CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION

This application claims the benefit of priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 62/823,361 filed Mar. 25, 2019, the disclosure of which is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety.

FIELD

The disclosed technology relates to an educational doll having feminine characteristics on one side and masculine characteristics on an opposite side.

BACKGROUND

Dolls have long been used not only as toys for play, but also as educational tools. Children often view dolls as a representation of themselves, which makes a doll a highly accessible means for communicating with a child, particularly with respect to complex issues or topics that are otherwise difficult to discuss in words.

One such topic relates to transgender identity, wherein a person identifies with a gender that is different from the sex assigned to that person at birth based on his/her physical traits. Hence, a transgender person may have both masculine physical features and feminine non-physical features or vice versa. For children who may be transgender or uncertain of their gender identity, understanding their feelings can be a stressful experience. Thus, there is a need for a comforting educational tool to help children address personal issues of gender identity.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

The accompanying drawings, which are incorporated herein and constitute part of this specification, are illustrative of particular embodiments of the present disclosure and do not limit the scope of the present disclosure. The drawings are intended for use in conjunction with the explanations in the following detailed description.

FIG. 1 shows a feminine front side of an example doll according to the present disclosure.

FIG. 2 shows a masculine front side of an example doll according to the present disclosure.

FIG. 3 is a side view of an example doll according to the present disclosure, and shows a portion of a feminine front side and a portion of a masculine front side.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The disclosed technology relates to a dual-gender doll having a body that includes at least a head, a torso, two arms (a first arm and a second arm), and two legs (a first leg and a second leg). The disclosed doll is humanoid—i.e., resembles a human, such as a human child. The doll includes two opposing front sides that are attached together such that the front sides face away from each other. In some embodiments, the front sides are not detachable. For example, the front sides may be sewn together (e.g., with thread suitable for use in manufacturing dolls), back to back, around the perimeter of the doll body. When sewn together, a seam may be positioned around a midpoint or plane of the doll body. In this aspect, a space is created inside the doll, which may be filled with suitable, compressible stuffing materials such as, but not limited to, synthetic fiber batting, cotton, straw, wood wool, plastic pellets, beans, or a combination thereof. In other embodiments, the front sides are detachably positioned back to back—e.g., via hook and loop fastener, magnets, etc.

In the disclosed dual-gender doll, one front side is feminine and the other front side is masculine. The feminine and masculine front sides are readily visually distinguishable from each other—e.g., the feminine front side being representative of a girl and the masculine front side being representative of a boy. The feminine front side has a plurality (at least 2, at least 3, at least 4, at least 5, etc.) of representative features that are traditionally associated with females (e.g., girls). Examples of feminine features that may be used in the context of the present disclosure include but are not limited to: eyelashes; clothing in the form of skirts and dresses, optionally adorned such as with ruffles and/or a rounded collar; high heeled shoes; hair accessories such as bows, barrettes, headbands, and decorative components of various shapes (e.g., hearts, flowers, butterflies, princesses, fairies, and the like); and features that comprise predominantly pink and/or purple colors (e.g., a pink blouse).

The masculine front side has a plurality (at least 2, at least 3, at least 4, at least 5, etc.) of representative features that are traditionally associated with males (e.g., boys). Examples of masculine features that may be used in the context of the present disclosure include but are not limited to: clothing in the form of pants, suspenders, collar, ties, bowties, suits, and blazers; work boots; and features that comprise predominantly blue and/or brown colors (e.g., blue pants).

Each front side of the doll includes a head. In some embodiments, the head is generally circular in shape and tapers to a neck portion. The neck portion of the head is directly attached to the torso as discussed below and shown in FIGS. 1-2. The head includes a hair portion on each of the feminine front side and the masculine front side. On the feminine front side, the hair portion may include a hair accessory component. On the masculine front side, the hair portion does not include a hair accessory component in some embodiments. The feminine hair portion and masculine hair portion may differ in visual appearance. For example, the feminine hair portion may be of a color or colors that are different from the color or colors of the masculine hair portion. In another example, the color of the hair portion on the feminine and masculine front sides may be the same or substantially the same, but the hairline above the eye features on the feminine front side may have a substantially different contour than the hairline above the eye features on the masculine front side. In some embodiments, the overall silhouette or outline of the feminine hair portion is the same as the overall silhouette or outline of the masculine hair portion so that only the feminine hair portion is visible when directly viewing the feminine front side of the doll (i.e., the front view), and only the masculine hair portion is visible when directly viewing the masculine front side of the doll. In this aspect, for example, the feminine hair portion could not include pigtails on the sides of the head because pigtails are traditionally associated with females, not males.

