Multipurpose Bed Sheet System

A multipurpose bed sheet system is provided comprising a central bed sheet portion having a substantially rectangular shape with one or more bed sheet flaps extending from one or more edges thereof, where each bed sheet flap may comprise a substantially rectangular, substantially triangular or substantially isosceles-trapezoidal shape. One or more coupling elements may be disposed on each of the one or more bed sheet flaps or disposed on the central bed sheet portion, where each of the one or more coupling elements may be manually removable and manually reattachable with another of the one or more coupling elements. When at least one of the one or more coupling elements are each respectively manually attached with another of the one or more coupling elements, at least one of the one or more bed sheet flaps is secured to a side and a bottom of a mattress and a first end of the central bed sheet portion is secured to a top of the mattress.

CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Patent Application Ser. No. 62/832,953, entitled “HALF ELASTIC BEDSHEET,” filed Apr. 12, 2019. The contents of this application are hereby incorporated by reference in their entirety.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

In millions of residential and hospitality environments worldwide, bedding materials are utilized to furnish beds disposed therein. Such materials include fitted sheets which are snugly fitted around mattresses of the beds as well as flat sheets to be laid flat over the fitted sheet and to loosely overhang the sides of the mattresses. When replacing dirty fitted and flat sheets with clean fitted and flat sheets, a user must make the non-obvious distinction between fitted and flat sheets. Further, users of fitted sheets often find it difficult to fold fitted sheets after washing and drying of the fitted sheets. Additionally, initially furnishing beds with fitted and flat sheets typically requires the user to purchase multiple sets of both fitted and flat sheets, thereby increasing the cost of using such bedding materials as both types of sheets need to be manufactured. Moreover, the longevity of fitted sheets is often limited by the typical elastic material utilized to make the sheet fit snugly around the mattress. After many uses and cycles through washing and drying machines, the typical elastic deteriorates and renders the fitted sheet unusable, thus requiring purchasing of one or more additional sets of both the fitted sheet and flat sheet as both are typically sold together and cannot be easily purchased separately.

In home residential and professional hospitality environments, both time and monetary resources could be reduced in manufacturing, purchasing and using bedding materials if both types of sheets were not required to furnish a bed. It would be advantageous to utilize a single type of bed sheet that could function both as a fitted sheet and a flat sheet. Further, it would be advantageous to utilize a single type of bed sheet that could be reversible between a fitted sheet and a flat sheet. Additionally, it would be advantageous to allow the user to decide to what degree a sheet may be converted between a fitted sheet and a flat sheet. Moreover, it would be advantageous to provide a sheet that could function as a fitted sheet without the need to utilize standard elastic materials, thus increasing the longevity of use of the sheet and reducing the cost of using bedding materials generally.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

In some embodiments, a multipurpose bed sheet system comprising a central bed sheet portion having a substantially rectangular shape with one or more bed sheet flaps extending from one or more edges thereof, wherein each bed sheet flap comprises a substantially rectangular, substantially triangular or substantially isosceles-trapezoidal shape, and one or more coupling elements disposed on each of the one or more bed sheet flaps or disposed on the central bed sheet portion, wherein each of the one or more coupling elements are manually removable and manually reattachable with another of the one or more coupling elements, wherein when at least one of the one or more coupling elements are each respectively manually attached with another of the one or more coupling elements, at least one of the one or more bed sheet flaps is secured to a side and a bottom of a mattress and a first end of the central bed sheet portion is secured to a top of the mattress.

In some embodiments, the central bed sheet portion and the one or more bed sheet flaps are made from a first material.

In some embodiments, the central bed sheet portion and the one or more bed sheet flaps are structurally unitary.

In some embodiments, the first material may be cotton, polyester, nylon, rayon, lycra, spandex or elastane.

In some embodiments, the central bed sheet portion and the one or more bed sheet flaps are both made from a first material and a second material.

In some embodiments, the first material and the second material comprise one or more of cotton, polyester, nylon, rayon, lycra, spandex, elastane or any combinations thereof.

In some embodiments, the one or more coupling elements each comprises male or female coupling parts.

