METHOD AND KIT FOR FORMING A WATER PIPE

A kit and method of forming an apparatus for smoking a combustible article comprising an upright container having an open top, operable to contain a liquid in a bottom portion thereof, the upright container having a hole bored through a sidewall thereof, a tube sized to be received within the hole and a sealing member sized to surround the tube within the hole so as to seal the tube within the hole.

Description
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

1. Field of Invention

The present invention relates to water pipes in general and in particular to a method and apparatus for forming a water pipe from a bottle.

2. Description of Related Art

In the field of combustible articles, users frequently inhale smoke produced by the combustion of the article for a variety of purposes. One such method which is commonly utilized to when the smoke is passed through a water pipe. Water pipes commonly are formed of an upright container having an open top and filled with a liquid such as water in the bottom portion thereof. Water pipes also commonly include a burner tube inserted into the container through the final there of having a basket at the top end of the tube for holding the combustible article.

In operation, the user place of the combustible article up on the basket and applies a flame thereto. Thereafter the user may draw air out of the open top of the container so as to draw replacement air into the container through the tube and therefore past the basket. This action draws the smoke from the combustible article through the water and into the container for inhalation by the user.

Due to the personalize nature of such water pipes, users frequently prefer to have unique and or customized water pipes which may express their own personal interests and likes. Disadvantageously, such customized or personalize water pipes may be expensive due to the need to have a level of skill at forming such water pipes.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

According to a first embodiment of the present invention there is disclosed an apparatus for smoking a combustible article comprising an upright container having an open top, operable to contain a liquid in a bottom portion thereof, the upright container having a hole bored through a sidewall thereof, a tube sized to be received within the hole and a sealing member sized to surround the tube within the hole so as to seal the tube within the hole.

The tube may pass through the sidewall at an downwardly declined angle into an interior of the container. The tube may contain a basket at a top free distal end thereof. The basket may contain a screen therein.

The sealing member may comprise an o-ring. The apparatus may further comprise drilling a vent hole in the container.

According to a further embodiment of the present invention there is disclosed a kit for forming a water pipe comprising an upright container having an open top, operable to contain a liquid in a bottom portion thereof and a drill bit operable to drill a hole through the container without damage thereto. The kit further comprises a tube sized to be received within the hole and a sealing member sized to sealably surround the tube within the hole so as to seal the tube within the hole.

The upright container may be formed of glass. The drill bit may comprise a diamond coated drill bit. The kit may further comprise a strip of tape operable to be applied to the container so as to prevent the container from breaking while drilling. The kit may further comprise an adhesive operable to secure the tube within the hole.

The tube may contain a basket at a top free distal end thereof. The basket may contain a screen therein. The sealing member may comprise an o-ring.

According to a further embodiment of the present invention there is disclosed a method for forming a water pipe comprising selecting an upright container having an open top, operable to contain a liquid in a bottom portion thereof and using a drill bit operable to drill a hole through the container without damage thereto, drilling a hole through a sidewall of the container. The method further comprises securing a sealing member within the hole and inserting a tube sized to be received within the hole.

The sealing member may be adhered to the hole with an adhesive. The method may further comprise drilling a vent hole in the container.

Other aspects and features of the present invention will become apparent to those ordinarily skilled in the art upon review of the following description of specific embodiments of the invention in conjunction with the accompanying figures.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Referring to FIGS. 1 and 2, an apparatus for smoking a combustible article according to a first embodiment of the invention is shown generally at 10. The apparatus 10 comprises a container 12 having an open top 14 and an inhalation tube 30 extending therefrom. The container may be of any type as selected by a user, such as by way of non-limiting example, a preferred beverage bottle as illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2. It will be appreciated that in this way a user may select and customize their water pipe to correspond to a glass bottle of a preferred beverage with-out requiring excessive skill or glass-working ability on the part of the user.

As illustrated, the container 12 comprises an upright container adapted to hold a liquid 8 therein having a liquid level 7 a top thereof. The liquid 8 may be of any suitable non-toxic type, such as by way of non-limiting example, water or the like. The container 12 comprises a sidewall 18 extending between a closed bottom 13 and an open top 14 having a bore 16 therethrough so as to maintain the interior of the container 12 in fluidic communication with the exterior thereof.

