Because the flexible member 120 is made of sheet metal, the arm 122 has better elastic modulus. But the material of the flexible member 120 is not limited to the present invention. The directions to which the fixed portion 121 and the arm 122 extend form an angle, like a bend. When the tool-less mounting device 100 for HDD is in a normal and pressure-free situation (i.e. when it is not inserted into the HDD mounting bracket 200), the arm 122 of the flexible member 120 opens outwardly. When the tool-less mounting device 100 for HDD is inserting into the HDD mounting bracket 200 along a first direction, the arm 122 of the flexible member 120 gradually changes from opening outwardly to closing inwardly due to elastic deformation as it touches the sidewall of the HDD mounting bracket 200 and is gradually pressured in the process. The arm 122 of the flexible member 120 closes when it is inserted into the sidewall of the HDD mounting bracket 200. When the tool-less mounting device 100 for HDD is extracted from the HDD mounting bracket 200 along a second direction, the arm 122 of the flexible member 120 gradually changes from closing inwardly to opening outwardly due to elastic deformation, as it detaches and is gradually removed from the sidewall of the HDD mounting bracket 200.

When the tool-less mounting device 100 for HDD is inserted into the HDD mounting bracket 200 along the first direction, the second connector 132 of the backplane 130 is inserted in and coupled to a connector 210 of the circuit board of the HDD mounting bracket 200. When the tool-less mounting device 100 for HDD is extracted from the HDD mounting bracket 200 along the second direction, the second connector 132 of the backplane 130 is detached and uncoupled from the connector 210 of the circuit board of the HDD mounting bracket 200.
Note that in practice, the HDD 150 is first coupled to the first connector 131 of the backplane 130 inside the tool-less mounting device 100 for HDD, with the aligning hole on the HDD 150 to be doweled by the dowel pin 123 of the flexible member 120 installed corresponding to the aligning hole of the HDD 150, and completely fastened until the tool-less mounting device 100 for HDD is inserted into the HDD mounting bracket 200. In the present embodiment, the tool-less mounting device 100 has two HDDs 150. Therefore, two pairs of the flexible members 120 are installed facing each other to fasten the two HDDs 150 respectively. In other embodiments, when the tool-less mounting device 100 is installed with two or more HDDs 150, two or more pairs of the flexible members 120 are installed facing each other to fasten the two or more HDDs 150 respectively. Furthermore, a plurality of the flexible members 120 on the sidewalls 112 of the tray 110 are aligned to the same level to ensure that each HDD 150 fastened by each pair of flexible members 120 is at the same height.
Optionally, the tool-less mounting device 100 for HDD further comprises a turn-and-lock handle 141. An axis 143 of the turn-and-lock handle 141 is installed on a corner where a front side of the tray 110 and the sidewall 112 meet, and fastened to the bottom of the base 111 of the tray 110. When the tool-less mounting device 100 for HDD is inserted into the HDD mounting bracket 200, the turn-and-lock handle 141 turns from a first position (e.g. the direction the arm of the turn-and-lock handle 141 extends is approximately parallel to the direction the sidewall 112 extends) and locks at a second position (e.g. the direction the arm of the turn-and-lock handle 141 extends is approximately parallel to the direction the front side of the tray 110 extends). The function of the turn-and-lock handle 141 and the HDD mounting bracket 200 is to fasten the tool-less mounting device 100 for HDD. When the tool-less mounting device 100 for HDD is extracted from the HDD mounting bracket 200, the turn-and-lock handle 141 turns from the second position (e.g. the direction the arm of the turn-and-lock handle 141 extends is approximately parallel to the direction the front side of the tray 110 extends) and locks at the first position (e.g. the direction the arm of the turn-and-lock handle 141 extends is approximately parallel to the direction the sidewall 112 extends). The function of the turn-and-lock handle 141 and the HDD mounting bracket 200 is to unfasten the tool-less mounting device 100 for HDD. Furthermore, on the end opposite to the axis 143 of the turn-and-lock handle 141 is a thumbscrew 142. When the turn-and-lock handle 141 is at the second position, the thumbscrew 142 fastens the turn-and-lock handle 141 to the front side of the tray 110.
Optionally, the tool-less mounting device 100 for HDD further comprises a light-emitting diode 160, installed inside the front wall of the tray 110. The light-emitting diode 160 is coupled to the backplane 130 to show the status of the HDD 150.
When the arm 122 of the flexible member 120 is opening outwardly, the HDD 150 can be inserted into the first connector 131 of the backplane 130 along the first direction. Please refer to

The previous paragraph describes the procedure of installing the HDD 150 and the tool-less mounting device 100 for HDD. The removal of the HDD 150 and the tool-less mounting device 100 for HDD adopts the same procedure but with steps followed in reverse. First, loosen the thumbscrew 142 and the turn-and-lock handle 141, and turns the turn-and-lock handle 141 from the second position and locks at the first position. The function of the turn-and-lock handle 141 and the HDD mounting bracket 200 is to unfasten the tool-less mounting device 100 for HDD. Then, when the tool-less mounting device 100 for HDD is extracted from the HDD mounting bracket 200 along the second direction, the round portion 124 of the flexible member 120 ensures that the tool-less mounting device 100 for HDD slides smoothly out of the sidewall of the HDD mounting bracket 200. The arm 122 of the flexible member 120 changes from closing to gradual restoration of its shape due to elastic deformation, as it is detached from the sidewall of the HDD mounting bracket 200. The arm 122 of the flexible member 120 continues to open outwardly until it is removed from the sidewall of the HDD mounting bracket 200. The second connector 132 of the backplane 130 is disconnected and uncoupled from the connector 210 on the circuit board of the HDD mounting bracket 200. The dowel pin 123 of the flexible member 120 is removed from the aligning hole of the HDD 150, so to unfasten the HDD 150. After the tool-less mounting device 100 is completely removed from the HDD mounting bracket 200 and the arm 122 of the flexible member 120 opens outwardly, the HDD 150 can be removed from the first connector 131 of the backplane 130 along the second direction (e.g. to the left). Thus, the HDD 150 is uncoupled from the first connector 131 to be changed. The whole process of changing HDDs seems to be quick and easy, and not tool is needed.
The present invention is capable of realizing an automatic fastening of the HDD 150 on the backplane 130 when the tool-less mounting device 100 for HDD is inserted in the HDD mounting bracket 200, and an automatic unfastening of the HDD 150 when the tool-less mounting device 100 for HDD is extracted from the HDD mounting bracket 200. In addition, the tool-less mounting device 100 for HDD features tool-less installation which provides users with the maximum discretion when employing storage devices, and meets the goal of changing the HDD 150 quickly and conveniently.
While the present invention has been described in connection with what is considered the most practical and preferred embodiments, it is understood that this invention is not limited to the disclosed embodiments but is intended to cover various arrangements made without departing from the scope of the broadest interpretation of the appended claims.
