Safety candle

Abstract

A self-extinguishing candle comprising wax and a wick embedded therein, the improvement comprising providing at least one fire resistant area on the wick to control interval burning.

Description

BACKGROUND

The product will be implemented in future manufacturing procedures in various types of candles. Candles are responsible for a wide array of accidental fires each year in homes, college dormitories, commercial spaces etc. People simply forget that they are burning and they become very hot or hot wax melts onto items that are flammable and a fire is started. Many institutions have banned the use of candles because of related tragedies and deaths. Even though candles may be banned from an area it does not mean they are not present. Candles have an abundance of uses and have been synonymous with romance, emergency lighting, atmosphere lighting, and pleasant smells to name a few. Considering their multiple uses and popularity, a ban on candles will never truly exist; instead candles need to be made safer. That is the reason for the “Safety Candle” to make our world a safer place through its implementation.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

The invention will be applied in the manufacturing phase of candle making. It will be comprised of a metal band, or other fire resistant bands covering, or infused into, the wick in predetermined intervals correlated to the burning time of the candle (See FIG. 1. and 2.). This will ensure that the candle will self-extinguish at predetermined time intervals (e.g. one hour, two hour, three hour etc). This ensures safety and will reduce many accidental fires. Once the candle has extinguished itself the next band will be removed from the wick or burned off for the following lighting and use (See FIG. 1. and 2.).

EXAMPLE

This is an example only and should not be construed as limiting the scope of the invention, which is set forth in the attached claims. An at home candle making kit was purchased, which included candle gel wax, 50 pre-tabbed 3″ and 6″ wicks, 1 bottle of liquid dye, and 2 oz of scent. Different fire retardant materials were tried on the wick only. Before going through the process of making candles, different materials and thicknesses of the flame retardant material were tried First muffler tailpipe tape and combinations of tinfoil were tried. It was found that the tinfoil was easier to work with and it actually stopped the flame well on the wick alone. After many trials at many different intervals, thicknesses, and lengths of wicks it was determined that metal bands would be a better alternative.

After many different trials with different increments of metal bands around the wick it was successful in determining different burn intervals with different spacing lengths of the metal bands. The bands were stainless steel and 10 mm in length and 2 mm in diameter. They were about 0.5 mm thick and fit over the wick snugly. This findings made it possible for me to file for a patent.

Claims

1. A self-extinguishing candle comprising wax and a wick embedded therein, the improvement comprising providing at least one fire resistant area on the wick.

2. The candle of claim 1, wherein the wick has a plurality of fire resistant areas.

3. The candle of claim 2, wherein the fire resistant areas are formed by metal bands wrapped around the wick.

4. The candle of claim 3, wherein the metals bands comprise steel.

5. The candle of claim 3, wherein the metal bands are wrapped around the wick at regular intervals.

6. The candle of claim 2, wherein the fire resistant areas are formed by fire resistant chemicals infused into the wick.

7. A candle with alterations to its wick to create and manipulate timed intervals of open flame burning.