The container 12 includes a hole 20 bored through the sidewall 18 thereof and may also optionally include a vent hole 22 bored through the sidewall 18 on an opposite side thereof as illustrated in FIG. 1. The hole 20 is sized to sealably receive the tube 30 therethrough and is preferably oriented at a downward angle as illustrated in FIG. 1 so as to position the end of the tube into the liquid as will be further described below.

The tube 30 comprises an elongate tubular member extending between bottom and top ends, 32 and 34, respectively. The tube 30 is sized to be sealably received within the hole 20 with a sealing member 40 therebetween. The tube 30 is substantially hollow with an open passage extending therethrough and includes a basket portion 36 proximate to the top end 34 thereof. The basket 36 may be o-formed with the tube 30 or may optionally be formed of a separate member which is secured or otherwise attached to the tube. As illustrated in FIG. 2, the basket 36 may include a screen member 38 locatable therein to prevent the combustible material from entering the liquid 8. The tube 30 may be formed of any non-combustible material, such as by way of non-limiting example, copper, stainless steel or ceramics.

The seal 40 may comprise an o-ring sized to be located within the hole 20 around the tube 30. Optionally, the seal 40 may comprise a rubber or other compliant washer secured around the tube against the sidewall 18 of the container 12. In operation, the seal 40 may be secured or sealed between the tube 30 and the container 12 with an adhesive or the like.

As illustrated in FIG. 2, a kit may be provided for forming a water pipe as et out above from a container 12 of the user's choice. The kit may include the tube 30, seal 40 and a drill bit 50 selected to drill through a glass container without damage thereto. By way of non-limiting example the drill bit 50 may be a diamond coated drill bit as are commonly known. Optionally strips of tape 52 may be provided to surround the hole location so as to prevent damage to the glass of the container.

In operation, a user may select the container and apply tape to the container around the location of the desired hole. Thereafter the drill bit 50 may be utilized to drill the hole 20 and optional vent hole 22 in the sidewall 18 of the container 12. Preferably, the drill bit 50 will be oriented at an angle so that the tube 30 is angled into the liquid in the container 12. Water may also be utilized to lubricate the drilling process and constant pressure should be used so as to not damage the glass. After the hole has been formed, the seal 40 may adhered within or around the hole with adhesive and the tube 30 inserted therethrough and the screen 38 located within the basket 36. Once thus formed, a liquid such as water introduced into the container so as to cover the bottom end 32 of the tube for use by a user.

While specific embodiments of the invention have been described and illustrated, such embodiments should be considered illustrative of the invention only and not as limiting the invention as construed in accordance with the accompanying claims.

Claims

1. An apparatus for smoking a combustible article comprising:

an upright container having an open top, operable to contain a liquid in a bottom portion thereof, said upright container having a hole bored through a sidewall thereof;
a tube sized to be received within said hole; and
a sealing member sized to surround said tube within said hole so as to seal said tube within said hole.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said tube passes through said sidewall at an downwardly declined angle into an interior of said container.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said tube contains a basket at a top free distal end thereof.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein said basket contains a screen therein.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said sealing member comprises an o-ring.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising drilling a vent hole in said container.

7. A kit for forming a water pipe comprising:

an upright container having an open top, operable to contain a liquid in a bottom portion thereof;
a drill bit operable to drill a hole through said container without damage thereto;
a tube sized to be received within said hole; and
a sealing member sized to sealably surround said tube within said hole so as to seal the tube within said hole.

8. The kit of claim 7 wherein said upright container is formed of glass.

9. The kit of claim 7 wherein said drill bit comprises a diamond coated drill bit.

10. The kit of claim 7 further comprising a strip of tape operable to be applied to said container so as to prevent said container from breaking while drilling.

11. The kit of claim 7 further comprising an adhesive operable to secure said tube within said hole.

12. The kit of claim 7 wherein said tube contains a basket at a top free distal end thereof.

13. The kit of claim 12 wherein said basket contains a screen therein.

14. The kit of claim 7 wherein said sealing member comprises an o-ring.

15. A method for forming a water pipe comprising:

selecting an upright container having an open top, operable to contain a liquid in a bottom portion thereof;
using a drill bit operable to drill a hole through said container without damage thereto, drilling a hole through a sidewall of said container;
securing a sealing member within said hole; and
inserting a tube sized to be received within said hole.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein said sealing member is adhered to said hole with an adhesive.

17. The method of claim 15 further comprising drilling a vent hole in said container.
