SkyRest Child+ travel pillow

Abstract

A travel pillow designed specifically for commercial airline travel is disclosed. The unique feature of this travel pillow is that it is designed to provide support for the legs of children and adults. It essentially allows a child to stretch out their legs directly out front and horizontal to their seat so there is no need to lie across accompanied travelers. The pillows shape is roughly a rectangular cube, when inflated to its maximum level it measures 12″ by 18″ by 18″, the pillow is firm but soft and sized and shaped to fit the leg room area in front of an airplane seat.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Invention idea has come from my (Tracey Hunter) experience of travelling with young children on long length flights which are tough enough! After packing, lugging luggage and airport cues with your children the last thing you want after take off is to be frozen in one position in your seat because your child is lying against you or have their legs across your lap.

After experiencing this a few times it gave me the idea to come up with an inflatable pillow that would occupy the leg room (seat pitch) area in front of the passenger seat. This would allow the child to sleep with their legs stretched out, in front, horizontally with their seat rather than lying in other directions across their parents or accompanied passengers.

After some research I could not find any product like my idea, however I did find the SkyRest® Travel pillow. (U.S. Pat. No. 6,647,573). I approached this company and have come to an agreement to design the SkyRest® Child+ pillow.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

SkyRest Child+ is an inflatable pillow for airline travel specifically designed for children. It will enable the child to stretch out in front of their seat instead of lying their legs across their travel companions. When inflated to the maximum level it measures 12″ by 18″ by 18″ and will occupy the legroom area in front of an airline seat. The pillow has a valve which allows the user to inflate and deflate quickly.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

SkyRest® Child+ is an inflatable pillow specifically designed for children during long duration flights. When inflated the pillow will occupy the legroom area (Seat Pitch) so the child's legs lie stretched out in front, horizontally with their seat instead of lying their legs across their travel companions. See FIGS. 3 and 4.

It is an inflatable pillow so this allows for easy portability and compact size for travel when not inflated. One key feature is the size of the valve used to inflate and deflate the pillow. The diameter is at least ½″ allowing easy inflation by mouth, with minimally restricted airflow. When it comes time to deflate the pillow, it can be done rapidly for the same reason.

As shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the pillow is roughly a rectangular cube. When the pillow is inflated to the maximum level it measures 12″ by 18″ by 18″. The material used can be either sheet vinyl or PVC of about 0.003″ thickness. The pillow can be made from only three pieces of material; top, bottom and composite sides. Five of the 6 sides will have a fibrous coating commonly referred to as “flocking”.

The ‘plus’ symbol in SkyRest® Child+ is added in the invention/product title because this pillow can also be used by Adults to raise their legs or inflated to a desired level to be a footstool. See FIGS. 5 and 6.

Claims

1. An inflatable pillow, measures 12″ by 18″ by 18″ at maximum inflated level, generally in the shape of a rectangular cube, said pillow having six sides with flat surfaces with a quick inflate/deflate valve, said pillow adapted to be placed in the leg room area in front of an airplane seat.
