Electronic Device Case with Inflatable Travel Pillow

An apparatus for providing comfort to travelers is provided involving a mobile electronic device case that may be inflated into a pillow configuration useful as a travel pillow. Multiple air chambers contained within the device case having a plurality of segregated, independently-inflatable chambers therein for supporting a user's head and neck supplement the pillow and provide increased comfort. With one or more chambers therein which are inflatable to different thicknesses and firmness by a valve so as to enable the pillow to be inflated to conform the pillow to the requirements of different individuals. The present invention provides convenient storage volume as a carryon for an aircraft while providing the flexibility of selectively functioning as a pillow and an electronic device case according to the particular needs of the user.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION

This invention relates generally mobile electronic devices cases. More particularly, the invention relates to a case which may be converted into a pillow for supporting the head and cervical region of a person when the person is a passenger aboard a vehicle such as an airplane and is capable of providing variable support with controllable firmness, shape and thickness, and which occupies very lithe space when deflated.

DISCUSSION OF THE RELATED ART

Sleeping on an airplane, bus, train or other vehicles has historically posed a challenge to those forced to use these transportation methods to travel long distances. Though some transportation providers supply a small pillow for supporting a passenger's head they are often uncomfortable and difficult to use. These pillows shift easily, placing the head in awkward and uncomfortable positions. Proper head and cervical support is an important contributing factor to restful sleep. Inappropriate support of the head and cervical region can interfere with sleep, and cause stiffness and soreness.

A tangential problem results from the transportations providers need to store all of the pillows they provide and the limited space available on the vehicle. During some train journey's or airline flights, there may be a demand for a large number of pillows. In order to meet this demand, there are typically an excess pillows on aboard the vehicle because the exact demand is unknown. This excess of pillows and/or blankets typically means that these comfort systems typically utilize more than desired levels of storage space and any weight added by these systems is undesired due to the additional fuel required to transport them. As a result, less transportation providers are supplying pillows as a courtesy to their passengers.

The prior art includes several patents which teach incorporation or addition of pillow to a preexisting apparatus such as a blanket or a robe to provide increased functionality. U.S. Pat. No. 4,097,944 (Yulish) discloses a stuffed pillow which is permanently formed in the top portion of a towel. U.S. Pat. No. 4,200,942 (Case) and U.S. Pat. No. 3,689,947 (Wolf) teach a towel with a removable pillow which is either inflatable or stuffed. U.S. Pat. No. 2,883,682 (Kwake) teaches an inflatable pillow which is attachable and detachable from a towel using snapping means.

U.S. Pat. No. 3,176,315 (Freund) discloses a beach robe which doubles as a towel with an inflatable pillow. U.S. Pat. No. 4,370,755 (Crumby) discloses a poncho which has a rear panel which can be inflated to create a seat cushion for sitting. Both these fail to teach an inflatable travel pillow for the head which may also be used as a mobile electronic device case.

Most of these do not have any particular effect on travelers who are carrying mobile electronic devices along on their journey. None of them make any particular effort to provide specific support for the head and cervical region, and none of them provide an inflatable pillow with shaped recesses intended to provide clearance for the face of a person sleeping on his or her side, whereby breathing is not impeded.

Further, none of the prior art patents noted above discloses an inflatable pillow having an inner inflatable bladder constructed to provide a particular shape and/or areas of different firmness and thickness to a pillow that can also be used as a means of securely transporting a mobile electronic device such as a laptop or tablet computer.

Accordingly, there exists a need for a carrying case which protects items by isolating them from impact that may quickly and easily be converted into a travel pillow adjustable to provide optimal comfort to the traveler carrying it. Such a carrying case should overcome the above-described disadvantages associated with sleeping in vehicle seats while being small enough to use as a carry on item aboard aircraft, boats, beaches and other vehicles which require reduced storage space. The present invention effectuates these needs.

SUMMARY

The present invention addresses the aforementioned needs through providing a mobile electronic device case comprising a plurality of chambers, which can be inflated to a desired firmness for supporting a traveler's head or neck. Disclosed herein is a mobile electronic device case which is inflatable into pillow. In one embodiment, the case has several air-impervious flexible chambers therein, which are inflatable to different shapes, thicknesses and firmness to conform to the desires of a particular user. The case itself may be a soft cover placed around or enveloping the chambers to provide a comfortable place for the user to rest his or her head.

