Description

THIS INVENTION relates to a cover for a luggage container.

The invention is to be used in the context of luggage containers, such as for example suitcases, briefcases, duffel bags, and the like, of the type having a body which defines at least one compartment for receiving luggage, and at least one handling formation fast with and projecting from or moveable to project from the body for facilitating handling of the luggage container. The bodies of such luggage containers can be of hard sturdy construction or can be of relatively flexible construction. In some cases, the bodies of such luggage containers are constructed to be reversibly expansible, to permit adjustment of the size of at least one compartment defined thereby. Lately, most luggage containers of the type in question, especially when in the form of suitcases, are in the form of wheeled containers, being provided with ground engaging wheels fast with and located at or adjacent lower ends or floors of their bodies, and with handles, also mounted on their bodies, by means of which the containers can be handled when their wheels engage surfaces. Such handles are typically moveable, e.g. in telescopic fashion, between operative conditions in which they project from the bodies of the containers, to permit easy handling of the containers, and stowed or retracted conditions in which they do not project from the bodies of the containers, to permit easy stowage or transport of the containers.

In accordance with one aspect of the invention there is provided a cover for a luggage container, the cover including a cover body constructed for receipt thereof over a luggage container at least partially to cover the luggage container, and a securing arrangement fast with the cover body for securing the cover to a luggage container, to resist removal of the cover from the luggage container, thereby inhibiting undesired access to luggage contained in the luggage container.

As will be appreciated, the cover in use, on the one hand, serves to protect a luggage container against scuffing, scratching, staining, and the like and, on the other hand, it serves to combat theft of luggage contained in a luggage container.

The cover body may be of flexible and foldable construction and, when operative, defines a receiving space for at least partially receiving a luggage container, the cover body being constructed such that the size of the receiving space is adjustable, to permit receipt of the cover over a range of differently sized luggage containers.

The securing arrangement may be in the form of a lockable securing arrangement, which in use needs to be unlocked to permit removal of the cover from a luggage container.

The cover body may be provided with at least one opening for passing a handling formation of a luggage container over which the cover is received in use.

An area of the cover body surrounding each opening may be reinforced to resist tearing of the cover body in each such area.

The cover body may be of sheet material construction, with at least part thereof being resiliently stretchable to provide said adjustability of the size of the receiving space.

The cover body may be generally in the form of a sheath, defining a roof portion for covering an operatively upper wall or roof of a luggage container, a peripheral skirt portion fast with and extending along a peripheral edge of the roof, the peripheral skirt portion depending operatively downwardly from the roof portion for at least partially covering a front wall, a rear wall, and side walls of a luggage container, and an open lower end through which a luggage container is in use received into and removed from the receiving space defined by the cover body.

The securing arrangement may be fast with and located at or adjacent the lower end of the peripheral skirt portion of the cover body, being arranged for extending across the open lower end of the cover body, such that in use it extends across the floor or bottom wall of a luggage container, thereby holding the luggage container captive in the receiving space defined by the cover body.

The securing arrangement may be of two-part construction, at least one part thereof including an elongated flexible element for extending across the floor or bottom of a luggage container, one end of the elongated flexible element being fast with the peripheral skirt portion, and a free end thereof being provided with a securing formation complimentary to a securing formation provided by the other part of the securing arrangement, the other part of the securing arrangement also being fast with the peripheral skirt portion, with the securing formations of the two parts being securable together to secure the cover to a luggage container.

Said at least one part of the securing arrangement including the elongated flexible element may be constructed to permit adjustment of the length thereof, to accommodate the adjustability of the size of the receiving space.

The roof portion of the cover body may comprises a roof panel, the peripheral skirt portion of the cover body comprising a front panel for covering a front wall of a luggage container, a rear panel for covering a rear wall of a luggage container, and two side panels for covering side walls of a luggage container, the front panel, the rear panel and the two side panels being fast with the roof panel, with at least one said opening in the cover body being provided in the roof panel. A said opening may be provided in one of the side panels of the cover body.

The cover body may include at least one flap fast with and projecting from a lower end of the peripheral skirt for at least partially covering a floor or bottom wall of a luggage container.

In another embodiment, the cover body may be in the form of a sheet which is shaped to be foldable to define the receiving space, the cover also including at least one adjustment formation fast with the cover body for adjusting the size of the receiving space defined by the cover body when folded, to permit receipt of a range of differently sized and shaped luggage containers in the receiving space.

