BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a hair styling device and more particularly pertains to an ornamental device used to create a variety of ponytail and mini ponytail hairstyles.

There exists a continuing need for a new and improved hair styling device. For those many individuals who enjoy wearing different hairstyles, it can be desirable to have more hairstyle options, including rather unique hairstyles, and useful to have a new hair styling device that is easy to use and time and cost effective. Especially for the many individuals who wear ponytails, including those who rely on the ponytail as a quick, easy, efficient and attractive way to keep the hair securely away from the face, it can be desirable to be able to change and/or dress up one's hairstyle while retaining benefits of the standard ponytail. In these regards, the present invention substantially fulfills the need.

Creating hairstyles at the back of one's head can be difficult to do by oneself. Up hairdos, such as the bun and French twist, can be time-consuming and difficult to create, and challenging to maintain, especially for physically active individuals. Going to the salon for hair styling can be time-consuming and expensive. The decorative ponytail hair styling device offers a solution by enabling the user to create a great variety of ponytail and mini ponytail hairstyles, with just one device, quickly, easily and inexpensively. The device is uniquely structured to create hairstyles symmetrically, proportionately and securely with ease. Said hairstyles retain benefits of the standard ponytail, including keeping the hair securely away from the face, being quick and easy to create, being easily maintained, even for physically active individuals, and being attractive, while providing an array of alternative styles to the standard ponytail.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The invention is a decorative ponytail hair styling device comprising four elastic loops of equal circumference attached to a decorative strand at equidistant intervals from each other, with one of the elastic loops attached at each end of the decorative strand. The decorative strand intervals are semirigid, non-collapsing but able to be curved, and are attached together in a manner that creates two flexible pivot points on the decorative strand such that the adjoining decorative strand intervals are able to be moved in any directions at any angles with ease, said pivot points being the locations where the two inner elastic loops are attached to the decorative strand. The decorative ponytail hair styling device is capable of being repeatedly positioned in a variety of configurations while maintaining the interval distances between adjacent elastic loops during hairstyling, thereby enabling the user to create with ease a great variety of ponytail and mini ponytail hairstyles, including rather unique hairstyles, and to attain symmetrical and proportionate hairstyle results that remain securely in place. The decorative ponytail hair styling device is operated by wrapping one elastic loop at a time or two nonadjacent elastic loops at once (together) around sections of hair or all the hair in different positions, combinations and manners to create an array of hairstyles.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the present invention; and

FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the present invention.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

Referring now to the invention in more detail, in FIG. 1 there is shown a perspective view of a decorative ponytail hair styling device 10 that is used to create a great variety of ponytail and mini ponytail hairstyles, including rather unique hairstyles. Said decorative ponytail hair styling device 10 comprises: four elastic loops of equal circumference, namely a first elastic loop 12, a second elastic loop 14, a third elastic loop 16 and a fourth elastic loop 18; wherein each of the elastic loops 12, 14, 16, 18 is attached to a decorative strand 20 at equidistant intervals from each other, namely a first decorative strand interval 22, a second decorative strand interval 24 and a third decorative strand interval 26, with one of the elastic loops 12, 18 attached at each end of the decorative strand 20. The decorative strand intervals 22, 24, 26 are semirigid, non-collapsing but able to be curved, and each measures one and one-quarter (1¼) inches in length. The decorative strand intervals 22, 24, 26 are attached together in a manner that creates two flexible pivot points on the decorative strand, namely a first pivot point 28 and a second pivot point 30, such that the adjoining decorative strand intervals 22, 24; 24, 26 are able to be moved in any directions at any angles with ease, said pivot points 28, 30 being the locations where the two inner elastic loops 14, 16 are attached to the decorative strand 20. The decorative strand intervals 22, 24, 26 are constructed by stringing cord with beads that are stackable, hole-against-hole in beading sequence, namely beads of the first decorative strand interval 32, beads of the second decorative strand interval 34 and beads of the third decorative strand interval 36, or constructed in an alternate manner that creates requisite semirigid, non-collapsing decorative strand intervals 22, 24, 26. The decorative ponytail hair styling device 10 is capable of being repeatedly positioned in a variety of configurations while maintaining the interval 22, 24, 26 distances between adjacent elastic loops 12, 14; 14, 16; 16, 18 during hairstyling, thereby enabling the user to create a great variety of ponytail and mini ponytail hairstyles with ease, and to attain symmetrical and proportionate hairstyle results that remain securely in place.