It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide and electronic device case which may be converted into a travel pillow that assists a traveler while sleeping in the confined spaces commonly associated with airplanes, trains, and boats.

Carry on luggage pieces are used for carrying various electronic devices such as laptops, tablets, electronic readers, and the like. These pieces are optimally compact, lightweight, and durable do to restrictions placed on their size and the conditions under which they are used. Various carrying cases have a padded interior to prevent items held within the carrying case from shifting and breaking. Other carrying cases having a rigid frame to inhibit the effects of direct impact and provide structural support to reduce the risk that item will be crushed or otherwise broken. It is another object to provide a carrying case which protects items by restricting movement of items within the carrying case using air pressure.

In accordance with an embodiment, a mobile electronic device case which may be converted into a pillow to support head and neck of a user is disclosed. The case includes an inflatable air-chamber assembly, fill material, interior lining, multiple valves and exterior casing. The inflatable air-chamber assembly includes at least two separate chambers that can be inflated. These air chambers may be secured in the space between the interior lining and exterior lining adjacent to the fill material. The exterior casing has a stitching that secures the interior lining in relation to the fill material and secures the fill material in relation to the air chambers. The stitching defines a depression at a predetermined position of one or more of a top surface and a bottom surface of the exterior casing.

The multiple inflatable air chambers of the present invention may be inflated to different degrees of firmness an/or thickness, to provide a particular support as desired by an individual. This enables an individual to custom fit a pillow to his or her particular desires or needs. Moreover, if a user selects a particular configuration, i.e., thickness and/or firmness, and that configuration does not prove to be acceptable, the user may simply reconfigure the pillow until a desired shape, thickness, and/or firmness is achieved by increasing or decreasing the amount of air in the individuals chambers.

At least one valve is associated with each separate chamber of the pillow to enable air to be introduced through the valve into the chamber to inflate it, or released through the valve to deflate the chamber. The valves may comprise valves of conventional construction including, but not limited to, those found on inflatable air mattresses, toys, and the like.

In another embodiment, the electronic device case may have multiple air valves. As chambers are independently inflatable, an air valve attaches to each section of a chamber to regulate air pressure in each section independently.

In one embodiment of the present invention, the center portion of one side of the pillow is recessed creating a semi-circular cavity. The purpose of such a cavity would be to provide an area for the face of a person using the pillow, when the person is lying on his or her side or placing the pillow behind his or her head. This shaped recess is designed to provide clearance for the face and neck of a person using the pillow so that breathing is not impeded when the person is lying on his or her side.

In one embodiment, the fill material may comprise memory foam. Further, an exterior casing of soft, fibrous material may be used for improved comfort. This casing may comprise soft material such as cotton, or rayon, velvet, microfiber or the like.

The electronic device case of the present invention comprises an inner air impervious chamber that may be divided into a plurality of separate cells which can be inflated to different shapes and/or degrees of firmness. A zipper or other suitable fastening means at one end of the case to prevent the contents of the case from falling out.

In yet another embodiment, the cover may be removable for ease of cleaning. In another embodiment, the entire case, including the chambers, may be dishwasher or laundry safe to facilitate the cleaning process.

It is further envisioned that, extending from each of two opposing side the case may be a fastening strap having a hook-and-loop fastener thereon. In this embodiment, the fastening straps may be secured about a passenger seat headrest or other support surface for increased stability while the vehicle is in motion.

In accordance with another embodiment, a method of manufacturing an electronic device case with an inflatable travel pillow to support head and neck of a user is disclosed. According to the method, an inflatable chamber of an inflatable chamber assembly is secured in a pocket that is comprised of an interior lining and an exterior casing. The exterior casing may be disposed atop a fill material. The fill material and inflatable chambers are inserted into the cavity created between the exterior casing and interior lining of the case. Valve stems for inflating and deflating the chambers will be disposed toward the top opening of the device case for ease of access during use. In one embodiment, a portion of the pocket does not comprise any inflatable chambers. This empty space defines a depression at a predetermined position and shape to accommodate the head of the user when the case is inflated and being used as a pillow.

