CROSS REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION

This application claims priority from Provisional Application Ser. No. 61/839,206 filed Jun. 25, 2013 by same inventor and entitled Multifunctional Decorative Pillow Blanket Body Cover, the teachings of which are incorporated herewith in their entirety by reference.

FIELD OF INVENTION

The present invention relates to a decorative pillow, and more particularly to a multifunctional detachable decorative system pillow that is convertible to a blanket, foot warmer, bed cover and body cover.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Pillows have existed throughout the centuries and were considered a symbol of a civilized society. The earliest pillows were made of stone block and wood, and were primarily used to keep the head from touching the ground where bugs and insects could climb into the mouth, nose, or ears. Especially prone to insects was the hair on the head. The emphasis was on protecting the head and not so much on comfort. It is believed that the Mesopotamian's were among the first to use pillows as far back 7000 years B.C. Pillows were even used with the Egyptian mummies as a means of properly positioning their heads. Pillows were also considered a form of affluence, the more pillows a person owned the more affluent they were perceived. As civilization continued to spread the Roman and Greek societies began to refine the makeup of pillows by making them softer and more affordable. Pillows were especially used to alleviate neck and back problems. Church members started bringing small soft pillows as they knelt down in prayer and sat on hard benches. During the Middle Ages King Henry VIII even banned the use of stone pillows except for pregnant woman. It wasn't until the industrial revolution that pillows really began to be made and used in mass quantity. The low cost of the textile materials and newly advanced techniques of mass production allowed pillows to be available to the masses.

A pillow is basically a large cushion support for the head or other parts of the body, usually used while sleeping on a bed, or for the body as used on a couch or chair. Pillows come in many different shapes but originally took the form of a rectangle or half moon. The rectangular shape was used for the placement of the head and the half moon for the cushioning of the body.

A typical rectangular pillow has a uniform thickness throughout. Internally, a pillow comprises filler material. As time progressed different materials such as foam, latex, cotton, sponges, synthetic plastic fibers, and feathers began being used as filler materials for pillows. Bed pillows were traditionally filled with straw, as better materials became available the use of straw faded. Feathers are the most expensive and usually the most comfortable; they offer the advantage of softness and their ability to conform to shapes desired by the user, more so than foam or fiber pillows. However one of the disadvantages of a feather-filled pillow is that a significant number of people are allergic to them. There are currently hypoallergenic varieties of pillows to allow people sensitive to enjoy the comfort of feather or down pillows.

There are many types of pillows and uses; bed pillows, furniture pillows, orthopedic pillows and decorative pillows. Orthopedic neck pillows support the neck by providing a deep area for the head to rest and a supportive area to keep the neck in alignment with the spine while sleeping. These are also known as cervical pillows their main purpose is to relieve lower back pain and to provide support. Pillows are even designed to accommodate people who like to sleep face down, face up or sideways, the relative height of the pillow is determined by the sleeping position. Emphasis is always placed on the comfort of the user. A newer type of pillow called a travel pillow is also used to provide support for the neck when sitting vertically for long periods of time. They are commonly used by passengers in airplanes and during long commutes by train or bus. The “U” shape fits around the back of the neck and keeps the head from slipping into an uncomfortable and possibly harmful position during sleep. However, U-shaped pillows can sometimes force the head forward creating neck stiffness. Another form of pillows are the donut pillows which are firm pillows shaped like a torus, with a space in the middle to alleviate pressure on the tailbone area while sitting. These pillows are used primarily by individuals who have suffered an injury to the tailbone area or who suffer pain from hemorrhoids or other ailments of the colon. Lumbar pillows are designed to support the inward curve of the lower back, filling the space created between the lower back and the back of the chair when in a sitting position. These pillows are generally used to support the lower back while driving or sitting, such as in an office chair. Orthopedic pillows are similar to another type of pillow made of Memory foam.

Memory foam is another material used in pillows that responds to changes in temperature. As the temperature increases, the memory foam realigns itself to provide a cushion; it tends to soften at the points where the body increases the temperature of the foam. When used as a pillow or mattress the foam molds itself to the contours of the human body. It provides quality support at different pressure points along the spine, and body. Thus reducing the stresses on the skeletal and muscle systems of the body that are incurred during sleep. When a person shifts positions on memory foam, the foam automatically realigns to maintain the cushion effect. The pressure is evenly distributed across the whole body. Reducing back strain.

Pillows serve multiple functions among them are for decorative purposes. Decorative pillows are usually custom made. They often have appealing covering material which serves to decorate their surroundings. When used to decorate a fully made up bed, the decorative pillows are often not used for sleeping. They are often placed aside at bedtime. Their purpose is for decoration; hence they fall under this category. They were often used by the affluent but as material cost decreased and availability increased it is accessible to the average consumer. Decorative pillows are also found on furnishings in more public parts of the home, such as sofas, chairs and window seats. They provide a pleasant view. Here, their common use may overlap both orthopedic and bed pillows. For example, unless a person has some particular medical condition, they will likely use a handy decorative pillow for lumbar support as needed, while seated on a sofa. Likewise, for the occasional nap, decorative pillows are handy for supporting the head or neck, even though they are not covered with a pillow case, as are bed pillows.

There are numerous names given to decorative pillows which are descriptive of their use and environment. Accent pillows which emphasize or accent some other part of the home decor. Sofa pillows and Couch pillows. Another term used is toss pillows, throw pillows and novelty pillows. Novelty pillows are shaped like animals, fruits, trees, or representation of other objects. Their purpose is to add interest to the environment. Pillows come in standard sizes and among them are Standard: (square) 16 in×16 in (41 cm×41 cm), Square: 26 in×26 in (66 cm×66 cm), Standard: 20 in×26 in (51 cm×66 cm), Queen: 20 in×30 in (51 cm×76 cm), King: 20 in×36 in (51 cm×91 cm). These pillow sizes are presented for illustration purposes but do not limit the scope of the invention.