Still referring to FIG. 1, the decorative ponytail hair styling device 10 is preferably sized in two alternative, complementary size options in order to optimally enable creation of the full assortment of both ponytail and mini ponytail hairstyles, one size being a regular-sized device 10, which is sized for creating both ponytail and certain mini ponytail hairstyles, and the other size being a mini-sized device 10, which is sized for creating mini ponytail hairstyles. An optimal, preferred sizing for the regular-sized decorative ponytail hair styling device 10 is for the decorative strand interval 22, 24, 26 length to be one and one-quarter (1¼) inches, with the elastic loops 12, 14, 16, 18 being five (5) inches in circumference, the elastic forming the elastic loops 12, 14, 16, 18 being two (2) millimeters in diameter and the decorations of the decorative strand 20 being seven (7) millimeters in diameter. An optimal, preferred sizing for the mini-sized decorative ponytail hair styling device 10 is for the decorative strand interval 22, 24, 26 length to be one and one-quarter (1¼) inches, with the elastic loops 12, 14, 16, 18 being three (3) inches in circumference, the elastic forming the elastic loops 12, 14, 16, 18 being one (1) millimeter in diameter and the decorations of the decorative strand 20 being five (5) millimeters in diameter.

Still referring to FIG. 1, alternative sizings are possible. The circumference of the elastic loops 12, 14, 16, 18 can vary, with the elasticity of the elastic also affecting capacity of the elastic loops 12, 14, 16, 18. The elastic forming the elastic loops 12, 14, 16, 18 can vary in thickness and width for aesthetic purposes. The decorative strand 20 can vary in thickness and width for aesthetic purposes, with the decorations of the decorative strand 20 ranging from one (1) millimeter to five (5) centimeters or more in thickness and/or width and/or height, the maximum size depending on their shape and flexibility in order to allow for the requisite mobility of the decorative ponytail hair styling device 10. Generally, for aesthetic reasons, the elastic loops 12, 14, 16, 18 and the decorative strand 20 are thicker and/or wider for a regular-sized device 10 and thinner and/or narrower for a mini-sized device 10.

Mode of Construction of the Invention

In more detail, referring now to FIG. 2, which shows a cross-sectional view of the present invention, a preferred method of constructing the decorative ponytail hair styling device 10 is that one continuous elastic cord, with fabric surrounding the elastic, is used to form both the decorative strand 20 and the elastic loops 12, 14, 16, 18 of the device 10, with the elastic cord being formed into loops 12, 14, 16, 18 and knotted, forming namely a first knot 38, a second knot 40, a third knot 42 and a fourth knot 44, to secure the loops 12, 14, 16, 18 at the proper intervals 22, 24, 26 on the strand 20. The knots 38, 40, 42, 44 (especially the end knots 38, 44) can be glued for reinforcement. The two inner knots 40, 42 function as pivot points 28, 30. The elastic cord intervals, namely a first elastic cord interval 46, a second elastic cord interval 48 and a third elastic cord interval 50, are decorated with rigid or semirigid decorations in a manner that creates requisite semirigid, non-collapsing decorative strand intervals 22, 24, 26. An optimal, preferred method for decorating the elastic cord intervals 46, 48, 50 and for creating requisite semirigid, non-collapsing decorative strand intervals 22, 24, 26 is for the elastic cord intervals 46, 48, 50 to be strung with beads 32, 34, 36 that are stackable when positioned one on top of the other, hole against hole in beading sequence. Such stackable beads 32, 34, 36 are beads having sufficiently flat (generally) areas of sufficient size surrounding their holes such that they are stackable when positioned hole against hole, or, alternatively, beads of other, complementary shapes that are stackable in sequence with one another when positioned hole against hole. The elastic cord intervals 46, 48, 50 are strung with hole-against-hole stackable beads 32, 34, 36 interval by interval 46, 48, 50 as they are formed, with each interval 46, 48, 50 strung after its first adjacent elastic loop 12, 14, 16 is formed. (If attempted after the elastic loops 12, 14, 16, 18 have been formed, their knots 38, 40, 42, 44 will prevent the stringing of beads 32, 34, 36.) The beads 32, 34, 36 must have sufficiently small holes so that they will not slide off the ends of the decorative ponytail hair styling device 10. A variety of different styles, i.e., shapes, colors, sizes, number and sequence patterns, of the hole-against-hole stackable beads 32, 34, 36 are possible.

