BAGS WITH REMOVABLE LINERS

Abstract

A removable liner for various bags and containers that can be easily removed and replaced with a clean removable liner. The removable liner is a barrier which protects the exterior bag from the contents of the bag and can be removed or can be kept in place permanently. An integrated, interior lip-flap is positioned within the bag to hold the removable liner securely in place.

Description

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a cosmetic makeup bag, case, or tote and more particularly pertains to such a bag fitted with a removable liner.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Cosmetics or make-up bags are used to transport cosmetics and toiletries and are known in the prior art. There are numerous brands, sizes and designs on the market today. There are bags designed to be carried in purses or pocketbooks, brief cases, and luggage. They can also be used to keep cosmetics and toiletries organized in desks at work, in bathrooms or in gym bags.

A common problem with the bags currently on the market is that the inside of the bag can quickly become soiled from make-up or cosmetics that spill or leak from containers. Cosmetics like lipstick, liquid foundation and mascara are common culprits. Cleaning the inside of the bag once soiled and sticky is usually not effective or satisfactory. It is also time consuming to remove make-up stains from the inside of these bags. The inside of the bag always looks dirty and stained. Additionally, makeup that has been caked inside the bags transfers to the loose cosmetic/toiletry containers in the bag making a sticky and dirty mess of the make-up/toiletry containers.

Rather than mess with a time consuming and ineffective cleaning, it would be much easier to use a specially designed removable liner that can easily be removed from the bag when stained or soiled. A new removable liner would be available to insert into the bag once this happens.

Liners are known in the art and have been contemplated to protect containers from damage but not liners which are designed to be both fully integrated within the bag to protect the exterior shell from spills and soiling from the interior contents. Previous approaches include rigid, insertable and reusable liners for insulated food and beverage carrying containers (USPA No. 20050035119 and U.S. Pat. No. 6,564,992); a rigid, reusable insert liner for large soft-shell bags to protect sporting items during transportation (USPA No. 20020038775); non-integrated disposable liners for protection of containers to hold food and/or liquids (USPA No. 20050035119; U.S. Pat. No. 5,913,443 and U.S. Pat. No. 3,933,263); and a non-integrated liner which provides the inner structure for an exchangeable exterior (U.S. Pat. No. 5,009,319). None of these are fully integrated systems which are also designed to protect the interior face of the outer container.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The general object of the invention, which will be described, is to provide an easy and convenient method of both inserting and removing an interior removable liner from the exterior shell portion of a bag. The removable liner is specifically fitted under an integrated, interior lip-flap positioned at the perimeter of the opening of the bag and is specifically designed to secure the removable liner into place inside, unobtrusively, protecting the exterior bag from spills, leaks and damage from the interior contents. Once soiled or damaged a new removable liner is then available to insert into the bag to replace the soiled one.

For example, the present invention embodies a cosmetic bag with an integrally fitted, removable liner including: an exterior bag made of an outer material and a separable, removable liner configured to releasably integrate into the exterior bag. The liner is fitted within the exterior bag under an integrated, interior lip-flap of the exterior bag which releasably secures the removable liner by insertion of the removable liner under the interior lip-flap. The integrated, interior lip-flap is connected along a perimeter edge at the opening of the bag; extending the perimeter length of the opening of the bag and folding inwards into the bag. In use the integrated-interior lip-flap folds over the removable liner to releasably secure the removable liner to the interior face of the exterior bag.

In accordance with other aspects of the invention, the removable liner is releasably secured in place at the perimeter of the opening of the bag under the integrated, interior lip-flap by joining fastening means, for example snaps, on the removable liner and the complement fastening means under the integrated, interior lip-flap on an interior face of the exterior bag.

In accordance with still further aspects of the invention, the removable liner is held releasably secure by insertion under the integrated, interior lip-flap of the exterior bag and held in place frictionally rather than by fastening means.