Embodiments of the invention will appear evident as the description proceeds. To the accomplishment of the above and related objects, this invent on may be embodied in the form illustrated in the accompanying drawings, attention being called to the fact, however, that the drawings are illustrative only, and that changes may be made in the specific construction illustrated and described within the scope of the appended claims.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Embodiments of the present invention provide a electronic device case which, when in inflated, will may be used as a travel pillow aboard planes, boats, trains, and the like. Sized to fit the multitude of mobile electronic devices commonly found on the market, such as regular and large sized laptops, as well as tablet computing devices.

FIG. 1 illustrates an electronic device case with inflatable travel pillow 10 comprising a exterior cover 12 having a front surface 14, a rear surface 16 and a pair of opposing side edges 18. Within the exterior cover 12 are a plurality of interior chambers, each having at least two inflatable bladders received therein. An upper bladder (not shown in this figure) is annular with a cylindrical cross section for cradling a user's head when resting on the exterior cover 12.

As shown in FIG. 1, an electronic device case with inflatable travel pillow 10 may comprise a cloth, material, or fabric such as a velvet, microfiber, cloth, quilt or blanker, a pocket for storing a mobile electronic device such as a laptop or tablet computer, as shown in FIG. 2. The electronic device case 10 may be fabricated from any number of materials including, but not limited to, cotton, cotton blend, terry cloth, polyester, paper, plastic, or any other man-made or natural fiber or material depending on the required need of the user. The electronic device case 10 may also be made of a flame resistant and/or fire retardant material suitable for use in various environments including aircraft, boats, or other vehicles. Preferably, the electronic device case with inflatable travel pillow 10 is comprised of a soft foldable material sufficient to provide a user with comfort during use. Furthermore, device case 10 materials and composition preferably permit the case 10 to be easily and consistently folded into a compact shape for ease of storage aboard and airplane, train, boat or other means of transportation where space is of concern.

The interior pillow element (not shown in this figure) is preferably made of an air impermeable (inflatable) plastic material such as that used in inflatable plastic items such as will be discussed later.

In a number of embodiments, device case 10 has a fastener 32 which extends around at least one side of the device case 10, so that when the fastener 32 is closed, the contents of the device are secure within the case 10. The electronic device case with inflatable travel pillow 10 can fit one or more objects. As used herein, the term “fastener” means something that fastens. Non-limiting examples of fasteners include zippers, Velcro, buttons and corresponding button holes, and male and female snap buttons. In a number of embodiments, the fastener is a zipper.

One embodiment of the electronic device case with inflatable travel pillow 10 has a hook-and-loop fastener 20 on a front surface 14 for releasably engaging a mating fastener 22. A logo or other design element may be imprinted on the front surface of the mating fastener 22. The exterior surface of the mating fastener comprises a surface so that desired indicia such as a team logo, or designer emblem is exposed to the user. This feature is especially attractive to the retailers where marketing and advertising may increase the sales or revenues therefrom or to promote the services of the retailer or to provide industry specific advertising for sports teams or clothing manufacturers. Attaching the mating fastener using a hook-and-loop fastener, or similar releasably attaching means, also the user to interchange the indicia they have adorning their case 10. Accordingly, they may vary the indicia decorating their case 10 depending on mood or however else may suit their personal desires.

FIG. 2 illustrates an open perspective view of electronic device case with inflatable travel pillow 10. As illustrated here, the device case 10 has an interior surface 30 forming part of a pocket 40. The pocket 40 is preferably made by attaching an interior surface 30 to the exterior cover 12 by means such as, but not limited to, stitching along the sides of the exterior cover 12. At least one side is to remain open for receiving the mobile electronic device (nor shown) within the case 10.

As further illustrated in FIG. 2, each bladder may comprise a designated refill valve 24a and 24b with a protective cap 25a and 25b extending from the interior surface 30 of the electronic device case 10. Therefore, a user can inflate each bladder to a desired firmness by blowing air into the one of the designated refill valves.

This configuration allows for a wide range of firmness and shape configurations to be accomplished. For instance, the head support region 28 (see FIG. 1) could have the greatest firmness, with the opposite end or side portions of the case 10 having an intermediate firmness, for example.

FIG. 3 is a close up view of the valve assembly 26 for the electronic device case with inflatable travel pillow 10 according to the present invention. This figure illustrates where the valve stems are located in relation to the pocket 40 of the case 10. The valve assembly 26 is preferably located towards the outer edge 28 of the pocket 40 in order to facilitate expansion of the air chambers when the user is doing so using his or her own breath.