Still referring to FIG. 2, decorative strand intervals 22, 24, 26 constructed by stringing cord with hole-against-hole stackable beads 32, 34, 36 are semirigid and non-collapsing as required, and also have decorative detail all around their peripheries, which minimizes potential need for adjustment of the decorative strand intervals 22, 24, 26 during hairstyling. Alternatively, the elastic cord intervals 46, 48, 50 can be decorated by gluing or sewing rigid or semirigid decorations onto them in a manner that creates requisite semirigid, non-collapsing decorative strand intervals 22, 24, 26. This can be done as the elastic cord intervals 46, 48, 50 are formed, or afterwards. Decorative strand intervals 22, 24, 26 with decorative detail all around their peripheries are preferable to minimize potential need for adjustment of the decorative strand intervals 22, 24, 26 during hairstyling, provided the dimensions and form of the decorations allow for such a structure without creating unduly thick decorative strand intervals 22, 24, 26, this decision being made ultimately weighing both utility and aesthetics.

Still referring to FIG. 2, alternative modes of constructing the decorative ponytail hair styling device 10 are possible, including: Rubber can be molded to form a unit comprising elastic cord intervals 46, 48, 50 with the attached elastic loops 12, 14, 16, 18, and fabric covering and decorations added subsequently, by either stringing the elastic cord intervals 46, 48, 50 with hole-against-hole stackable beads 32, 34, 36, or gluing or sewing rigid or semirigid decorations onto the elastic cord intervals 46, 48, 50 in a manner that creates requisite semirigid, non-collapsing decorative strand intervals 22, 24, 26. If cord intervals 46, 48, 50 are strung with hole-against-hole stackable beads 32, 34, 36 after being formed with the attached elastic loops 12, 14, 16, 18, then an element must be added (for example, by gluing) at each end of the beaded decorative strand 20 to block beads 32, 34, 36 from sliding off the decorative strand 20.

Still referring to FIG. 2, another alternative method to construct the decorative ponytail hair styling device 10 is that the decorative strand 20 and the elastic loops 12, 14, 16, 18 can be formed separately and subsequently attached together. The decorative strand 20 can be constructed with a flexible strand other than elastic cord, such as ribbon or various other cords (e.g., fabric, flexible plastic), which is decorated either by stringing it with hole-against-hole stackable beads 32, 34, 36, or gluing or sewing rigid or semirigid decorations onto it in a manner that creates requisite semirigid, non-collapsing decorative strand intervals 22, 24, 26. Alternative methods are possible to create the attachment of the elastic loops 12, 14, 16, 18 to the decorative strand 20, including: sewing or gluing said elastic loops 12, 14, 16, 18 onto, threading them through or weaving them into the decorative strand 20.

Referring to FIG. 1, an alternative method to construct the decorative strand 20 is that plastic can be molded into semirigid sections to create the decorative strand intervals 22, 24, 26, which are subsequently attached together at their ends to form the decorative strand 20, said sections of semirigid plastic being either molded in a decorative form and/or having decorations (flexible, semirigid or rigid) attached to them. Small holes can be formed through each end of the semirigid plastic sections, where the sections can be attached together with flexible material to create two pivot points 28, 30 and where the elastic loops 12, 14, 16, 18 can be attached.