In accordance with yet other aspects of the invention, a wire element may be sewn into the integrated, interior lip-flap which allows the flap to be pressed into place conforming to the interior contours of the exterior bag to unobtrusively hold and conceal the perimeter edge of the removable liner. The wire element may be similar to those found in malleable, positionable wire-edged ribbons used generally for decorative trim. The wire element adds rigidity to the integrated, interior lip-flap and specifically holds the removable liner in place when there are no additional fastening means and instead, it is held in place frictionally; trapped between the integrated, interior lip-flap and the interior face of the exterior bag.

These and other aspects of the invention will be described in further detail below.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

FIGS. 1 and 2 illustrate an example of a cosmetic pouch 10 which includes an exterior bag 20 with a removable liner 25. The exterior bag 20 further includes: a sealed bottom 30 and two sides 40 forming an interior compartment 43; a perimeter edge 67 that provides an opening to the interior compartment 43; an exterior face 22; and an interior face 65. The interior compartment 43 receives the removable liner 25. The removable liner 25 is shaped to fit inside the exterior bag 20 with a perimeter edge 57 of the interior liner 25 being co-located with the perimeter edge 67 of the exterior bag 20. The removable liner 25 further includes a sealed bottom 32 and two sides 37 forming an interior compartment 23. The perimeter edge 57 provides an opening to the interior compartment 23 of the removable liner 25. The removable liner 25 also includes an exterior face 38 and an interior face 44.

The removable liner's proportions and shape are similar to the exterior bag 20. The removable liner 25 is shaped to fit the shape of the exterior bag 20 but is slightly smaller in size to be easily nested within the exterior bag 20 and also easily removable from the exterior bag 20. When the removable liner 25 is placed within the interior compartment 43 of the exterior bag 20, the removable liner 25 protects the interior face 65 of the exterior bag 20 because contents only come in contact with the interior face 44 of the removable liner 25.

The removable liner 25 is fastened into the exterior bag 20 by a plurality of fastening means 45 on the exterior face 38 of the removable liner 25, and their complementary receiving fastening means 70 on the interior face 65 of the exterior bag 20. The complement receiving fastening means 70 are positioned proximal to the perimeter edge 67 on the interior face 65 of the exterior bag 20; i.e. not visible on the exterior face 22. The fastening means 45 on the exterior face 38 of the removable liner 25 are juxtaposed to the receiving fastening means 70 on the interior face 65 of the exterior bag 20 such that they are aligned when the removable liner 25 is nested within the exterior bag 20 and easily engaged to secure the removable liner 25 to the interior face 65.

The removable liner 25 is further held in place by positioning the removable liner 25 under an integrated, interior lip-flap 50 at the open perimeter edge 67 of the exterior bag 20. The integrated, interior lip-flap 50 may be formed, for example, by a one inch flap extending from the exterior bag 20 and folded into the interior of compartment 43 of the exterior bag 20 and over the perimeter edge 57 of the removable liner 25 (also folding into the interior compartment 23 of the removable liner 25). The plurality of fastening means 45 of the removable liner 25 are positioned so as to be hidden beneath the integrated, interior lip-flap 50 once folded into place. The integrated, interior lip-flap 50 furthermore prevents debris from getting between the removable liner 25 and the interior face 65 of the exterior bag 20.

The exterior bag 20 may be composed of any man-made or natural material such as leather, vinyl, plastic, nylon, polyester, microfiber, cotton, wood or straw of various weaves and durability. The material used for the exterior bag 20 would be designed to integrate with the removable liner 25. The exterior bag 20 may be washable and/or disposable.

FIG. 2 illustrates the removable liner 25 configured in a similar shape as the exterior bag 20 of FIG. 1 to fit the shape of the exterior bag 20. The removable liner 25 can be a man-made synthetic or natural material, transparent or opaque. The removable liner 25 can be made of a washable fabric. The fastening means 45, and the complement fastening means 70 are for example, but are not limited to snaps, hook-and-loop fasteners (e.g. Velcro®), buttons, adhesive, grommets, or the like.