Furthermore, when the user desires to store the device case 10, the protective valve caps 25a and 25b are opened to permit the air to escape, whereby the case 10 may be flattened and rolled or folded into a very compact size, thereby making it convenient to store or to carry along when traveling. The valves assemblies 26 may also be pushed into a stored position flush with the interior surface 30 of the case when the valves are not in use, and may be pulled out to enable air to be blown through the valves or exhausted therefrom.

FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the electronic device case with inflatable travel pillow 10 according to the present invention with all of the air chambers inflated. This figure illustrates how An upper bladder (not shown in this figure) is annular with a cylindrical cross section for cradling a user's head when resting on the exterior cover 12. In this embodiment of the present invention, the device case 10 comprises an inflatable air chamber (not visible in this figure) of air impervious material, having recessed areas 50 to provide clearance for the face of a user lying on his or her side, and head support region 28 of increased thickness along the perimeter of at least on side of the device case 10 to provide support for neck of the user. The head support region 28, in addition to being thicker than the recessed area, may also be more firm than the remaining portion of the pillow, and to this end comprises a chamber separate from the chamber within the remainder of the device case 10. At least two separate inflation and deflation valves 24a and 24b are provided to the respective chambers. However, the inventor contemplates having a plurality of additional chambers each having their own valves in any number of configuration depending on the size and shape of the electronic device a particular case is designed to contain.

In use, the head support region 28 and the body of the rest of case 10 may be inflated to the same firmness, or the head support region 28 may be inflated to be more firm than the case 10, or the head support region 28 may be only partially inflated so that it is softer and even less thick than rest of the case 10.

FIGS. 5 and 6 depict the mobile electronic device case with inflatable travel pillow 10 in cross-section with and without a mobile electronic device contained therein, device cases 10 depicted here by way of example are shown comprising two independent air chamber elements 60 & 70. However, it should be understood that the inventor contemplates a number of different embodiments comprising various number of chamber elements that would not depart from the breadth and scope of the invention. For example, another embodiment comprise three chambers, all interconnected, which may be inflated using a single valve. While in another embodiment, the device case may comprise four different chamber elements each independent from the others and comprising their own individual valve, and so on and so forth. Therefore, it should be understood these figures are present by way of example and not limitation.

The interior pillow air chamber elements are preferably made of an air impermeable (inflatable) plastic material such as that used in inflatable plastic items such as can be formed from any sufficiently air impermeable material, preferably it is formed from a vinyl sheeting material, expanded vinyl, supported vinyl, neoprene compounds, polypropylene, polyethylene, polyesters, nylons, polyamides, rubber or rubber compounds.

As described above and illustrated in other figures, each chamber comprises a valve for permitting atmospheric air to be forced into the inflatable element chambers by conventional means such as a pump or by lung pressure. Each valve comprises a cap which allows the user to seal the inflatable chamber elements after inflation by threading the cap onto the air tube to shut off air communication between the inflatable element internal cavity and the atmosphere. Removal of the cap allows the user to bring the inflatable element internal cavity into communication with the atmosphere to deflate the pillow element for easier storage.

As illustrated in FIG. 6, where the device case 10 contains a mobile electronic device (in this case a laptop computer) 62. The unique positioning of the chamber elements 60 & 70 provides for adequate pocket space for storing a mobile electronic device even while the case 10 is being used as a travel pillow.

The case 10 is comprised of an inner layer 64 and an outer layer 66. Both the inner layer 64 and the outer layer 66 are responsible for sandwiching the inflatable chamber elements 60 & 70 inside of the case 10. It shall be further noted that the inner layer 64 and the outer layer 66 may be stitched or adhered together in order to secure the inflatable chamber elements 60 & 70 into the construction of the case 10.

The outer layer 66 is a fabric layer for the comfort of the user. The fabric can be any desired for the intended comfort of the user, but is preferably a durable, soft, water-absorbing material. Further, the outer layer 66 may also be comprised of soft, fibrous material may be used for improved comfort. This may be a soft material such as cotton, or rayon, velvet, microfiber or the like. Finally, the outer layer 66 may also be printed for decoration, for an indication of ownership, or for advertising.

For increased user comfort for while the device case 10 is being used as a travel pillow, the space between the inner layer 64 and an outer layer 66 may comprise a fill material 68. The fill material 68 may be one or a combination of any number of material commonly found in pillows including, but not limited to, cotton and down. In one embodiment, the fill material may comprise Memory Foam® or any other similar polyurethane viscoelastic material.