Use and Operation of the Invention

In further detail, referring to FIG. 1, the decorative ponytail hair styling device 10 is used to create a great variety of ponytail and mini ponytail hairstyles, including rather unique hairstyles, and the device 10 is structured to enable the user to obtain with ease symmetrical and proportionate hairstyle results that remain securely in place. The device 10 is operated by wrapping one elastic loop 12, 14, 16, 18 at a time or two nonadjacent elastic loops 12, 16; 14, 18; 12, 18 at once (together) around sections of hair or all the hair in different positions, combinations and manners to create an array of hairstyles. (Elastic loops 12, 14, 16, 18 are wrapped around the hair as follows: placing a length of hair of the user through said elastic loop 12, 14, 16, 18, twisting said elastic loop 12, 14, 16, 18 into a generally figure-eight configuration, folding said twisted elastic loop 12, 14, 16, 18 over itself and extending said length of hair through said folded elastic loop 12, 14, 16, 18 to position said elastic loop 12, 14, 16, 18 around the circumference of the held hair, and repeating these steps until said elastic loop 12, 14, 16, 18 is wrapped tightly around the circumference of the held hair.)

In further detail, still referring to FIG. 1, the following are detailed directions for operating the decorative ponytail hair styling device 10, which delineate specific steps for creating hairstyles with it. The decorative ponytail hair styling device 10 referred to in said detailed directions is of regular size and has beaded 32, 34, 36 decorative strand intervals 22, 24, 26. The mini-sized decorative ponytail hair styling device 10 referred to in said detailed directions, in the section “To Use Mini-Sized Decorative Ponytail Hair Styling Device” 10, also has beaded 32, 34, 36 decorative strand intervals 22, 24, 26.

Detailed Directions for Creating Hairstyles with the Invention:

