Description
RELATED APPLICATIONS

This application claims priority to U.S. provisional patent application Ser. No. 61/819,227, filed May 3, 2013, entitled DUAL-ENDED MULTIPLE PURPOSE MAKEUP APPLICATOR, the entire contents of which are herein incorporated by reference.

TECHNICAL FIELD

The present disclosure generally relates to cosmetic devices, and more particularly to cosmetic devices for applying makeup about the eye.

BACKGROUND

Conventional techniques for applying makeup are numerous. Even confined to one area of the body, for example the eye, the conventional application techniques vary greatly.

FIG. 1 is an illustration of an eye 101. Eye 101 includes eye lashes 102, upper eyelid 103, lower eyelid 104, upper eyelid margin 105, lower eyelid margin 106, and upper eyelid platform 107. Mascara is often used on lashes 102 and applied with a tubular bristle brush. Makeup in the form of eye shadow is often applied onto the upper eyelid 103.

Newer trends are to apply a makeup to upper eyelid margin 105 as a “tight line”, to the lower eyelid margin 106 as a “water line”, and to the upper eyelid platform 107 just above the lashes as a “lid line”. In order to apply a tight line, a water line, or a lid line, special application techniques are required that utilize an eye pencil or gel liner. To apply the gel liner, gel pots and a liner brush are required.

These conventional techniques suffer from a number of deficiencies. Conventional eyeliners, i.e. pencils or gels, and mascaras typically do not last very long after application. In addition, conventional eyeliners and mascaras are susceptible to running. For instance, eye pencils and non-waterproof mascara products tend to suffer from excessively running during use. Gel liners such as the gel pots have been developed to address some of these issues by using a waterproof gel formulation, but using a brush and gel pot requires time and practice, even for the most experiences makeup artist. Further, in order to use these conventional gel liners, pencils and mascaras, a user must carry both a gel liner brush and a pot, eye pencils and mascara containers, along with any other eye makeup products that are desired.

This disclosure describes improvements over these prior art technologies.

A dual-ended multiple purpose makeup applicator device has the significant advantage of providing a user with multiple makeup applicators in one applicator device, which is a significant improvement over the prior need to carry multiple makeup components. In addition, the dual-ended multiple purpose makeup applicator device has the significant advantage of providing a method for applying a single makeup composition to both eyelashes and eyelid margins. The dual-ended multiple purpose makeup applicator device provides a multipurpose makeup applicator having dual ends adapted to enhance and define lash line and eye color using a formulation that does not run and lasts all day. The multipurpose applicator can be adapted with a formulation used in place of conventional eye makeup products to perform a hybrid function that has heretofore only been provided conventionally using a combination of eye pencils, mascara gel, gel liner, conventional mascara, etc.

Reference will now be made in detail to the exemplary embodiments of the present disclosure, which are illustrated in the accompanying figures.

The dual-ended multiple purpose makeup applicator device 201 includes a tubular body 202 defining an interior cavity 205 and having an open first end 203 and an open second end 204. Interior cavity 205 is configured to contain makeup (not shown). The applicator device 201 also includes a first makeup applicator 301 removably attachable to the first end 203, and a second makeup applicator 401 removably attachable to the second end 204.

First makeup applicator 301 includes an end cap 302, a makeup applicator portion 303 configured to apply makeup, and a connecting rod 304 having a proximal end connected to end cap 302 and a distal end connected to makeup applicator portion 303. Similarly, second makeup applicator 401 includes an end cap 402, a makeup applicator portion 403 configured to apply makeup, and a connecting rod 404 having a proximal end connected to end cap 402 and a distal end connected to makeup applicator portion 403. First makeup applicator 301 is configured to apply tight line, water line and lid line makeup to eyelid margins 105/106 and platform 107, which will be described in more detail below. Second makeup applicator 401 is configured to apply mascara to eyelashes 102, and is illustrated as a standard mascara brush. Although shown as a simple mascara brush, many shapes and sizes of mascara brushes exist and are contemplated for use with the present disclosure. End cap 302 is shown having a different shape from end cap 402 to distinguish the makeup applicator from the other; various shapes and designs to distinguish one makeup applicators are contemplated, for example one end cap may be textured while the other is not.

The first and second ends 203/204 are illustrated having threads at each end that are configured to mate with threads (not shown) on the interior of end caps 302/402 to affix the end caps 302/402 to tubular body 202. Although threaded means are illustrated, other means for removably attaching end caps 302/402 to ends 203/204 are contemplated, for example, a friction fit end/end cap configuration can be used.

Makeup applicator portions 303/403 and connecting rods 304/404 are configured to be insertable into interior cavity 205 as shown in FIG. 4 with the tips of each makeup applicator portion 303/403 being spaced apart to avoid touching, which may cause damage to makeup applicator portion 303 and/or 403. The connecting rods 304/404 lie generally along a longitudinal axis of tubular body 202. When inserted into interior cavity 205, both makeup applicator portions 303 and 403 are positioned within the makeup contained within interior cavity 205.

