tacle’ hybrid were subsequently produced six years later in 1989.

In 1994, the triploid mutation ‘Red Tacle’ had emerged which yielded a seedless and a substantially more redder fruit (i.e., having a higher anthrocyanin content) which distinguished it from the fruit of the triploid ‘Tacle’ hybrid. Except for the new seedless and redder fruit, the triploid mutation ‘Red Tacle’ maintaining the same or similar characteristics of the original A146 triploid ‘Tacle’ hybrid. The first fruits from a graft of the original triploid mutation of ‘Red Tacle’ appeared in 1998 which confirmed the differentiation between the original A146 triploid ‘Tacle’ hybrid and the A146 triploid ‘Red Tacle’ mutation.

Asexual reproduction of the A146 mutation ‘Red Tacle’ triploid was performed by conventional bud grafting of the new variety and has shown that the new characteristics are stabilized and permanently fixed through successive propagation. Asexual reproduction was started at 1993 at Italy and has continued uninterrupted. So far up to 6 sequential successive graftings have been performed which demonstrate that the ‘Red Tacle’ triploid hybrid exhibits permanently fixed characteristics throughout successive grafting generations. Characteristics of Red Tacle are definitively different from the older Tacle variety. Further, these distinguishing characteristics of Red Tacle have been found to be invariant throughout each of the crop harvests.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The A146 triploid mutant, designated ‘Red Tacle’, is characterized by dark reddish fruit bearing no seeds. The advantages of the ‘Red Tacle’ with respect to the original triploid ‘Tacle’ mandarin is that the ‘Red Tacle’ is seedless and more red. The A146 triploid ‘Tacle’ cultivar seedlessness characteristics are linked to self incompatibility and are greated influenced by the presence of allocompatible foreign pollens. In contrast, the A146 ‘Red Tacle’ hybrid mutation is a triploid mandarin and as a result is not influenced by cross pollination and other environmental changes because the ‘Red Tacle’ is sterile. In addition parthenocarpic crops, such as citrus, frucification of triploid genotypes can be achieved without requiring pollination.

The tree is ‘Red Tacle’ is vigorous and thorny. The canopy is thick and similar to Tarocoo. The fruit is easy to peel and is shaped like a big clementine. The skin of fruit is dark orange and smooth. The color starts to break in mid November and the fruit ripens in between about mid-December and mid-January when the pulps acquires the distinctive characteristics of the anthocyanin pigmentation. The reddish color of the ‘Red Tacle’ fruit is more similar to the fruit of orange ‘Tarocco’ than of the ‘Monreal’ clementine.

BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANT

The following is a detailed description of the ‘Red Tacle’ new variety of Citrus clementina based on observations made of plants grown in commercial nursery production practices at Palazzelli (Lentini) in Italy.

Tree:

Form—tree.

Origin—1996 mutation from a cross of Citrus clementina variety Monreal clementine 2×(female parent)×Citrus sinensis variety Tarocco orange 4×(male parent).

Classification: Botanical: Citrus clementina hybrid. Common: Mandarin citrus. Cultivar: ‘Red Tacle’.

Shape—Medium in size, somewhat round.

Thorns—Thorns 1-10 mm length.

Branching—Upright.

Canopy—Moderately dense.

Bark—Immature: Smooth, green RHS 137A,

Bark—Mature Smooth, yellow-green RHS148A

Leaf—Size: Narrow width, 36 mm, length 78 mm.

Leaf Blade—short to medium,

Leaf Blade—cross section slightly concave tapered-pointed.

Leaf Petioles—Wingless 12 mm length 1.5 mm in diameter.