    • Beaded Ponytail: Create a ponytail with all your hair using an end elastic loop 12. Adjust so the beads (of the decorative strand interval) 32 are centered on top of the ponytail. Then wrap the next elastic loop 14 around the ponytail [one and one-quarter (1¼) inches down from the first elastic loop 12], and adjust so the beads (of the decorative strand interval) 32 are centered on top of the ponytail. Continue wrapping the next two elastic loops 16, 18 (separately) around the ponytail [each one and one-quarter (1¼) inches down from the previous elastic loop 14, 16], adjusting, after wrapping each elastic loop, so the beads (of the decorative strand intervals) 34, 36 are centered on top of the ponytail.
    • Beaded Small-Crimp Ponytail: First create a beaded ponytail. Now, starting with the first section of ponytail, between the first two elastic loops 12, 14, pull the hair at the sides of the ponytail a little bit outward to create a curved shape. Continue with the next two sections of ponytail. Adjust as needed.
    • Bow Mini Ponytail: In the location you desire against your head, create a mini ponytail with a loop of hair in it using both an end elastic loop 12 and the nonadjacent inner elastic loop 16 at once (together). [Using more hair for a lower Bow Mini Ponytail and less for a higher one, do this by first wrapping both elastic loops 12, 16 at once (together) around the hair as you would a standard ponytail, but on the last wrap do not pull the ponytail all the way through.—Instead, leave a loop of hair.] Adjust so the hair-loop is on top of the ponytail and the beads (of the decorative strand intervals) 32, 34, 36 are centered on top of the hair-loop. Now divide the hair-loop into two halves and the tail into two halves. Bringing the remaining inner elastic loop 14 down between the two hair-loop halves, wrap it around one half of the tail. Bringing the remaining end elastic loop 18 down between the two hair-loop halves, wrap it around the other half-tail.
    • Bow Ponytail: With all your hair, in the location you desire against your head, create a ponytail with a loop of hair in it using both an end elastic loop 12 and the nonadjacent inner elastic loop 16 at once (together). [Do this by first wrapping both elastic loops 12, 16 at once (together) around your hair as you would a standard ponytail, but on the last wrap do not pull the ponytail all the way through.—Instead, leave a loop of hair.] Adjust so the hair-loop is on top of the ponytail and the beads (of the decorative strand intervals) 32, 34, 36 are centered on top of the hair-loop.
    • Crimped Ponytail: Create a ponytail with all your hair using an end elastic loop 12. Adjust so the beads (of the decorative strand interval) 32 are centered underneath the ponytail. Then wrap the next elastic loop 14 around the ponytail [one and one-quarter (1¼) inches down from the first elastic loop 12], and adjust so the beads (of the decorative strand interval) 32 are centered underneath the ponytail. Continue wrapping the next two elastic loops 16, 18 (separately) around the ponytail [each one and one-quarter (1¼) inches down from the previous elastic loop 14, 16], adjusting, after wrapping each elastic loop, so the beads (of the decorative strand intervals) 34, 36 are centered underneath the ponytail. Now, starting with the first section of ponytail, between the first two elastic loops 12, 14, pull the hair at the sides of the ponytail outward to create a curved shape. Continue with the next two sections of ponytail. Adjust as needed.
    • Double-Laced Ponytail: For the Double-Laced Ponytail you will be dividing your hair into two sections, one below the other. Start by creating a ponytail with hair from the upper half of your head using both an end elastic loop 12 and the nonadjacent inner elastic loop 16 at once (together). (Use more upper hair for a lower Double-Laced Ponytail and less for a higher one.) Adjust so the beads (of the decorative strand intervals) 32, 34, 36 are centered on top of the ponytail. Then create the full Double-Laced Ponytail by wrapping both remaining elastic loops 14, 18 (an inner 14 and an end loop 18) at once (together) around the rest of your hair along with the previous ponytail [one and one-quarter (1¼) inches down from it]. Adjust so the beads (of the decorative strand intervals) 32, 34, 36 are centered on top.
    • Knotted Ponytail: Create a ponytail with all your hair using an inner elastic loop 14. Adjust so the beads (of the decorative strand intervals) 32, 34 are centered on top of the ponytail. Then wrap both the adjacent end elastic loop 12 and the other inner elastic loop 16 at once (together) around the ponytail [one and one-quarter (1¼) inches down from the first elastic loop 14]. Adjust so the beads (of the decorative strand intervals) 32, 34 are centered on top of the ponytail. Now separate the section of ponytail between the elastic loops 14; 12, 16 into two halves, and pull each half outward, creating a space between them. Pull the end of the ponytail through this space [next to the rows of beads (of the decorative strand intervals) 32, 34 rather than between them], bringing the ponytail through the space in the direction of your head/neck. Then pull the ends of the ponytail down to tighten the “knot.” Wrap the last (end) elastic loop 18 around the ponytail, under the “knot.”