Each front side of the doll includes a head having a face comprising at least the features of two eye features, and a mouth feature arranged as a smile. The smile may be symmetrical or asymmetrical. In some embodiments, the face includes a nose feature provided, for example, in a general “C” shape or a mirror image of a “C” shape. In some embodiments, the face includes two cheeks provided, for example, as two circular dots that may be colored in a shade of pink or red on either side of the face. On the feminine front side, eyelash features extend from each eye feature. In some embodiments, each eye feature on the feminine front side includes a circular eye, eyelashes, and optionally an eyebrow. In some embodiments, each eye feature includes 2, 3, 4, 5, or more eyelashes extending therefrom. The eyelashes may extend directly from the eye or directly from the eyebrow, or may be spaced apart from the eye and optional eyebrow but still positioned in close vicinity to the eye and optional eyebrow. The eyebrow, when present, is positioned above the eye. On the masculine front side, no eyelash features extend from either eye feature. In some embodiments, the face (feminine and/or masculine) may include a feature of freckles provided, for example, as small dots or a cluster of small dots on one or both sides of the face.

In some embodiments, the shade of fabric or other material comprising any portion of the feminine front side of the face that is not covered by a component (e.g., hair portion, eye features, mouth, cheeks, freckles, etc.) is the same as the shade of fabric or other material comprising any portion of the masculine front side of the face that is not covered by a component. In this aspect, the doll provides the appearance of the same body underlying both the feminine and masculine sides of the doll.

In some embodiments, the shade of fabric or other material comprising any portion of the feminine front side of the arm that is not covered by a sleeve or representative sleeve is the same as the shade of fabric or other material comprising any portion of the masculine front side of the arm that is not covered by a sleeve or representative sleeve. In this aspect, the doll provides the appearance of the same body underlying both the feminine and masculine sides of the doll.

In some embodiments, the head includes two ears, one on either side of the head. In this aspect, each ear comprises a feminine side and a masculine side. The feminine and masculine ears may have the same visual appearance or a different visual appearance. In some embodiments, the ears comprise two opposing front sides that are attached together such that the front sides face away from each other. In other embodiments, the ears may comprise two opposing front sides of a single piece of material.

Each front side of the doll includes a torso having a top, a bottom, a left, and a right side, when viewed from the perspective of a user viewing a front face of the doll. In some embodiments, the uppermost plane of the torso is directly attached to the lowermost plane of the neck portion, which tapers from the head. The feminine torso includes one or more feminine features, such as those identified above. In one embodiment, the feminine torso is configured to include a dress (e.g., doll-sized clothing donned over the feminine front side of the torso of the body) or a representation of a dress (e.g., a torso of the body made from a feminine-patterned fabric). For example, the feminine torso may comprise a representation of a dress having one or more buttons that may be vertically aligned (e.g., pink, purple, red, white or other colored buttons) and/or a ruffled portion. In some embodiments, the feminine torso includes a collar. For example, the collar may be provided as two rounded (e.g., generally half-circular) portions positioned at the top of the torso, immediately adjacent the bottom of the tapered neck portion. In some embodiments, the overall silhouette or outline of the torso of the feminine front side is the same as the overall silhouette or outline of the torso of the masculine front side. For example, a dress provided on the feminine front side cannot not extend beyond the bottom plane of the torso. In this manner, only the masculine torso is visible when directly viewing the masculine front side of the doll (i.e., the front view).

The masculine torso includes one or more masculine features, such as those identified above. In one embodiment, the masculine torso is configured to include a shirt in combination with an upper portion of pants or shorts (e.g., doll-sized clothing donned over the masculine front side of the torso of the body) or a representation of a shirt in combination with an upper portion of pants or shorts (e.g., a torso of the body made from a masculine-patterned fabric). For example, the masculine torso may comprise a representation of a shirt (having a plaid pattern, for example) with suspenders and two vertically aligned buttons (e.g., white, brown, blue, or other colored buttons) in combination with a representation of an upper portion of pants (e.g., blue, black, brown, or other colored pants). In some embodiments, the masculine torso includes two suspenders extending substantially in parallel from the lowermost plane of the head to a middle plane of the torso, each suspender optionally terminating with a button. In some embodiments, the masculine torso includes a collar. For example, the collar may be provided as two triangular portions positioned at the top of the torso, immediately adjacent the bottom of the tapered neck portion.

The doll includes two arms extending from the torso, whereby a first arm extends from the first side of the torso, and a second arm extends from an opposing second side of the torso. Each arm is positioned at or adjacent an uppermost portion of the corresponding side of the torso. In some embodiments, each arm terminates with a rounded end, without a representative hand having fingers. In other embodiments, each arm terminates with a representative hand having fingers (e.g., 3, 4, or 5 fingers). In some embodiments, the arm comprises continuous front surfaces—i.e., without representative elbow and/or wrist joints. In some embodiments, each arm has substantially the same diameter from end to end.

Each arm comprises a feminine front side and a masculine front side, corresponding to the feminine and masculine front sides of the other portions of the doll. The feminine and masculine arms differ from each other in their visual appearances. In one embodiment, each side of the arm includes a portion of a sleeve or a representation of a portion of a sleeve, wherein the color or pattern of the dress matches or otherwise corresponds to the color or pattern of the corresponding side of the torso. A suitable sleeve may be long, short, or not present. In some embodiments, the masculine and feminine sleeves differ in length. In other embodiments, the masculine and feminine sleeves have the same length.