In an alternative embodiment shown in FIGS. 5-7, makeup applicator portion 603 and connecting rod 604 of a first makeup applicator 601 are configured to be offset from the longitudinal axis of tubular body 502. This configuration allows for tubular body 502 to be more compact, i.e. shorter, by allowing at least the tips of makeup applicator portions 603/403 to bypass each other when inserted into interior cavity. FIG. 7 illustrates that a portion of connecting rods 604/404 are adjacent to each other, the extent of which is defined by the lengths of the tubular body 502 and makeup applicator portions 603/403 and/or connecting rods 604/404. It is contemplated that second makeup applicator can be the offset applicator.

FIG. 8 is a detailed view of the first makeup applicator according to the present disclosure. The configuration of makeup applicator portion 303/603 is important to permit ease of application of the makeup on the eyelid margins 105/106 without causing discomfort and/or injury thereto. Applicator portion 303/603 is configured from a material with characteristics making it stiff enough to apply the makeup while being soft enough to not cause discomfort or injury to eyelid margins 105/106, platform 107 or eye upon accidental contact. For example, foam rubber, rubber, sponge, felt, plastic, etc., made from synthetic or natural materials can be used to configure applicator portion 303/603.

In addition to the composition of applicator portion 303/603, the shape of applicator portion 303/603 is also configured to solve existing problems. That is, applicator portion 303/603 is shaped such that it is small enough in diameter to permit the makeup to be applied in a thin line but round enough to prevent discomfort or injury to eyelid margins 105/106, platform 107 or eye upon accidental contact. Varying diameters of the applicator portion 303/603 are contemplated to apply the tight line/water line in varying thicknesses.

Ideally, the applicator portion 303/603 has a tip between 0.5 mm and 1.5 mm in diameter, is slightly rounded and composed from a soft rubber material. The size can be varied depending on the need for a thinner or thicker line. A combination of the shape and composition of applicator portion 303/603 will achieve and maximize the desired results.

In a further embodiment a single ended multiple purpose makeup applicator device 901 is shown. The single ended multiple purpose makeup applicator device 901 includes a tubular body 902 having an end 903. Makeup applicator device 901 also includes a makeup applicator 904 having an end cap 905, an applicator portion 906 and a connecting rod 907. The makeup applicator portion 905 is configured as described above with respect to makeup applicator portion 303/603 to properly apply the makeup contained within tubular body 902 in accordance with the present disclosure.

The multiple purpose makeup applicator device according to the present disclosure can be include a makeup formulation used in place of conventional eye makeup products to perform a hybrid function that has heretofore only been provided conventionally using a combination of eye pencils, mascara gel, and conventional mascara. The formulation used in combination with the multiple purpose makeup applicator device can be similar to a conventional gel liner but with the consistency of a mascara. In at least certain embodiments, the formulation is opthamologically tested and approved, hypo-allergenic and/or is non-communtagenic.

The method of applying makeup using the multiple purpose makeup applicator device will now be described. Applicator portion 303/603 of first applicator 301/601/906 is placed into the cavity 205 where the specially formulated makeup is contained. Upon removal therefrom, applicator portion 303/603/906 will have makeup contained thereon. Applicator portion 303/603/906 is then contacted with an eyelid margin 105/106 or platform 107 to which a tight line, water line or lid line is to be applied. Applicator portion 303/603/906 is moved across eyelid margin 105/106 or platform 107 to create the tight line/water line or lid line. The consistency of the makeup used along with the design of the applicator portion 303/603 can produce a gliding effect as the applicator 301/601 is moved along. Applicator portion 303/603/906 can also be dotted along eyelid margin 105/106 or platform 107 to create a tight line/water line or lid line having a dotting effect that blends over time.

Numerous benefits can be achieved by way of the techniques described herein over conventional techniques. For example, embodiments allow for lash line and eye color enhancement using a hybrid mascara and eye makeup gel that is, among others, easy to apply, waterproof, made for sensitive eyes, long lasting, and useable with contact lenses. In addition, the combination of these functions in a single applicator enables users to carry fewer products.

Various components of the system may be fabricated from material and composites to achieve various desired characteristics such as strength, rigidity, elasticity, flexibility, compliance, biomechanical performance, and durability. The components of the system, individually or collectively, may also be fabricated from a heterogeneous material such as a combination of two or more materials. Although embodiments of the present disclosure have been illustrated as separate pieces attached together, the caps and wands can also be constructed as a single element.

Where this application has listed the steps of a method or procedure in a specific order, it may be possible, or even expedient in certain circumstances, to change the order in which some steps are performed, and it is intended that the particular steps of the method or procedure claim set forth herein below not be construed as being order-specific unless such order specificity is expressly stated in the claim.

While the preferred embodiments of the devices and methods have been described in reference to the environment in which they were developed, they are merely illustrative of the principles of the inventions. Modification or combinations of the above-described assemblies, other embodiments, configurations, and methods for carrying out the invention, and variations of aspects of the invention that are obvious to those of skill in the art are intended to be within the scope of the claims.
