Description
BACKGROUND Field of Invention

The present invention relates generally to sofas, and more specifically to a modular sofa made of compressible foam.

Related Art

Conventional modular sofa systems typically require screws or bracket assemblies in order to secure various modules together. For example, US publication number US20040021359A1 discloses a modular sofa requiring a bracket assembly for setup, U.S. Pat. No. 6,367,880B1 discloses a modular upholstered furniture construction requiring a bracket assembly for setup, and U.S. Pat. No. 5,630,644A a modular sofa assembly and mounting apparatus for securing independent sections thereof requiring a bracket assembly for setup. While these securing means are effective at preventing the modules from sliding apart when in use, they are not the easiest for a less handy user to assemble in-home.

The present invention discloses a modular sofa system made of a compressible foam for ease of transport which is easily assembled using a secure attachment mechanism.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

It is to be understood that the phraseology and terminology employed herein are for the purpose of the description and should not be regarded as limiting.

The present invention is directed to a modular sofa system, comprising of two or more main compressible foam modules and two or more main covers, each main cover for encasing one of the two or more main compressible foam modules. Each of the two or more main covers comprising an attachment mechanism comprising of two or more corresponding parts for removably attaching the two or more main compressible foam modules when encased in the two or more main covers.

These and other features of the present invention will become readily apparent upon further review of the specification and drawings.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Referring now to the figures where similar reference characters denote similar elements throughout the figures, FIGS. 1a and 1b show perspective views of different orientations of a compressible foam modular sofa system fully assembled, FIGS. 2a and 2b show perspective views of five and three unattached modules, respectively, encased in main covers, and FIG. 3 shows a perspective view of two unattached modules each with arm sections according to an embodiment of the present invention.

The present invention comprising of a compressible foam modular sofa system 100 comprising of two or more main compressible foam modules 102 and two or more corresponding main covers 104. The modular sofa system 100 being easily compressed for compact transport. In a preferred embodiment, the foam is a high resiliency open cell polyurethane foam but other types of foam which are easily compressible and are commonly known in the art may also be used. The modularity of the system allows for the arrangement of the modular sofa system 100 in different layouts for example, a longer sofa, a shorter sofa, a u-shaped sofa or an L-shaped sofa.

Each main cover 104 is adapted to encase one of the two or more main compressible foam modules 102. The main covers 104 may be made of any material commonly used in the art for sofa covers. The main covers 104 are adapted to provide structural integrity to the modular sofa system 100. Each of the main covers 104 comprising of an attachment mechanism 106, the attachment mechanism 106 comprising of two or more corresponding parts for removably attaching the two or more main compressible foam modules 102 when encased in the two or more main covers 104. The two or more corresponding parts of the attachment mechanism 106 dispersed among the main covers 104. For example, where the attachment mechanism 106 is a male and female type connector, one main cover 104 may possess the male side of the attachment mechanism 106 and another main cover may possess the female side of the attachment mechanism 106 such that those two main covers 104 may be removably connected via the attachment mechanism 106. The attachment mechanism 106 may include, but is not limited to, zippers, hook and loop fasteners, buttons, snap fasteners, magnets, or similar attachment means. The attachment mechanism 106 would not include screws or brackets or the like. The attachment mechanism 106 preferably located on either the edges of the face of the main covers 104, on the sides of the main covers 104, or both. The main covers 104 encase the compressible foam modules 102 via a closing means similar to that of the attachment mechanism 106. For example, the main covers may be closed using zips, hook and loop fasteners, buttons, snap fasteners, magnets or similar closing means.

Each main cover 104 comprises of at least a base section 112 and a back section 114. Some of the main covers 104 also comprise of an arm section 116 in order to correspond with the main foam modules 102 which may also comprise of an arm section 116. The present invention further comprising of one or more ancillary compressible foam modules 108 and one or more corresponding ancillary covers 110 for removably encasing the one or more ancillary compressible foam modules 108. These ancillary compressible foam modules 108 encased by the ancillary covers 110 are to be placed on and/or around the main compressible foam modules 102 for providing cushioning and comfort while in use. In some embodiments of the present invention the ancillary covers 110 comprise of an attachment mechanism for allowing the ancillary covers 110 to be attached to the main covers providing increased stability throughout the modular sofa system 100 when in use. In these embodiments, the ancillary cover 110 attaches to the main cover 104 via an attachment mechanism 106 located on a lower portion of the face of the back section 114 of the main cover 104.

The main covers further comprising of a support member 118. The support member for providing stability to the compressible modular sofa system 100 when in use. Since the foam is preferably a lightweight foam, the support member 118 provides stability to the sofa system 100 when a user is seated preventing the back of the sofa system 100 from unwanted reclining. Where a main cover 104 does not have an arm section 116, the support member 118 is preferably a triangle member permanently affixed to each of the left side and the right side of each main cover 104 between the base section 112 and the back section 114. Where a main cover has an arm section 116, the support member 118 is preferably a triangle member permanently affixed to the side of the main cover 104 opposite to the arm section and between the base section 112 and the back section 114. The support member 118 is made of a rigid material and preferably made of the same material as the corresponding main cover 104. The support member 118 may never be made of a material containing elastane or similar stretch material. While the support member is preferably a triangle member, the support member may also be a strip extending between the back section 114 and the base section 112 of a main cover 104. In another embodiment of the present invention the support member 118 further comprises of a plastic sheet to be positioned in the back section 114 of a main cover 104 in between the main cover 104 and the corresponding main compressible foam module 102. In one embodiment of the present invention where the main cover 104 has an arm section 116, the main cover does not have a support member 118.

The invention may also comprise of a main cover 104 with two arm sections 116 encasing a corresponding main compressible foam module 102. The invention may also comprise of a main cover 104 with a base section 112 and no back section 114 encasing a corresponding main compressible foam module 102. In an embodiment of the present invention the main cover 104 with two arm sections 116 encasing a corresponding main compressible foam module 102 may be removably attached via the attachment mechanism 106 to the main cover 104 with a base section 112 and no back section 114 encasing a corresponding main compressible foam module 102 to form a chaise lounge (not shown).

In an embodiment of the present invention the attachment mechanism 106 is located on the edges of the face of the base section 112. In another embodiment of the present invention, the attachment mechanism 106 is located on the edges of the face of the back section 114.

In an embodiment of the present invention the compressible foam modular sofa system 100 further comprises of one or more waterproof liners (not shown) for removably fitting over each foam module 102 and under each main cover 104. The water proof liners may also be removably fitted over each ancillary module 108 and under each corresponding ancillary cover 110. The water proof liner allows the modular sofa system 100 to be used both indoors and outdoors.