FIG. 3 illustrates how the integrated interior lip-flap 50 is formed to fold into the interior compartment 43 of the exterior bag 20 when the removable liner 25 is nested within the exterior bag 20. As better exemplified here, the fastening means 70 on the interior face 65 of exterior bag 20 are positioned so that they are engaged with the complementary receiving fastening means 45 of the removable liner 25 when the integrated, interior lip-flap 50 is folded over the perimeter edge 57 of the removable liner 25.

FIG. 4A and FIG. 4B illustrates how the integrated, interior lip-flap 50 operates to secure the removable liner 25 into place next to the interior face 65 of the exterior bag 20. FIG. 4A illustrates the integrated, interior lip-flap 50 in an ‘open’ configuration to receive the removable liner 25. The integrated, interior lip-flap 50 may be a continuous flap of material from the exterior face 22 of the bag 20 extending past the perimeter edge 67 and folding into the interior compartment 43 of the exterior bag 20. Alternatively the interior, integrated lip-flap 50 may be an additional piece of material sewn into the perimeter edge 67 by conventional means.

FIG. 4B illustrates the integrated, interior lip-flap 50 in a ‘closed’ configuration once the removable liner 25 is secured into place. In one embodiment, the integrated, interior lip-flap 50 may be held in a ‘closed’ configuration by strips of hook and loop fasteners 80, 85. For example, one strip of hook fasteners 80 may be positioned on the integrated, interior lip-flap 50, and one strip of loop fasteners 85 may be positioned on the interior face 44 on the removable liner 25 such that the hook and loop fasteners 80, 85 come in contact and are engaged when the integrated, interior lip-flap 50 is folded over and in a ‘closed’ configuration of FIG. 4B.

As exemplified in FIG. 4B, in use the user opens the exterior bag 20 replacing the removable liner 25 by lifting the integrated, interior lip-flap 50 and exposing the fastening means 45, 70, and unfastening the removable liner 25 from the interior wall 65 by disengaging the fastening means 45 on the removable liner 25 and the receiving fastening means 70 on the exterior wall 65 of the exterior bag 20. Once unfastened the removable liner 25 can be removed and a clean replacement removable liner 25 may then be inserted into the interior compartment 43 of the exterior bag 20 and fastened into place by the fastening means 45, 70, (e.g. snaps), positioned under the integrated, interior lip-flap 50. The integrated, interior lip-flap 50 is lowered over the fastening means 45, 70 and pressed into the ‘closed’ configuration to unobtrusively hide the fastening means 45, 70 and also secure the removable liner 25. Once the integrated, interior lip flap 50 is folded into place, as in FIG. 4B, the perimeter edge 57 of the removable liner 25 is fully concealed thus preventing debris from falling between the removable liner 25 and the interior face 65 of the exterior bag 20.

In another embodiment, the integrated, interior lip-flap 50 may have a wire element 95 embedded within it such that in the ‘closed’ configuration the wire element 95, acts to conform the integrated, interior lip flap 50 to the interior face 65 of the exterior bag 20, holding the removable liner 25 in place within the exterior bag 20. The wire element 95 may be embedded within piece of material folded over and sewn together by conventional means, such as in the hem of a garment, to form the integrated, lip-flap 50. Alternatively, a fabric, wire-edged ribbon containing the wire elements may be sewn into the perimeter edge 57, such that the fabric ribbon forms the integrated, interior lip-flap 50 in the interior compartment 43 of the exterior bag 20.

FIG. 5 illustrates an example embodiment of the removable liner 205 including integrated organizer compartments 105, 110. The organizer compartments may include, for example, pocket compartments of various sizes 105 (to hold smaller items in place during transport) and a loop member 110 (which slideably holds items in place, e.g. lipstick tubes, comb). Other organizer compartments 105, 110 may include, but are not limited to, various sized pouches, rings, ties, slide-holders, slots, straps, and the like for separately holding and organizing interior contents. The organizer compartments 105, 110 can be made of the same or different material of the removable liner 205, and may have closure devices 117, such as zippers, snaps, buttons, hook and loop closures, and the like. It is contemplated that different configurations of removable liner 25, 205 will be interchangeable for a particular type and sized exterior bag 20, thus facilitating substitution of differently configured removable liners 25, 205 as the user deems necessary. For example, the removable liner 25 without organizer compartments 105, 110 as shown in FIG. 2 may substitute for the removable liner 205 with organizer compartments 105, 110 shown in FIG. 5 in order to expand the interior compartment 43 of the exterior bag 20 to fit larger items.

