Peel and Stick Archery Vanes

A method of making easily removable and replaceable peel and stick archery vanes for attachment to archery arrows. Individual archery vanes are coated on the flat mounting surface of such vane with an adhesive coating. A layer of impermeable material which is removable, is then applied to the adhesive coating. When the layer of impermeable material is removed, this exposes the adhesive. The archery vane can then be attached to an arrow where there are missing or no archery vanes, by placing the adhesive coated flat mounting surface of the archery vane against the arrow shaft.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

1. Field of the Invention

The invention relates to removable and replaceable peel and stick archery vanes for attachment to archery arrows.

2. Description of Prior Art

Archery vanes have been generally permanently attached to arrows by permanent adhesives. When archery vanes become damaged, because of the permanent attachment, they cannot be removed and the arrow needs to be replaced. New vanes are attached through cumbersome and expensive jigs which are not easily used in the field.

There are various methods of mechanically attaching archery vanes, which may be removable using slots in the arrow, locking pins or other mechanical attachments. Such methods require heavy or expensive modifications or additions to the arrow, also affecting the balance of the arrow.

Accordingly, there is a need to provide replaceable vanes to attach to archery arrows which can be easily and quickly attached, including in the field without expensive jigs or relying on mechanical attachments which add weight, change the balance of the arrows and are more expensive.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

This invention provides for a method of attaching replacement vanes or fletching to arrows which is removable.

The vane may be composed of feathers or synthetic materials and are generally are of a thin and light construction. To the bottom flat mounting surface of the vane is attached an adhesive. To the outer surface of the adhesive furthest away from the flat mounting surface vane is attached a layer of removable impermeable material. This material layer lightly bonds to the adhesive.

The removable impermeable material layer is removed from the adhesive, exposing the adhesive to the air, this allows the adhesive to be applied to the surface of the arrow's shaft. The vane is then applied to the rear end of the arrow shaft parallel to the arrow shaft.

The adhesive may be a pressure sensitive adhesive, or may be an adhesive whereby when the impermeable material is removed, this exposes a solvent in the adhesive which evaporates activating the adhesive or other adhesive methods including chemical bonding adhesives.

Such adhesives may bond chemically, mechanically or with weak electrostatic forces.

The removable material layer may be either impermeable or permeable providing that the adhesive is not activated until the material layer is removed.

In the preferred embodiment, the vane may be removed after it is attached to the arrow shaft if it becomes damaged, by application of solvents, heat, force or other methods, removing such adhesive or breaking the bond of the adhesive and a new fletch or vane may be applied in place thereof.

The removable vane may be designed to match up with coloured strips on the arrow shafts having the same dimensions as the flat mounting surface of the vane, which are parallel to the arrow shaft on the rear of the arrow marking the location of the attachment of the vane to ensure that the vane is in fact parallel and the arrow flies properly after attachment of the vane.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

FIG. 1 is an arrow without any arrow vane attached to it and a separate arrow vane. Adhesive is attached to the flat mounting surface on the bottom of the vane and an impermeable material layer attached to the exposed surface of the adhesive to ensure that the adhesive is not exposed to and cannot attach to any other object.

FIG. 2 shows the impermeable material layer being removed exposing the adhesive on the flat mounting surface of the vane closest to the arrow prior to attachment.

FIG. 3 is the same arrow shaft with the vane now attached after the vane is applied to the arrow shaft and the adhesive exposed by the removal of the impermeable material layer bonding the vane to the arrow shaft.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT

In the preferred embodiment an adhesive is applied to the flat mounting surface of the archery vane. An impermeable material layer is placed over the exposed surface of the adhesive layer. The impermeable material layer only lightly adheres to the adhesive layer and is removable. The impermeable material layer protects the adhesive from being exposed and therefore adhering to other objects until the impermeable material layer is removed.

The impermeable material layer when peeled off or removed exposes the adhesive.

The vane or fletch is then attached to the arrow by pressing the adhesive layer on the flat mounting surface of the vane against the surface of the arrow at the rear of the arrow in a position which has been pre-marked on the arrow shaft parallel to the arrow shaft and by the bonding by the adhesive layer to the arrow shaft.

When damaged, the vane can be removed by breaking the bond between the vane and the arrow shaft or removal of the adhesive layer.

This bond may be broken by solvents, heat, or the application of force, or the adhesive layer removed by solvents, depending on the exact adhesive used.

Claims

1. A removable arrow vane for attachment to an arrow compromising:

a flat synthetic thin member which tapers from the greatest width being at the rear of the vane down to a point at the front of the vane with a flat mounting surface at the bottom of the vane;
an adhesive layer attached to the flat mounting surface of the vane;
which adhesive is attached to the arrow shaft by the application of pressure and bonds to the arrow shaft through the wetting by the adhesive of the surface of the arrow using weak electrostatic forces;
an impermeable material layer attached to the exposed surface area of the adhesive layer covering the entire area of the adhesive layer on the flat mounting surface, which impermeable material is removable exposing the adhesive and allowing for the attachment of the adhesive to the arrow vane;
an arrow shaft without vanes mounted on it, marked to show an area of attachment for the vane equal in size to the mounting area of the vane and parallel to the arrow shaft;

2. The removable arrow vane of claim 1 where the adhesive attaches mechanically, as it is expressed into the holes in the surface of the arrow shaft;

3. The removable vane of claim 1 where the material layer attaching to the adhesive layer is not impermeable;

4. The removable vane of claim 1 where the adhesive layer attaches chemically by chemical interaction with an adhesive layer attached to the arrow shaft;

5. The removable vane of claim 4 wherein the adhesive layer attached to the arrow shaft is covered by a removable impermeable material layer;

6. The removable vane of claim 1 wherein the adhesive layer may be removed by an application of a solvent when the arrow vane was damaged;

7. The removable vane of claim 1 where the vane may be removed by the application of heat, breaking the bond between the vane and the arrow;

8. The removable vane of claim 1 where the vane may be removed by the application of force, breaking the bond between the vane and the arrow;

9. The removable vane of claim 1 where the point of attachment of the vane is not marked on the arrow shaft.