In some embodiments, a multipurpose bed sheet system, comprising: a central bed sheet portion having a substantially rectangular shape with one or more bed sheet flaps extending from one or more edges thereof, wherein each bed sheet flap comprises a substantially isosceles-trapezoidal shape having interior acute angles between 65 degrees and 85 degrees, and wherein the central bed sheet portion and the one or more bed sheet flaps are both made from a first material and a second material, wherein the first material and the second material comprise one or more of cotton, polyester, nylon, rayon, lycra, spandex, elastane or any combinations thereof, and one or more male or female coupling elements disposed on each of the one or more bed sheet flaps, wherein each of the one or more male or female coupling elements are manually removable and manually reattachable with another of the one or more male or female coupling elements, wherein when at least one of the one or more male or female coupling elements are each respectively manually attached with another of the one or more male or female coupling elements, at least one of the one or more bed sheet flaps is secured to a side and a bottom of a mattress and a first end of the central bed sheet portion is secured to a top of the mattress, and wherein when each of the one or more male or female coupling elements are respectively manually removed from another of the one or more male or female coupling elements, each of the one or more bed sheet flaps are not secured to a side and a bottom of a mattress and a first end of the central bed sheet portion is not secured to a top of the mattress.

Before describing the present invention in detail, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to any one of the particular embodiments, which of course may vary. It is also to be understood that the terminology used herein is for the purpose of describing particular embodiments only, and therefore is not necessarily intended to be limiting. As used in this specification and the appended claims, terms in the singular and the singular forms “a,” “an,” and “the” include plural referents unless the context clearly dictates otherwise. Thus, for example, reference to “a multipurpose bed sheet system” also includes a plurality of multipurpose bed sheet systems, and the like.

Exemplary embodiments of the present invention are illustrated in the accompanying figures. As shown in FIG. 1, a multipurpose bed sheet system 100 is provided in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention. The system 100 generally comprises a bed sheet 110 having a first portion 120, a second portion 130 and transition points 140 therebetween. The first portion 120 may comprise elastic or like material disposed around the outer edges of the sheet 110 for allowing the first portion 120 to be snugly secured to an edge of a mattress (not shown).

The second portion 130 does not comprise any elastic or like material but rather is designed to lay flat upon the mattress and hang over the edges thereof. Between the first portion 120 and the second portion 130 are disposed transition points 140 where the elastic or like material of the first portion 120 terminates and transitions into the second portion 130 having no elastic or like material. At the transition points 140 the outer edges of the sheet begin to taper outward, thus allowing for a greater width dimension of the sheet 110 towards the second portion 130 which allows the sheet 110 to overhang the mattress.

Advantageously, the first portion 120 is designed to be snugly secured to an edge of the mattress, thus providing a user (not shown) of the mattress the comfort of having their feet snugly covered by the first portion 120 of the sheet 110 throughout the night. Further, the second portion 130 is designed to lay loosely upon the user allowing the user to move in an unobstructed manner while covered by the sheet 110. Therefore, the problem of the user's feet becoming uncovered (and therefore cold) by movement of the sheet during the night is solved without restricting movement of the user.

The elastic of the first portion 120 may be substituted for any suitable like materials including, but not limited to, nylon, spandex, rubber bands, rubber belts, bungee chord, thread, string, yarn, spider wire, fishing line, carbon fiber string, fiberglass string, microfiber string or any combination thereof and may be utilized with any suitable number of apertures including eyelets disposed parallel to the planar sheet 110, conduits running along the perimeter of the sheet 110 and the like. Additionally, the sheet 110 may be made from any suitable material including, but not limited to, cotton, polyester, nylon, rayon, lycra, spandex, elastane or any combination thereof. Multiple materials may be utilized to produce the sheet 110 in order to provide the desired amount of skin-contact comfort and functional elasticity. Further, the sheet 110 may have any desired thread count, dimensions and color.

As shown in FIG. 2A, a side view of the multipurpose bed sheet system 100 in use on a mattress 150 is portrayed in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention. The first portion 120 of the bed sheet 110 is snugly secured around one end of the mattress 150 as a fitted sheet. The bed sheet 110 transitions from a fitted sheet to a flat sheet at the transition point 140 where the elastic or like material of the first portion 120 terminates and the second portion 130 of the sheet 110 begins to taper outward into the dimensional width of a flat sheet to allow the second portion 130 of the sheet 110 to overhang the mattress 150.

As shown in FIG. 2B, a bottom view of the multipurpose bed sheet system 100 in use on the mattress 150 is portrayed in a manner similar to that of FIG. 2A. The first portion 120 of the bed sheet 110 allows a user's lower half torso to remain covered by the bed sheet 110 due to the elastic or like material snugly securing the first portion 120 of the sheet 110 to the mattress 150. Further, the second portion 130 of the sheet 110 loosely lays upon the mattress 150 to allow the user's upper half torso to freely move underneath the sheet 110 and to allow the user to easily enter and exit the mattress 150.