FIGS. 6A and 6B illustrates an example embodiment of a cosmetic bag 120 that includes an exterior bag 200 of cylindrical shape with a fitted removable liner 305, where the removable liner 305 also has a cylindrical shape. The exterior bag 200 includes a bottom receiving portion 125 and a top lid portion 130 fitted to the bottom receiving portion 125. The bottom receiving portion 125 has a perimeter edge 140 that provides an opening to an interior receiving compartment 155, a sealed bottom face 145, and a single continuous side 150 that defines a cylindrical shape and also forms the interior receiving compartment 155. The top lid portion 130 is also of a cylindrical shape. The top lid portion 130 has a perimeter edge 170 that provides an opening to an interior compartment 185, a sealed top face 175, and a single continuous side 180 that defines the cylindrical shape and the interior compartment 185 in the top lid portion 130. The exterior bag 200 also includes an exterior face 165, and an interior face 167, and may also include a carrying handle 115. In this example, the handle 115 is attached to the exterior face 165 of the exterior bag 200 on the top lid portion 130.

The bottom receiving portion 125 and the top lid portion 130 are stackably positioned such that the top lid portion 130 is fitted onto the bottom receiving portion 125 and connected by a connection means 190 positioned between the bottom receiving portion 125 and the top lid portion 130. The bottom receiving portion 125 and the top lid portion 130 are further connected by a closure device 55 positioned proximate to the perimeter edge 140 of the bottom receiving portion 125 and the perimeter edge 170 of the top lid portion 130. The closure device 55, for example a zipper with a pull tab 60, may extend the entire perimeter edge 140, 170, positioned between the bottom receiving portion 125 and the top lid portion 130 to attachably engage the bottom receiving portion 125 and the top lid portion 130. The top lid portion 130 is disengaged from the bottom receiving portion 125 by disengaging the closure device 55 to open the exterior bag 120.

Fastening means 70 may be positioned on the interior face 167 proximate to the perimeter edge 140 of the bottom receiving portion 125 of the exterior bag 200. When the integrated, interior lip-flap 50 is folded over into the interior receiving compartment 155 of the bottom receiving portion 125 of the exterior bag 200, the fastening means 70 on the interior face 167 are concealed beneath it. When folded into place the integrated, interior lip-flap 50 is designed to hold the removable liner 305 securely, while also conforming to the cylindrical shape of the bag.

The removable liner 305, as shown in the cut-away of FIG. 6B, is cylindrically shaped to fit within the bottom receiving portion 125 of the exterior bag 200, but is slightly smaller in size to be easily nested within the exterior bag 200 and also easily removable. The removable liner 305 includes a sealed bottom 320 and a continuous single side 310 defining an interior compartment 350, with an opening proximate to the perimeter edge 340. The removable liner 305 also includes an exterior face 360 and an interior face 370. When the removable liner 305 is nested within the exterior bag 200, the interior face 370 of the removable liner 305 is in contact with contents of the cosmetic bag 120. Fastening means 45 may be positioned proximate to the perimeter edge 340 on the exterior face 360 of the removable liner 305, so that the fastening means 45 are aligned with the receiving complement fastening means 70 positioned on the interior face 167 of the bottom receiving portion 125. When the integrated, interior lip-flap 50 is folded over the removable liner 305 the fastening means 45, 70 are concealed beneath it.

FIG. 7 is an example embodiment of a box-shaped cosmetic case 400 including a bottom receiving portion 410, a fitted top lid portion 450, and a fitted removable liner 500. The bottom receiving portion 410 is defined by five sides 415-419, one side of which is a sealed bottom 419. The four sides 415-418 and the sealed bottom 419 form an interior compartment 425, with an opening at a perimeter edge 430. The top lid portion 450 has five sides 455-459, one side of which is a sealed top 459. The four sides 455-458 and a sealed top 459 form a body of the lid portion, with an opening at a perimeter edge 460 which fits over the perimeter edge 430 of the bottom receiving portion 410 of the cosmetic case 400. The cosmetic case 400 further has an exterior face 480, an interior face 490, and may have one or more carrying handles 495 on the exterior face 480 of the cosmetic case 400.

