Women's Handbag or Purse

Abstract

The invention is a woman's handbag or purse. It is used for the purpose of carrying personal items such as lipstick, identification, cellphone, and keys. The handbag is rectangular in shape and fits comfortably in a woman's lap. It is designed to be lightweight and easy to carry. The handbag has a center, left, or right flap closure which allows the interior lining fabric to be seen. The lining fabric is fashionably coordinated with the exterior fabric to create a visually pleasing handbag. A magnetic snap is used to securely close the handbag and can be used in conjunction with a pendant accessory, button, or flower.

Description

The new design for a woman's handbag that I created, is rectangular in shape and sits comfortably in a woman's lap. It is lightweight and easy to carry. It was created to provide a stylish, fashion-forward option for those times when women don't want to carry the large, oversized handbags. The pocket storage area is large enough to hold essential items such as: cell phone, lipstick, identification and keys. The lining fabric is essential to the claimed design; yet not a particular fabric, it changes based on the color of the exterior fabric and is used to create an alluring visual effect of the claimed design.

The process of making this bag with center closure:

• 1. Start with an exterior fabric approx. 16 in length×14 in. width and interior lining fabric approx. 17 in.length×14 in. width. Place the fabrics together with the right side facing and sew them together leaving the side with the longer interior fabric open.
• 2. Turn the fabrics inside out and smooth out with your hands making sure that the corners are turned out. Measure a piece of board to match the size to the fabrics and insert it through the opening side, this will make the bag sturdy and firm.
• 3. Turn the bag so that the exterior is facing up. On the open side, fold the interior (lining) fabric once about ¼ inch then again covering the outer fabric. Be sure to pin it while you are folding it. This creates a border effect over the exterior fabric. Now sew it down and leave some of the thread once completed. This step is easily done by hand stitching. Pull the extra thread until the fabric begins to gather and scrunch together. Now turn it over again so that the interior lining if facing up.
• 4. Find the center of the bordered edge and using the directions for a magnetic snap, insert the bottom snap. Now measure the center point of the upper edge and insert the upper snap. Make sure that it will fold down directly to meet the bottom snap.
• 5. Continue sewing by hand. Fold the gathered side of the fabric up approx. 6 inches creating a pocket storage area, pin the sides down to the lining. Carefully, hand stitch them together. It would be wise to reinforce by double stitching.
• 6. Close the bag and press down along the folded edge to create a soft crease.

To make this bag with left closure:

• • 1. Start by measuring and cutting the fabric. Exterior fabric—19 in. long×14 in. wide. Interior lining fabric—20 in. long×14 inches wide. Place the two pieces together with the right sides facing each other and the tops corners together. From the bottom of the right corner, measure 14 inches up and make a marking (*). Cut at diagonal line from the top corner of the left side to the marking on the right.
  • 2. Sew around the sides and top of the bag leaving the bottom open. The interior fabric should be approx. 1 inch longer than the exterior fabric.
  • 3. Turn the fabrics inside out and smooth out with your hands making sure that the corners are turned out. Measure a piece of board to match the size to the fabrics and insert it through the opening side, this will make the bag sturdy and firm. Specifications cont.
  • 4. Turn the bag so that the exterior is facing up. On the open side, fold the interior (lining) fabric once about ¼ inch then again covering the outer fabric. Be sure to pin it while you are folding it. This creates a border effect over the exterior fabric. Now sew it down and leave some of the thread once completed. Turn it over again so that the interior lining is facing up.
  • 5. At the bottom left, insert the bottom part of the magnetic snap. Now insert the top part of the snap at the top left corner on the bag.
  • 6. Fold the gathered side of the fabric up approx. 6 inches creating a pocket storage area, pin the sides down to the lining. Carefully, hand stitch both sides of the pocket together. It would be wise to reinforce by double stitching.
  • 7. Close the bag and smooth along the folded edge to create a soft crease.

To make this bag with a right closure:

• • 1. Start by measuring and cutting the fabric. Exterior fabric—19 in. long×14 in. wide. Interior lining fabric—20 in. long×14 inches wide. Claims

1. A handbag comprising of: 1 exterior fabric and 1 interior lining fabric sewn together so that the insides are touching but folded so that the interior lining fabric can be seen from the outside; closed by an item such as a magnetic snap, or button, etc.

The handbag of claim 1 can be designed with a center, left or right diagonal closure. The outside of the bag can be adorned with a pendant accessory, flower or button in the center, left or right corner of the handbag.