    • Laced Mini Ponytail: For the Laced Mini Ponytail you will be separating the upper two-thirds (approximately) of your hair into four sections, one below the other. Start by creating a mini ponytail with hair at the top of the back of your head using an end elastic loop 12. Adjust so the beads (of the decorative strand interval) 32 are to one side of the ponytail. Positioning the decorative ponytail hair styling device 10 vertically downward, create another mini ponytail by wrapping the next elastic loop 14 around the next descending section of hair along with the first mini ponytail [one and one-quarter (1¼) inches down from it]. Adjust so the beads (of the decorative strand intervals) 32, 34 are to the side of the ponytail. Continue with the next two elastic loops 16, 18 creating two more mini ponytails by wrapping each elastic loop 16, 18 (separately) around the next descending section of hair along with the previous mini ponytail [each one and one-quarter (1¼) inches down from the previous mini ponytail], adjusting, after creating each one, so the beads (of the decorative strand intervals) 34, 36 are to the side of the ponytail.
    • Laced Ponytail: For the Laced Ponytail you will be dividing your hair into four sections, one below the other, from top to bottom. Start by creating a ponytail with upper hair using an end elastic loop 12. Adjust so the beads (of the decorative strand interval) 32 are to one side of the ponytail. Positioning the decorative ponytail hair styling device 10 vertically downward, create another ponytail by wrapping the next elastic loop 14 around the next descending section of hair along with the first ponytail [one and one-quarter (1¼) inches down from it]. Adjust so the beads (of the decorative strand intervals) 32, 34 are to the side of the ponytail. Continue with the next two elastic loops 16, 18 creating two more ponytails by wrapping each elastic loop 16, 18 (separately) around the next descending section of hair along with the previous ponytail [each one and one-quarter (1¼) inches down from the previous ponytail], adjusting, after creating each one, so the beads (of the decorative strand intervals) 34, 36 are to the side of the ponytail.
    • Mini Ponytails: For the Mini Ponytails you will be separating the hair of the top third (approximately) of your head into four equal (approximately) sections, from left to right. Start by creating a mini ponytail with a small section of hair at the upper left of the back of your head using an end elastic loop 12. Adjust so the beads (of the decorative strand interval) 32 are on top of the ponytail. Positioning the decorative ponytail hair styling device 10 horizontally to the right, continue making three more mini ponytails, left to right [at one-and-one-quarter (1¼) inch intervals], with small even sections of hair using the next three elastic loops 14, 16, 18, adjusting, after creating each one, so the beads (of the decorative strand intervals) 32, 34, 36 are at the top of the mini ponytails.
    • Ponytail Cascade: For the Ponytail Cascade you will be dividing your hair into four sections, one below the other, from top to bottom. Start by creating a ponytail at the top of the back of your head with an upper section of hair using an end elastic loop 12. Adjust so the beads (of the decorative strand interval) 32 are to one side of the ponytail. Positioning the decorative ponytail hair styling device 10 vertically downward, continue creating three more ponytails with descending sections of hair using the next three elastic loops 14, 16, 18 [each one and one-quarter (1¼) inches below the previous ponytail], adjusting, after creating each one, so the beads (of the decorative strand intervals) 32, 34, 36 are to one side of the ponytails.
    • Tri-Ponytail: For the Tri-Ponytail you will be dividing hair from the upper half of your head (using more upper hair for a lower Tri-Ponytail and less for a higher Tri-Ponytail) down the middle into two equal sections. Start by using an inner elastic loop 14 to create a ponytail at the upper left of the center of the back of your head with one-half of the upper hair. Adjust so the beads (of the decorative strand interval) 32 are centered on top of the ponytail. Next, using the other inner elastic loop 16, create a second, symmetrical ponytail at the upper right of the center of the back of your head with the other half of the upper hair, and adjust so the dangling beads (of the decorative strand interval) 36 are centered on top of this ponytail. Now, using the remaining two (end) elastic loops 12, 18, create the full Tri-Ponytail by wrapping both loops 12, 18 at once (together) around the rest of your hair along with both of the previous ponytails [approximately one and one-quarter (1¼) inches below them]. If needed, adjust the triangle of beads (of the decorative strand intervals) 32, 34, 36.
    • Zigzag Beaded Ponytail: Create a ponytail with all your hair using an end elastic loop 12. Adjust so the beads (of the decorative strand interval) 32 are on top of the ponytail and to one side of it. Then wrap the next elastic loop 14 around the ponytail, approximately one (1) inch down from the first elastic loop 12, and adjust so the dangling beads (of the next decorative strand interval) 34 are on top of the ponytail and to the other side of it. Continue wrapping the next two elastic loops 16, 18 (separately) around the ponytail [each approximately one (1) inch down from the previous elastic loop 14, 16], adjusting, after wrapping each elastic loop 16, 18, so the beads (of the decorative strand intervals) 34, 36 are zigzagged on top of the ponytail, crossing from one side of it to the other.
    • To Use Mini-Sized Decorative Ponytail Hair Styling Device 10: To create the mini-ponytail version of a ponytail hairstyle, use just the upper one-third to two-thirds of your hair (or the portion of hair of your choice), instead of all of your hair, to create the hairstyle. Simply follow the preceding directions using your chosen portion of hair, mirroring the directions step-by-step using smaller hair section(s).