The bottom receiving portion 410 and the top lid portion 450 of the cosmetic case 400 are connected by a connection means 470, such as a hinge, between the bottom receiving portion 410 and the top lid portion 450. The cosmetic case 400 opens and closes upon the hinge in a manner similar to a standard suitcase, such that the perimeter edges 430, 460 of the bottom receiving portion 410 and the top lid portion 450 are brought in close proximity when closed. The cosmetic case 400 may also include a closure device 485 between the bottom receiving portion 410 and top lid portions 450. The closure device 485, such as a zipper, may extend along the perimeter edge 430 of three sides 416, 417 and 418 of the bottom receiving portion 410 and the perimeter edge 460 of three sides 456, 457, 458 of the top lid portion 450 such that when the closure device 485 is engaged it attachably joins the top lid portion 450 to the bottom receiving portion 410 of the cosmetic case 400 keeping the contents within.

An integrated, interior lip-flap 590 is positioned on the interior face 490 of the bottom receiving portion 410 proximate to the perimeter edge 430. In use the fastening means 545 on the removable liner 500 are brought into contact and engaged to the receiving complement fastening means 570 on the interior face 490 of the bottom receiving portion 410 of the cosmetic case 400. The fastening means 570 are positioned on the interior face 490 so that when the integrated, interior lip-flap 590 folds over into the interior compartment 425 of the bottom receiving portion 410 of the cosmetic case 400, and over the removable liner 500, the fastening means 545, 570 are concealed.

The removable liner 500 is configured to fit the bottom receiving portion 410 of the cosmetic bag 400. The removable liner 500 includes a receiving portion 510 defined by five sides 515-519, one side of which is a sealed bottom 519, forming an interior compartment 525, with an opening at one perimeter edge 530. The removable liner 500 also includes an exterior face 535 and an interior face 540. In this example, the removable liner 500 has integrated organizer compartments 550 positioned on the interior face 540, on sides 515-518, including, for example, large organizer pocket compartments 550.

FIGS. 8A and 8B illustrates an example embodiment of a cosmetic tote 600, with an exterior shell 605 and a fitted removable liner 700. The exterior shell 605 in this example is rectangular in shape and includes four sides 610-613, an exterior face 620 and an interior face 630. A perimeter edge 650 is defined at the four sides 610-613 where an integrated lip-flap 690 is positioned on the interior face 630. The integrated lip-flap 690 folds onto the interior face 630.

When the cosmetic tote 600 is ‘open,’ it lies flat exposing the interior face 630 of the exterior shell 605. In use, the user folds or rolls the interior face 630 of the exterior shell 605 end-over end into an interior compartment 660, which is defined by rolled configuration 670 as shown in FIG. 8B. When in the folded or rolled configuration 670 only the exterior face 620 of tote 600 is accessible.

The removable liner 700 is configured to fit the dimensions of the exterior shell 605 of the cosmetic tote 600. The removable liner 700 includes four sides 730-733, a perimeter edge 735, an exterior face 710, and an interior face 720. The interior face 720 of the removable liner 700 includes a plurality of organizer compartments 740 to hold contents in the tote 600. In use, the removable liner 700 is fitted onto the interior face 630 of the exterior shell 605 under the integrated, interior lip-flap 690, such that, when secured in place, the removable liner 700 fully covers the interior face 630 of the exterior shell 605. The removable liner 700 has a plurality of fastening means 645 positioned on its exterior face 710 proximate to the perimeter edge 735. The receiving complement fastening means 675 are positioned on the interior face 630 of the exterior shell 605, also proximate to the perimeter edge 650. The fastening means 645, 675 are engaged by pressing the removable liner 700 onto the interior face 630 of the exterior shell 605. After the fastening means 645, 675 are engaged, the integrated lip-flap 690 is folded into place over the perimeter edge 735 of the removable liner 700 concealing the fastening means 645, 675.

