The body has at least one attachment point proximal an outer perimeter of the body. The body further having (1) a deployed configuration wherein the body has a generally planar shape, and (2) a collapsed configuration wherein the body has one of (a) a generally rolled shape and (b) a generally folded shape. The apparatus further has one or more elongate members having a proximal first end for being attached to the collapsible base member body at one or more attachment points. The elongate member has a distal second end adapted for being forced by the user when the elongate member is attached to the base member.

FIELD OF THE INVENTIONThis invention relates to a portable exercise or rehabilitation apparatus.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONAn exercise or rehabilitation apparatus is configured to provide a user with a variety of muscle and joint exercises. Such an apparatus is especially of use for isotonic arm, shoulder, chest, torso, back, leg, and foot exercises.
A typical exercise apparatus has a stationary body and one or more weighted moveable or elastic members having a proximal end anchored to the body. Further, the typical exercise apparatus for performing the aforementioned exercises may have a variety of attachments for the distal end of the elastic member. Such attachments may be in the form of a hand grip, loop, foot stirrup, or appendage wrap. The typical exercise apparatus stationary body is bulky, rigid, and otherwise not transportable or adaptable to an environment of the user. It may be difficult for the user of such a typical rigid exercise apparatus to perform exercises with the apparatus in an office environment, in a car, or other environment that is not a gym.
The Applicant has invented a novel structure for a portable exercise apparatus, wherein the apparatus includes advantageous features not heretofore taught or contemplated by the prior art.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTIONIt is desirable to provide a portable exercise apparatus for efficient and convenient transportation and storage. Furthermore, it is desirable that a portable exercise apparatus be quickly adaptable to a variety of environments, such as an office chair, commuter train chair, car seat, couch, park bench, or closed-bottom seat, without alteration of such environments. It is preferable that such a portable exercise apparatus will motivate a user to exercise without the need of traveling to a designated workout location, such as a gym. Furthermore, it is preferable that such a portable exercise apparatus will allow a user to exercise during times when it is typically not possible to exercise, such as during transit, or during a work break. It is also preferable that the portable exercise apparatus is lightweight and simple to manufacture. The presently disclosed portable exercise apparatus satisfies one or more of these needs.
In one inventive form, a portable exercise apparatus is provided for enabling a user to perform one or more exercises. The apparatus has a collapsible base member with a body. The body has a lower surface and an upper surface, and the upper surface is adapted for receiving the user of the apparatus. The body has at least one attachment point proximal an outer perimeter of the body. The body has (1) a deployed configuration wherein the body has a generally planar shape, and (2) a collapsed configuration wherein the body has one of (a) a generally rolled shape and (b) a generally folded shape. The apparatus further has at least one elongate member having a proximal first end for being selectively attached to the collapsible seat member body at the at least one attachment point. The elongate member further has a distal second end that is adapted for being forced by the user of the apparatus when said elongate member is attached to said collapsible base member.
In another inventive form, a portable exercise apparatus is provided for enabling a user to perform one or more exercises. The apparatus has a base member having a body. The body has a lower surface and an upper surface adapted for receiving the user of the apparatus. The body has a plurality of attachment points proximal an outer perimeter of the body. The body having at least one reinforcing member extending from one of the plurality of attachment points to another of the plurality of attachment points through a geometric center of one of the upper and lower surfaces. The apparatus further having at least one elongate member having a proximal first end for being attached to the base member at one of the attachment points. The elongate member has a distal second end adapted for being forced by the user of the apparatus when the elongate member is attached to the base member.
Other objects, features, and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a review of the entire specification, including the appended claims and drawings.
In the illustrated preferred embodiment, the body 14 of the base member 12 is pliant or otherwise capable of being configured in a collapsed position as illustrated in

As shown in
In the illustrated preferred embodiment of the apparatus 10, the body 14 has six attachment points 20 for use with the elongate members 30 (
It will be appreciated that in the broadest concept of the present invention, the body 14 need only have one attachment point 20, and such attachment point 20 may be located anywhere on the body 14. Furthermore, the attachment point 20 need not be in the form of a D-ring type connector, and may be any type of conventional permanent or releasable connection.
