The subject matter disclosed herein relates to machines and, more particularly, to systems for monitoring displacements between turbine shell portions during machine maintenance processes.
Some power plant systems, for example, certain nuclear, simple-cycle and combined-cycle power plant systems, employ turbines in their design and operation. These turbines include a set of shells which partially define a flowpath of the turbine and enclose a plurality of components including turbine buckets, rotors, etc. During maintenance, portions of these shells must be separated (e.g., an upper shell lifted off of a lower shell), so as to allow technicians access to turbine components. The large size of the turbine shells and the tight clearances between turbine components and shell portions may require that the lifting process be synchronized (e.g., portions of the upper shell being lifted in unison relative the lower shell), so as to avoid component contact and damage. In some power generation systems, this lifting may be performed by a team of technicians using tape measures and a plurality of jacks spaced about the turbine shell. The technicians attempt to synchronize the lift, and maintain a level relationship between the upper shell and the lower shell by calling out to one another current measurements and target increments for each jack. Based upon these called out target increments, the technicians use the jacks to lift the upper shell, monitoring progress and shell lift unison via comparison of periodic tape measure readings. However, this manual measurement and lifting process may be imprecise, time consuming and susceptible to human error.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTIONAs indicated herein, aspects of the invention provide for systems and devices adapted to monitor displacements between turbine shell portions during machine maintenance processes, particularly during shell separation processes. These systems include a set of members adapted to connect to an upper shell portion and a lower shell portion of a turbine. These members are communicatively connected to one another via a measuring device which is adapted to monitor (e.g., measure a vertical movement of the members and/or shell portions) a displacement/distance between the members during shell separation processes. Based on the displacement between the members, technicians may monitor/determine a set of displacement values for a joint between the upper shell and the lower shell during separation. Disposing these systems about the turbine shell during separation processes provides a comprehensive, accurate and documented record of shell displacements which may assist technicians during separation processes.
Turning to the FIGURES, embodiments of systems and devices for monitoring displacements between turbine shell portions are shown, where the systems may increase efficiency and safety in shell separation processes, by quickly and accurately identifying displacement values between turbine shell portions. Each of the components in the FIGURES may be connected via conventional means, e.g., via a wired communication, wireless communication, measurement member, magnet, bolt, or other known means as is indicated in
In an embodiment of the present invention, during a separation process (e.g., lifting of second shell portion 92), a technician may obtain a set of displacement values and/or monitor a distance between first shell portion 94 and second shell portion 92 by monitoring first member 110, second member 120, and/or measurement device 130. As members 110 and 120 are connected to shell portions 92 and 94, displacements in the spatial relationship between members 110 and 120 may be related and/or proportional to displacements between shell portions 92 and 94. In one embodiment, measurement device 130 may include a scale (shown in

In one embodiment, this plurality of systems 100 spans joint 96 obtaining a plurality of displacement values. It is understood that measurement device 130 may include a ruler, a range finder, an optical distance meter, a caliper, an ultrasonic distance meter, a radiofrequency distance meter, or any other measurement device known.

Measurement member 230 may include a scale and/or display of a set of increments (e.g., centimeters, fractions of inches, etc.) which increase in magnitude proportionate to a distance from a zero point of measurement member 230. In one embodiment, first member 210 may include a fastener 212 adapted to secure a portion of measurement member 230 to first member 210. For instance, fastener 212 may attach to a zero point (e.g., a base point, a location on measurement member 230 where the incremental value is zero), of measurement member 230. Measurement member 230 may further be communicatively connected to second member 220 so as to determine a set of displacement values. In one embodiment, measurement member 230 may be slidingly received by an aperture and/or slot in second member 220. During a separation process, measurement member 230 may be secured in place by first member 210 while second member 220 moves about (e.g., slides vertically about) measurement member 230 in response to displacement variations (e.g., lifting operations) between first shell portion 94 and second shell portion 92. Movements of second member 220 relative to measurement member 230 visually represent a set of displacement values for the separation process which may be read/recorded by a technician as second member 220 moves across the scale of measurement member 230. In one embodiment, measurement member 230 may be connected to second member 220 via a geared apparatus.
In one embodiment, second member 220 may include a base display 240 adapted to visually represent (e.g., graphically, numerically, etc.) the displacement values between first member 210 and second member 220, and/or between first shell portion 94 and second shell portion 92. In one embodiment, base display 240 may be connected to a geared apparatus which connects measurement member 230 to second member 220 and/or measurement member 230. Base display 240 is adapted to move proportionally to movements of second member 220. It is understood that first member 210 and second member 220 may be connected via a geared apparatus, a slide apparatus, or any other relative movement device. These proportional movements adjust portions of base display 240 (e.g., move elements of an analog numerical display) in response to movements of second member 220 relative measurement member 230.