In this embodiment, the cover body may be shaped to define a roof portion for covering an operatively upper wall or roof of a luggage container, and a peripheral skirt portion fast with the roof portion for covering a front wall, a rear wall, and side walls of a luggage container.

Each adjustment formation may be fast with the peripheral skirt portion of the cover body, the peripheral skirt portion being shaped such that in use it is folded roughly in the fashion of a straight jacket around the front wall, the rear wall, and the side walls of a luggage container, with each adjustment formation, in addition to providing for adjustment of the size of the receiving space, also being configured to secure the peripheral skirt portion of the cover body around a luggage container.

Each adjustment formation may include at least one elongated flexible strap and at least one clip fast with or associated with a said strap. In a particular embodiment, each adjustment formation may include a multi-part clip arrangement of which at least one part is adjustably fast with a said strap, the other part of each strap arrangement being secured to the cover body, typically via another flexible strap.

The elongated strap of each adjustment formation may be resiliently stretchable to provide for automatic adjustment of the size of the receiving space in accordance with the size of a luggage container over which it is received.

The cover body may include a flap, conveniently forming part of the peripheral skirt portion, for covering each adjustment formation when the cover is operatively secured to a luggage container.

The securing formation may be fast with and located at or adjacent a lower end of the peripheral skirt portion of the cover body, being arranged for extending across a lower end of the cover body, such that in use it extends across the floor or bottom wall of a luggage container, thereby holding the luggage container captive in the receiving space defined by the cover body.

An outer face of the cover body may be provided with at least one identification marking, to facilitate identification of a luggage container which is covered by the cover. Each identification marking, which could be drawn, embroidered, etched, sewn, or otherwise provided onto the cover body, and a personal identification item received in the pocket will thus facilitate identification of an item of luggage which is covered and protected by the cover.

The cover body, on an outer face thereof, may be provided with an at least partially transparent pocket for receiving a personal identification item, to facilitate identification of a luggage container which is covered by the cover.

In accordance with another aspect of the invention there is provided a luggage container assembly, the assembly including a luggage container of the type in question, and a cover received over and covering at least part of the luggage container, the cover being a cover as hereinbefore described.

The cover may be secured to the luggage container.

The invention is now described, by way of non-limiting example, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings.

FIG. 9 shows, schematically, a three-dimensional view of the cover shown in FIG. 7 in its operatively folded condition.

With reference to FIG. 1 of the drawings, a cover in accordance with the invention for covering a luggage container is generally designated by reference numeral 10. As will be described in more detail hereunder, the cover 10 is used at least partially to cover a luggage container, which in this example is in the form of a wheeled-suitcase 12 (FIG. 2), on the one hand, to protect the suitcase 12 against scuffing, scratching, staining and the like and, on the other hand, serves to resist unauthorised access to and, accordingly theft of, luggage contained in the suitcase 12. The cover 10 and the suitcase 12, with the cover 10 covering and protecting the suitcase 12 forms a suitcase assembly, generally designated by reference numeral 11 in FIG. 3, in accordance with the invention. To resist the aforementioned unauthorised access to luggage contained in the suitcase 12, the cover 10 is provided with a securing arrangement (described in detail hereunder) for securing it to the suitcase 12.

The suitcase 12 is in the form of a conventional wheeled-suitcase including a body 14 defining at least one compartment within which luggage is receivable. The body 14 of the suitcase 12 described in this example is of more or less flexible construction, but is reinforced such that it automatically retains its shape. In some cases, suitcases of the type in question are, within limits, reversibly expansible in accordance with the volume of luggage to be received therein. Briefly, the suitcase 12 includes a top or roof 16, a front wall 17 (FIG. 4), a rear wall 18 and two side walls 20. The front wall 17, the rear wall 18 and the side walls 20 connect the top or roof 16 of the suitcase 12 to a bottom or base 19 of the suitcase 12. At its bottom or base 19, the suitcase 12 is provided with a set of wheels 22. The suitcase 12 is further provided with handling formations which comprise a carry handle 24 fast with and projecting from the top or roof 16, and a telescopically extensible and retractable handle 26 fast with the body 14 for extension and retraction in the directions indicated by arrow 28. In some cases, but not in this example, suitcases of the type in question can also be provided with a further carry handle fast with and projecting from one of its side walls 20.

