RELATED APPLICATION

This application claims priority to provisional patent application U.S. Ser. No. 61/770,170 filed on Feb. 27, 2013, the entire contents of which is herein incorporated by reference.

BACKGROUND

The embodiments herein relate generally to firearms.

The Akdal MKA 1919 (MKA) is a gas operated, semi-automatic shotgun that, in some ways, resembles the AR-15 rifle. Many users appreciate the smooth feel of firing the MKA, and the relatively small number of tools needed for disassembly. However, the MKA suffers from a few awkwardly designed components that result in excessive wear and tear that cause failure in the feed ramp. As the prior art lower receiver, pistol grip, and stock are made from a single polymer unit, a failure of a component as small as the feed ramp required replacement of the entire polymer lower receiver. Embodiments of the disclosed invention solve these problems.

SUMMARY

A lower receiver assembly for a firearm can be configured to be detachable coupled to a pistol grip and a feed ramp. The lower receiver assembly includes a lower receiver configured to accommodate an upper receiver, a barrel assembly and a magazine. The pistol grip can be detachably coupled to the lower receiver. The lower receiver can be configured to permit removal of the pistol grip for pistol grip maintenance or pistol grip replacement. The feed ramp can be detachably coupled to the lower receiver. The lower receiver can be configured to permit removal of the feed ramp for feed ramp maintenance or feed ramp replacement.

In some embodiments, the lower receiver assembly further comprises a stock interface. The stock interface can be configured to be detachably coupled to a stock. The stock interface can be configured to permit removal of the stock for stock maintenance or stock replacement.

In some embodiments, the stock can be threaded and the stock interface can be threaded to accommodate the stock. In some embodiments, the firearm can be an MKA 1919 shotgun, the stock can be an AR-15 rifle stock and the pistol grip can be an AR-15 pistol grip. The pistol grip can be detachably coupled to the lower receiver with a single screw. The lower receiver can be made from aluminum to prevent wear and tear.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE FIGURES

The detailed description of some embodiments of the invention is made below with reference to the accompanying figures, wherein like numerals represent corresponding parts of the figures.

FIG. 1 shows a perspective view of one embodiment of the present invention;

FIG. 2 shows an assembly view of the present invention; and

FIG. 3 shows a side perspective view of the lower receiver.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF CERTAIN EMBODIMENTS

By way of example, and referring to FIG. 1, one embodiment of lower receiver assembly 10 is shown in the context of an entire firearm. Lower receiver assembly 10 is detachably coupled to barrel assembly B, magazine M, pistol grip T, stock S and upper receiver U. To contrast, in the prior art, the lower receiver, pistol grip and stock are manufactured as a single polymer unit. In embodiments of the present invention metal, and in particular aluminum are better at resisting wear and tear than the single polymer unit.

Turning to FIG. 2, receiver assembly 10 comprises lower receiver 20. Lower receiver 20 comprises stock interface 22. Stock interface 22 is configured to permit removal of stock S for stock maintenance or stock replacement. In some embodiments stock interface 22 is threaded to accommodate an AR-15 rifle stock.

Lower receiver 20 further comprises pistol grip adapter 16 with threaded cavity 18 configured to accommodate a single screw 38 through pistol grip T. This is in order to detachably couple pistol grip T to lower receiver 20. In some embodiments pistol grip T is an AR-15 pistol grip.

Lower receiver 20 is configured to permit removal of the pistol grip T for pistol grip maintenance or pistol grip replacement. While the use of the AR-15 rifle stock and the AR-15 pistol grip is optional, shooting completions have noticed extraordinary success when using these components on a MKA.

Lower receiver 20 is immediately adjacent to safety lever trunnion 24. Safety level trunnion 24 serves as an axel to and is attached to right side safety lever 26 and right side safety lever 28. Right side safety lever 26 and right side safety lever 28 can be configured to prevent trigger 30 from being used.

Trigger 30 is attached to lower receiver 20. Trigger 30 is configured to mechanically activate hammer 36 to strike the firing pin and ultimately discharge the shotgun. Bolt catch lever 32 is attached to lower receiver 20 and is configured to hold a bolt open for maintenance.

Magazine release button 14 is attached to lower receiver 20. Magazine release button 14 is configured to release magazine M from lower receiver 20.

Feed ramp 40 is detachably coupled to lower receiver 20. Feed ramp 40 guides a single shotgun shell from magazine M proximate the bolt. Feed ramp 40 can be easily damaged with regular use and, prior to embodiments of the disclosed invention, required replacement of the entire lower receiver. However, feed ramp 40 can now be simply removed as a single unit permitting easy maintenance. Lower receiver 20 is thus configured to permit removal of feed ramp 40 for feed ramp maintenance or feed ramp replacement.

In some embodiments, lower receiver 20 and stock S are a single unit. In those embodiments, lower receiver 20 has no need for stock interface 22, since it is already a part of the stock.

Persons of ordinary skill in the art may appreciate that numerous design configurations may be possible to enjoy the functional benefits of the inventive systems. Thus, given the wide variety of configurations and arrangements of embodiments of the present invention the scope of the invention is reflected by the breadth of the claims below rather than narrowed by the embodiments described above.