The removable liner 700 has integrated organizer compartments 740. In this example three large pocket compartments 740 to hold the contents of the bag in place during transport are shown. Also in this example, a closure device 745 on the organizer compartments 740, for example a zipper, is illustrated. The closure device 745 is helpful to hold contents within the organizer compartment pockets 740 during transport.

While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated and described, as noted above, many changes can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. With respect to the above description, it is to be realized that the optimum dimensional relationships for the parts of the invention, to include variation in size, materials, shape, form, function, and manner of operation, assembly and use, are deemed readily apparent and obvious to one skilled in the art, and all equivalent relationships to those illustrated in the drawings and described in the specification are intended to be encompassed by the present invention.

Therefore the foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principals of the herein disclosed invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown, and accordingly, all suitable modification and equivalent may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention

Accordingly, the scope of the invention is not limited by the disclosure of the preferred embodiment. Instead, the invention should be determined entirely by reference to the claims that follow.

Claims

1. A bag with an integrally fitted, removable liner, the bag comprising:

an exterior bag having a lip around an opening, a bottom, an interior face, and an exterior face, the exterior bag comprising: an integrated, interior lip-flap that releasably secures the removable liner at the lip around the opening of the exterior bag by insertion of the removable liner under the integrated, interior lip-flap,

wherein the integrated, interior lip-flap extends around the perimeter of the lip at the opening of the exterior bag and folds towards the bottom of the exterior bag and over a seam between the removable liner and the lip to secure the removable liner to the interior face of the exterior bag.

2. The bag of claim 1, wherein the removable liner that is secured into interior fully covers the interior face of the exterior bag.

3. The bag of claim 1, further comprising a means for securing the removable liner in place at the perimeter of the opening of bag under the integrated, interior lip-flap.

4. The bag of claim 3, wherein the removable liner is held releasably secure by insertion under the integrated, interior lip-flap of the exterior bag and held in place frictionally.

5. The bag of claim 1, wherein the lip-flap further comprises:

a wire element embedded within the integrated, interior lip-flap being conformable to the interior contours of the exterior bag to hold the removable liner in place.

6. The bag of claim 1, where the lip-flap further comprises:

a fastening means on the lip-flap that is attachably engaged with a fastening means on the interior face of the removable liner when the lip-flap is folded towards the bottom of the exterior bag and over the seam between the removable liner and the lip.

7. The lip-flap of claim 6, wherein the fastening means on the lip-flap and on the interior face of the exterior bag include hook and loop fasteners.

8. The bag of claim 1, wherein the exterior bag includes a closure device at the perimeter edge of the receiving portion of the exterior bag to prevent release of contents of the bag during transport.

9. The bag of claim 1, wherein the exterior bag is a pouch.

10. The bag of claim 1, wherein the exterior bag is a tote.

11. The bag of claim 1, wherein the exterior bag is a case.

12. The bag of claim 1, wherein the removable liner is made of a washable material.

13. The bag of claim 1, wherein the removable liner is made of a washable fabric.

14. The bag of claim 1, wherein the removable liner includes organizer compartments.

15. The bag of claim 1, further comprising handle members attached to the exterior of the exterior bag.

16. The bag of claim 1, wherein the opening of the exterior bag can be closed by a closure device.

17. An integrated interior lip-flap attached at the perimeter edge of the receiving portion of the exterior bag, configured to fold into the exterior bag and over the removable liner to releasably secure the removable liner in position within the exterior bag.

18. The integrated interior lip-flap of claim 17, wherein the integrated interior lip-flap is an extension of the bag material of the exterior bag configured to fold over the perimeter edge and fold into the exterior bag to releasably secure the removable liner in position within the exterior bag.

19. The integrated interior lip-flap of claim 17, wherein the lip-flap further comprises:

a wire element embedded within the integrated, interior lip-flap being conformable to the interior contours of the exterior bag to hold the removable liner in place.