Referring now in particular to the cover 10, it comprises a cover body 30 and the aforementioned securing arrangement which is fast with the cover body 30 and is generally designated by reference numeral 32. The cover body 30 is constructed of a flexible material which is resiliently stretchable, and has good scuff- and scratch-resistant properties, to provide the aforedescribed protection of the suitcase 12. In this example, the cover body 30 is constructed of a neoprene material. As will be appreciated, in other examples, the cover body 30 can be constructed of any other suitable material having the aforementioned properties, e.g. resiliently stretchable plastics material. Further, the cover body 30 is roughly in the shape of a sheath or pillowcase, so that it defines a receiving space within which the suitcase 12 is in use received. Thus, the cover body 30 is received over the suitcase 12 in the general fashion in which a pillowcase is received over a pillow.

In particular, the cover body 30 includes a top or roof portion 34 and a peripheral skirt portion 36 fast with and depending operatively downwardly from the top or roof portion 34. As will be appreciated, the aforedescribed portions need not be separate portions which are secured together, so that the same sheet of material which forms the roof portion 34 can also form part of the peripheral skirt portion. The peripheral skirt portion 36 includes a rear panel 38, a front panel 40 (only visible in FIG. 4) and two side panels 42, 44. In use, the top or roof portion 34 of the cover body 30 at least partially covers the top or roof 16 of the suitcase 12, the rear and front panels 38, 40 of the cover body 30 respectively cover at least part of the rear wall 18 and the front wall 17 of the suitcase 12, and the side panels 42, 44 of the cover body 30 respectively cover at least part of the side walls 20 of the suitcase 12.

The cover body 30 is provided with an opening 46 extending from the top or roof portion 34 onto the rear panel 38 for passing the carry handle 24 and the telescopically extensible and retractable handle 26 when it is extended. In other examples (not shown), when a suitcase of the type in question is provided with the aforementioned further carry handle fast with and projecting from one of its side walls 20, a further opening (not shown) for passing such further handle of the suitcase can be provided in one of the side panels 42, 44 of the cover body 30.

By virtue of the resiliently stretchable construction of the cover body 30, the cover 10 can be received over a range of differently sized and shaped luggage containers. For the same reason the cover 10 can accommodate expansion of expansible luggage containers. Further, as will also become more apparent hereunder, the cover 10, in particular its cover body 30, can be manufactured in different sizes and shapes, each accommodating, within limits, a range of differently shaped and sized luggage containers.

At a bottom open end 48 of the cover body 30, two tabs or flaps 50, 51 are secured respectively to the rear panel 38 and to the front panel 40. In turn, the securing arrangement 32 is fast with the tabs or flaps 50, 51. The flaps 50, 51 are essentially extensions of their associated panels 38, 40.

The securing arrangement 32 includes one elongated flexible strap 52 fast with the rear panel 38. The securing arrangement 32 further includes a lockable securing formation comprising two complementary clips 56, 58 respectively fast with a short connector 54 fast with the front panel 40 and with the strap 52. The clip 56 is provided with a combination lock 60 such that when the clips 56, 58 are secured together, the cover 10 can be locked in position relative to the suitcase 12, to resist removal thereof from the suitcase 12. To provide for locking of the cover 10 to the aforementioned range of differently sized and shaped suitcases, the clip 58 is movably mounted on its strap 52, such that the effective length of the strap 52, i.e. the length of the strap between the rear panel 38 and its clip 58, is adjustable, with the clip not being releasable from the strap 51. In use, the combination lock 60 has to be unlocked in order to permit removal of the cover 10 from the suitcase 12 and, accordingly, access to luggage contained in the compartment(s) defined by the suitcase 12.

Referring now to FIGS. 5 and 6 of the drawings, further embodiments of covers in accordance with the invention are shown. The cover shown in FIG. 5 is generally designated by reference numeral 70 and the cover shown in FIG. 6 is generally designed by reference numeral 80. The covers 70, 80 resemble the cover 10 and, accordingly unless otherwise indicated, like reference numerals used to indicate parts or features of the cover 10 are used to indicate like parts or features of the covers 70, 80.

The cover 70 is intended to be received over a wheel-less suitcase which is generally in the form of a briefcase 72, having a single carry handle. It is to be appreciated that the cover 70 can also be used with a suitcase with wheels. The cover 70 and a briefcase 72 together form an assembly 74 in accordance with the invention. In turn, the cover 80 is intended to be received over a luggage container which is generally in the form of an elongated duffel bag 82. Usually duffel bags, such as the one shown in this example, have two handles projecting upwardly from side walls (corresponding to front and rear walls of suitcases such as the suitcase 12) thereof and, accordingly, the cover 80 is provided with two openings for respectively passing the respective handles of a duffel bag, the two openings both being designated by reference numeral 46. Naturally, the cover 80 can be provided with a further opening in an end wall (corresponding to a side wall of suitcases such as the suitcase 12) thereof for passing a further carry handle of a duffel bags provided in an end wall thereof. The cover 80 and the duffel bag 82 together form an assembly 84 in accordance with the invention.