Additionally, the inventive mobile electronic device case with inflatable travel pillow 10 is not limited to the use of a single inflatable pillow where both the exterior cover 12 and recessed areas 50 have the shapes illustrated in the accompanying drawings. Likewise, the shape of the exterior cover 12 and recessed areas 50 may be any which is desired for the intended use (laptop case and tablet computer case for example) but which continues to operate in such a manner that are used in comfort as an inflatable travel pillow by a user of the present invention.

CONCLUSIONS, RAMIFICATIONS, AND SCOPE

While a particular form of the invention has been illustrated and described, it will be apparent that various modifications can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention. For example, electronic device case with inflatable travel pillow may be illustrated in a laptop embodiment even though the inventor contemplates the possibility that the apparatus may be modified to suit a variety of mobile electronic devices such as tablet computers all the while comprising the properties of the invention. Accordingly, is not intended that the invention be limited, except as by the appended claims.

The teachings provided herein can be applied to other systems, not necessarily the system described herein. The elements and acts of the various embodiments described above can be combined to provide further embodiments. All of the above patents and applications and other references, including any that may be listed in accompanying filing papers, are incorporated herein by reference. Aspects of the invention can be modified, if necessary, to employ the systems, functions, and concepts of the various references described above to provide yet further embodiments of the invention.

Particular terminology used when describing certain features or aspects of the invention should not be taken to imply that the terminology is being refined herein to be restricted to any specific characteristics, features, or aspects of the electronic device case with which that terminology is associated. In general, the terms used in the following claims should not be constructed to limit the electronic device case to the specific embodiments disclosed in the specification, unless the above description section explicitly define such terms. Accordingly, the actual scope encompasses not only the disclosed embodiments, but also all equivalent ways of practicing or implementing the disclosed electronic device case. The above description of embodiments of the electronic device case is not intended to be exhaustive or limited to the precise form disclosed above or to a particular field of usage. While specific embodiments of a electronic device case are described above for illustrative purposes, various equivalent modifications are possible which those skilled in the relevant art will recognize.

While certain aspects of the mobile electronic device case are presented below in particular claim forms, the inventors contemplate the various aspects of the electronic device case in any number of claim forms. Accordingly, the inventor reserves the right to add additional claims after filing the application to pursue such additional claim forms for other aspects of the electronic device case with inflatable travel pillow.

Claims

1. A carrying case for carrying mobile electronic devices including laptop computers and the like, the carrying case comprising a main packing compartment sized to receive and contain a laptop computer, the main packing compartment comprising a plurality of independently-inflatable chambers positioned therein for supporting a user's head and neck, encased within foam to act as a shock absorption device, said carrying case further comprising at least one air valve attached to at least one of said chamber to selectively regulate airflow into and out of the chamber.

2. The carrying case of claim 1 further comprising a zipper for selectively securing the contents of said case.

3. The carrying case of claim 1 wherein at least one of said chambers is a semi-circular inflatable bladder positioned for supporting a user's head when inflated.

4. The carrying case of claim 3 wherein the foam is comprised of ethylene vinyl acetate.

5. The carrying case of claim 3 wherein the foam is comprised of memory foam.

6. The carrying case of claim 3 wherein the chambers and the foam are sized to provide a substantially tight fit around the peripheral of the laptop computer carried therein.

7. A carrying case for carrying mobile electronic devices including tablet computers and the like, the carrying case comprising a main packing compartment sized to receive and contain a tablet computer, the main packing compartment comprising a plurality of independently-inflatable chambers positioned therein for supporting a user's head and neck, encased within foam to act as a shock absorption device, said carrying case further comprising at least one air valve attached to at least one of said chamber to selectively regulate airflow into and out of the chamber.

8. The carrying case of claim 7 further comprising a zipper for selectively securing the contents of said case.

9. The carrying case of claim 7 wherein at least one of said chambers is a semi-circular inflatable bladder positioned for supporting a user's head when inflated.

10. The carrying case of claim 9 wherein the foam is comprised of ethylene vinyl acetate.

11. The carrying case of claim 9 wherein the foam is comprised of memory foam.

12. The carrying case of claim 9 wherein the chambers and the foam are sized to provide a substantially tight fit around the peripheral of the laptop computer carried therein.
