Abstract

The new style sleeping bag provides for a more efficient use of the insulating material and cover, as well as integrating the cushioning pad that is often used separately with a sleeping bag. The new style sleeping bag works the same as the current sleeping bag. It will be lighter because the integration of the cushioning pad and the sleeping cover, as the insulating material that is usually rendered ineffective is eliminated.

Description

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Current sleeping bags waste the insulating material that is under the user. Whether it is down or synthetic material, it is compressed under the user which then eliminates the loft that provides warmth. As a result, the current sleeping bag is heavier than it needs to be because it is truly a bag. The invention recognizes this fact and also the fact that a pad is generally used under a sleeping bag. The pad is necessary to provide insulation between the sleeping bag and the ground. The pad is the key to ensuring that the cold of the ground is not transferred to the sleeping bag user. The pad also provides cushioning benefit which enhances comfort. The invention recognizes the current inefficiency of the compressed insulation loft and fabric that are under the user of a sleeping bag. The compressed portion of the bag is eliminated because the new base on which the user sleeps is the pad which then has an insulating cover that can attach by a zipper to every point of the pad. Removal of this extraneous material saves weight, while still providing ground insulation and warmth to the sleeping bag user.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

In certain aspects, the present invention provides unique sleeping apparatus that can effectively provide a comfortable sleeping platform while also being lightweight for ease of carrying. In accordance with some forms of the invention, such sleeping apparatuses are configured to insulate the sleeper during use. Accordingly, in one embodiment, the present invention provides a sleeping apparatus that includes a pad and a covering. The pad is effective to separate a person from a surface, such as the ground. The covering is capable of being attached to the pad on up to four sides. Attachment of the pad and covering is configured so that there is a space between them so that a person can fit in between the pad and the cover when they are attached to each other. In accordance with certain inventive variants, the sleeping apparatus is portable. In one aspect the attachment between the pad and the cover is at least partially by one or more zippers. In one form, the pad is inflatable. In one embodiment, the pad is shaped to remove material that would not be between a person and the ground.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE EMBODIMENTS

The invention and the various features and advantageous details thereof are explained more fully with reference to the nonlimiting embodiments that are illustrated in the accompanying drawings and detailed in the following description. It should be understood that the detailed description and the specific examples, while indicating specific embodiments of the invention, are given by way of illustration only and not by way of limitation. Various substitutions, modifications, additions and/or rearrangements within the spirit and/or scope of the underlying inventive concept will become apparent to those of ordinary skill in the art from this disclosure.

As shown in FIG. 1, the new style sleeping bag differs from current sleeping bags in that it is an integrated cushioning pad (1) and insulated cover (2). The cushioning pad (1) is body length with a zipper (3) that completely surrounds the edges of the cushioning pad (1). The insulated cover (2) also has a zipper (3) that completely surrounds the edges of the cover. As shown in FIG. 2, the cover (2) can then be attached to the pad (1) by the matching zipper (3) between the pad (1) and the cover (2). The result is an integrated sleeping design in which the user sleeps on the cushioning pad with a cover that is attached to pad by the zipper.

Because the zipper allows for a connection at every point between the cushioning pad and the cover, the user can regulate temperature by the extent to which the zipper is not fully zipped. The system is also lighter than conventional sleeping bags because the portion of a sleeping bag that is under the user is wasted insulation and fabric and thus weight. The new style sleeping bag provides all of the insulation and protraction around the user while recognizing that the cushioning pad provides both comfort and necessary insulation between the user and the ground or floor. Additionally, the attachment between the cover and the pad could be done as a combination of permanent fastening, such as sewing, and one or more zippers.

In one embodiment, the invention can be shaped as the mummy-style sleeping bag. In this embodiment, the cover and the pad could be sewn together allowing access into the bag through the hole for the head.

Claims

1. A sleeping apparatus comprising:

A pad to separate a person from a surface; and

A covering attached to the pad,

Wherein the covering is capable of being attached to the pad on up to four sides and

Wherein there is space between the pad and the covering sufficient to allow a person to fit between the pad and the covering.

2. An apparatus of claim 1:

Wherein the apparatus is portable.

3. An apparatus of claim 1:

Wherein the attachment of the pad and covering is at least partially by one or more zippers.

4. An apparatus of claim 2:

Wherein the pad is inflatable.

5. An apparatus of claim 1:

Wherein the pad is shaped to remove material that would not be under a person.

6. An apparatus of claim 1:

Wherein the covering is filled with down or other insulated material.