The doll includes two legs (a first leg and a second leg) extending substantially parallel from the bottom of the torso. In some embodiments, the first and second legs are centered at the bottom of the torso. In some embodiments, the legs are spaced apart from each other by a distance that is approximately equal to the width of one leg. In some embodiments, each leg terminates with a bulbous end. In other embodiments, each leg terminates with a representative foot having toes. In some embodiments, the leg comprises continuous front surfaces—i.e., without representative knee and/or ankle joints. In some embodiments, the diameter of the portion of the leg adjacent the torso is smaller than the diameter of the terminal portion of the leg, which may be representative of footwear. Each leg comprises a feminine front side and a masculine front side, corresponding to the feminine and masculine front sides of the other portions of the doll. The feminine and masculine legs differ from each other in their visual appearances. In one embodiment, each front side of the leg includes a portion of footwear or a representation of a portion of footwear. Suitable footwear may be long, short, or not present. In some embodiments, the masculine and feminine footwear portions differ in length. In other embodiments, the masculine and feminine footwear portions have the same length.

In some embodiments, the feminine leg has an upper portion and a lower portion (and optionally a middle portion). If the feminine leg has only an upper portion and a lower portion (and no middle portion), the lower portion of the feminine leg may have a longer length than that of the upper portion of the feminine leg. In other embodiments, each lower portion of the feminine leg constitutes about two-thirds or more of the total length of each feminine leg. In some embodiments, the masculine leg has an upper portion, a middle portion, and a lower portion. In some embodiments, the lower portion of the masculine leg has a longer length than that of either the upper portion or the middle portion of the masculine leg. In other embodiments, each lower portion of the masculine leg constitutes about two-thirds or more of the total length of each masculine leg.

In some embodiments, the overall silhouette or outline of each arm of the feminine front side is the same as the overall silhouette or outline of each arm of the masculine front side, and the overall silhouette or outline of each leg of the feminine front side is the same as the overall silhouette or outline of each leg of the masculine front side. In some embodiments, the shade of fabric or other material comprising any portion of the feminine front side that is not covered by a component (e.g., hair portion, eye features, mouth, cheeks, freckles, etc.) or by clothing or representative clothing is the same as the shade of fabric or other material comprising any portion of the masculine front side that is not covered by a component, clothing or representative clothing. In this aspect, the doll provides the appearance of the same body underlying both the feminine and masculine sides of the doll.

In some embodiments, the disclosed doll comprises materials that are soft and easily compressed (e.g., when squeezed by a child). To maintain its shape, the disclosed doll may be manufactured to include suitable stuffing materials such as, but not limited to, synthetic fiber batting, cotton, straw, wood wool, plastic pellets, beans, or a combination thereof. In some embodiments, when the arms of the doll are fully extended from the torso, the distance from the terminal end of the first arm to the terminal end of the second arm is about 5 inches to about 50 inches, such as about 9 inches to about 25 inches, or about 10 inches to about 12 inches. In some embodiments, when the legs of the doll are fully extended from the torso, the distance from the terminal ends of the legs to the uppermost end of the head (i.e., the full height of the doll) is about 6 inches to about 60 inches, such as about 9 inches to about 40 inches, about 11 inches to about 22 inches, or about 13 inches to about 17 inches. In some embodiments, the distance from a central portion (e.g., center point) of the outer surface of the feminine torso to a central portion (e.g., center point) of the outer surface of the masculine torso (i.e., the maximum width of the doll, as measured at the torso) is about 1 inch to about 12 inches, such as about 2 inches to about 10 inches, or about 3 inches to about 5 inches.

All features discussed herein (e.g., eyes, hair accessories, clothing, etc.) may be executed in any manner suitable in the manufacture of dolls. For example, a feature may comprise a separate component that is attached to the body, such as a button (e.g., plastic, metal, wood, etc.) sewn onto a fabric torso, a piece of felt cut in the shape of a hairline and sewn or applied with an adhesive to the head, or a piece of patterned cloth sewn or applied to the torso, arms, and/or legs in the form of clothing. A feature may also be applied directly to the fabric by printing, drawing, painting or other like means, such as eye features depicted as shaded black circles that are painted onto a face of the doll. A feature may also be provided by the choice of material or color of a body portion itself, such as legs that are configured to have two or more portions provided as two or more different materials or the same materials in two or more different colors and/or patterns. In such aspect, for example, a masculine leg may be provided in three portions of the same fabric material, wherein an upper portion is of a color or pattern corresponding to pants, a middle portion is of a color or pattern corresponding to skin tone, socks and/or shoes, and a lower portion is of a color or pattern corresponding to skin tone, socks and/or shoes.