Referring now to FIGS. 7-9 of the drawings, a still further embodiment of a cover in accordance with the invention is generally designated by reference numeral 100. As will become more apparent hereunder, the cover 100 serves exactly the same purpose as the covers 10, 70, 80.

The cover 100 includes a cover body 102 which is of flexible and foldable sheet material construction. The cover 100 also includes three adjustment formations, generally designated by reference numerals 104, fast with the cover body 102 for adjusting, in accordance with the size of a particular luggage container, the size of a receiving space defined by the cover body 102 when it is operatively folded (FIGS. 8 and 9) and received (FIG. 8) over such a luggage container. The adjustment formations 104 are described in further detail hereunder. Further, the cover 100 includes a securing arrangement 106 fast with the cover body 102. The securing arrangement 106 is structurally and functionally similar to the securing arrangement 32 of the cover 10 and, accordingly, is not described in further detail.

The cover body 110, when viewed face-on in a laid flat condition (FIG. 7), is T-shaped, comprising a roof or top portion 108 for covering the top or roof 16 of a luggage container, which in this example as shown in FIG. 8, is also in the form of the wheeled suitcase 12, and a peripheral wall portion 110 for covering the front wall 17, the rear wall 18 and the side walls 20 of the suitcase 12. As is the case with the cover body 30 of the cover 10, the cover body 102 of the cover 100 is also provided with an opening 112 for passing the handles 24, 26 of the suitcase 12. The roof or top portion 108 of the cover body 102 is provided with an extension which provides a flap 114, the purpose of which is described in more detail hereunder. The suitcase 12 and the cover 100 (as shown in FIG. 8) together form a variant embodiment of a suitcase assembly in accordance with the invention, the assembly being generally designated by reference numeral 111.

In use, as can be seen in FIGS. 8 and 9, the roof or top portion 108 of the cover body 102 is received on top of the top or roof 16 of the suitcase 12, so that the peripheral wall portion 110 and the flap 114 of the cover body 102 depend or hang downwardly from the roof or top portion 108. The peripheral wall portion 110 is now folded around the side walls 20 and onto the rear wall 18 of the suitcase 12. When folded as hereinbefore described, the adjustment formations 104 are then used to secure ends of the peripheral wall portion 110 together on the rear wall 18 of the suitcase 12.

In particular, each adjustment formation 104 which, as foreshadowed above, also serves to secure the peripheral wall portion 110 in place relative to the suitcase 12, comprises two elongated flexible straps 116, 118 respectively fast with and projecting from the aforementioned ends of the peripheral wall portion 110, and a two-part clip, the two parts of each clip respectively being indicated by reference numerals 120, 122, fast with opposite ends of each strap 116, 118. To provide for adjustment of the size of the receiving space defined by the cover body 102 when operatively received over a suitcase, at least one of the clips 120, 122 is longitudinally adjustably secured to its associated strap 116, 118. The flap 114, by virtue of its extending or projecting from an opposite side of the roof or top portion 108 than the peripheral wall portion 110, hangs over the adjustment formations 104 in face-to-face relationship with the rear wall 18 of the suitcase 12, such that it covers the adjustment formations 104.

The two parts of the securing arrangement 106, which as mentioned above is not described in any detail, are respectively fast with an operatively lower end of the peripheral wall portion 110 and with a free end of the flap 114, such that, with the cover body 102 is operatively received over the suitcase 12, the two parts of the securing arrangement are located at or adjacent the bottom or base 19 of the suitcase 12, so that they are, in use, secured together as hereinbefore described with reference to the cover 10. When the cover 100 is operatively secured to the suitcase 12, the flap 114 thus, by virtue of its covering the adjustment formations 104, resists release of the adjustment formations 104.

The invention as described and illustrated thus provides a cover for a luggage container, which cover, by virtue of its construction, can be used to cover and to protect a range of differently sized luggage containers, or can accommodate expansion of a luggage container. Further, the cover in accordance with the invention, when covering a luggage container and with its securing arrangement being locked, resists or at least retards unauthorised entry into compartments defined by the luggage container, so that the cover will also serve to resist or at least deter surreptitious or furtive theft of luggage from luggage containers. It is to be appreciated that the cover may also be used as a media vehicle to provide advertising and identification functionality.
