CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

This application claims the benefit of U.S. provisional application Ser. No. 61/103,120 filed Oct. 6, 2008.

BACKGROUND

1. Field of the Invention

The invention relates to reusable shopping bag systems and kits.

2. Background Art

The widespread and temporary use of shopping bags is responsible for the consumption of valuable natural resources while causing considerable problems with disposal, decomposition, and recycling. Because most shopping bags are designed for short-term or single use only, the production and manufacture of paper and plastic bags is a significant and wasteful use of resources. The manufacture of paper bags generates significantly more air and water pollutants than the production of plastic bags, but it takes far less energy to recycle these paper products. Even so, the rate of recycling of either type of bag is extremely low and, consequently, most shopping bags end up in landfills where it can take them centuries to degrade. In addition, millions of trees are cut down every year to produce billions of paper bags for use in the United States alone. The use of reusable shopping bags effectively assists in the conservation of natural resources, wildlife preservation, and the reduction of pollution.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

As required, detailed embodiments of the present invention are disclosed herein; however, it is to be understood that the disclosed embodiments are merely exemplary of the invention that may be embodied in various and alternative forms. The figures are not necessarily to scale, and some features may be exaggerated or minimized to show details of particular components. Therefore, specific structural and functional details disclosed herein are not to be interpreted as limiting, but merely as a representative basis for teaching one skilled in the art to variously employ the present invention.

The present invention relates to a reusable shopping bag system which offers a convenient and individually expressive means for carrying and storing items, thereby assisting in the conservation and preservation of the ecology. The present invention includes collapsible or foldable bag systems that may incorporate an outer bag along with multiple inner bags of varying sizes suitable for carrying or storing items of purchase including, but not limited to, groceries, clothing, and personal items. The shopping bag systems, when stored, may be collapsible or foldable into a convenient and transportable form. The bags, which can be taken out and used as needed, offer shoppers a simple, convenient, and stylish means to preserve the world's natural resources.

With reference first to FIG. 1, a shopping bag according to the present invention is depicted and generally designated with reference numeral 10. According to one aspect of the present invention, shopping bag 10 may be sized to hold approximately 2 to 3 plastic grocery bags worth of items. Shopping bag 10 includes opposed side walls 12, 14, opposed end walls 16, 18 joined with the side walls 12, 14, and a bottom wall 20 joined with the side and end walls 12, 14, 16, 18 to define a storage compartment 22 therein. According to one aspect of the present invention, the dimensions of shopping bag 10 may be 13.5 inches wide, 16 inches tall, and 7 inches deep, although it is understood that shopping bag 10 is not limited to these dimensions.

Shopping bag 10 may include one or more sets of handles 24, 26, attached to either opposed side walls 12, 14 or end walls 16, 18, or possibly formed within side or end walls 12, 14, 16, 18 themselves. According to one aspect of the present invention, two sets of handles 24, 26 may be provided in different lengths (for example, but not limited to, 8.5 inches and 24 inches) to offer a choice of lengths to make carrying groceries comfortable and easy. Of course, other handle configurations are also possible. Shopping bag 10 may contain fasteners such as, but not limited to, a zipper, draw-string, hook and loop (e.g., VELCRO®) material, or snaps, provided on side walls 12, 14 or end walls 16, 18, or a top close flap (not shown) which allow the shopping bag 10 to be closed.

Turning now to FIGS. 2a and 2b, an expandable shopping bag 110 according to the present invention is depicted, wherein elements corresponding to those of shopping bag 10 are designated with like reference numerals with the addition of a “1” prefix. In addition to the features described above with respect to shopping bag 10, side walls 112, 114 or end walls 116, 118 (as depicted herein) may include expansion panels 130 which may be revealed via zippers 132 or other fasteners (e.g., buttons, snaps, etc.) to allow the shopping bag 110 to expand and provide additional volume to the storage compartment 122. According to one aspect of the present invention, the dimensions of shopping bag 110 may be 13.5 inches wide, 16 inches tall, and 7 inches deep before expansion (FIG. 2a), and may be 22.5 inches wide, 16 inches tall, and 7 inches deep after expansion (FIG. 2b), although it is understood that shopping bag 110 is not limited to these dimensions. When expanded, shopping bag 110 may be sized to hold approximately 3 to 5 plastic grocery bags worth of items. Of course, shopping bag 110 is not limited to expanding along the dimension depicted in FIG. 2b, but could alternatively expand to increase the height of shopping bag 110 or even expand multiple times.

FIGS. 3 and 4 illustrate sectioned shopping bags 210 according to the present invention, wherein elements corresponding to those of shopping bags 10, 110 are designated with like reference numerals with the addition of a “2” prefix. In addition to the features described above with respect to shopping bags 10, 110, shopping bag 210 includes interior dividers 240 for subdividing the storage compartment 222 into a plurality of sub-compartments 242. According to one aspect of the present invention, as illustrated in FIG. 3, shopping bag 210 may have dimensions of 13.5 inches wide, 16 inches tall, and 7 inches deep, with dividers 240 that create three sub-compartments 242 measuring 4.5 inches wide by 7 inches deep.