In alternative embodiments, the bed sheet 110 may comprise elastic or like material disposed in segmented portions between two or more corners of the bed sheet 110 and each corner may have one or more means of separability which may take any suitable form including, but not limited to, zippers, buttons, snaps, clasps, clips, hooks, buckles, twist ties, draw straps, jockey straps, zip ties, hook and loop fasteners, magnets, eyelets, strings and any combination thereof. Each segmented portion of elastic or like material may have any suitable length between each corner of the sheet 110.

As shown in FIG. 3A, a bottom view of a multipurpose bed sheet system 300 in an uncoupled configuration on a mattress 340 is portrayed in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention. The system 300 comprises a bed sheet 310 having four flaps 310a-310d extending from the sheet 310 and overhanging the mattress 340. The flaps 310a-310d are shaped such that when they fall flat to the sides of the mattress 340, they are disposed adjacent relative one another. In one embodiment, the flaps 310a-310d may be shaped substantially as isosceles trapezoids with any suitable acute angles ranging between 90 degrees and 45 degrees, but preferably between 85 degrees and 65 degrees and more preferably between 85 degrees and 75 degrees. Further, while four flaps 310a-310d are illustrated in FIG. 3A, any number of flaps may be utilized with the sheet 310 including one, two, three, four or more flaps.

As shown in FIG. 3A, at least one male coupling element 320 or at least one female coupling element 330 may be disposed at the corners of each of the flaps 310a-310d. When the flaps 310a-310d fall flat to the sides of the mattress 340 the male coupling elements 320a-320d may be removably coupled to the female coupling elements 330a-330d, respectively. The substantially isosceles trapezoidal shape of the flaps 310a-310d allow for the sheet 310 to be pulled taut around the mattress 340 when the male and female coupling elements 320a-320d are coupled together around the mattress 340. However, the flaps 310a-310d may any suitable shape including, but not limited to, rectangular, trapezoidal, triangular or any combinations thereof. The flaps 310a-310d preferably cover substantially the entirety of the sides of the mattress 340 while being long enough to be disposed adjacent and/or overlapping one another underneath the mattress 340.

Advantageously, a user of the sheet 310 may selectively couple a desired number of the male and female coupling elements 320, 330 together to convert the sheet 310 between a fitted sheet and a flat sheet. Further, when in use as a flat sheet, the user may only couple male coupling elements 320a and 320d with female coupling elements 330a and 330d to allow the user's lower half torso to remain covered by the bed sheet 310 due to the male coupling elements 320a and 320d and female coupling elements 330a and 330d snugly securing a first end of the sheet 310 to the mattress 340. Further, the user may leave uncoupled male coupling elements 320b and 320c and female coupling elements 330b and 330c so that a second end of the sheet 310 loosely lays upon the mattress 340 to allow the user's upper half torso to freely move underneath the sheet 310 and to allow the user to easily enter and exit the mattress 340.

As shown in FIG. 3B, a detailed view of a coupling mechanism of a multipurpose bed sheet system 300 is portrayed in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention. The coupling mechanism may comprise one or more male coupling elements 320 removably coupling with one or more female coupling elements 330. Instead of mechanically mating male and female coupling elements 320, 330, the means of removably coupling the corners of the sheet 310 may take any suitable form including, but not limited to, zippers, buttons, snaps, clasps, clips, hooks, buckles, twist ties, draw straps, jockey straps, zip ties, hook and loop fasteners, magnets, eyelets, strings and any combination thereof.

Additionally, the entirety of the sheet 310 may comprise a substantially stretchable woven material including, but not limited to, cotton, polyester, nylon, rayon, lycra, spandex, elastane or any combination thereof. Therefore, with the flaps 310a-310d having a substantially isosceles trapezoidal shape, the substantially stretchable material allows the sheet 310 to maintain taut coverage around all sides of the mattress 340 when the coupling elements 320, 330 are removably coupled together. Specifically, the isosceles trapezoidal shape of the flaps 310a-310d may not physically overlap when loosely laid flat over the top, sides and bottom of the mattress 340.

However, when the flaps 310a-310d are stretched to overlap and the coupling elements 320, 330 are removably coupled together, the sheet 310 is pulled taut around the top, sides and bottom of the mattress 340, thus preventing it from coming off of the mattress 340 during use as a fitted sheet. Moreover, when the coupling elements 320, 330 are not coupled together, the flaps 310a-310d of the sheet 310 fall loosely to the sides of the mattress 340 and the sheet 310 is allowed to freely move over the mattress 340 during use as a flat sheet. Similarly, as shown in FIG. 3A, when the user only couples male coupling elements 320a and 320d together with female coupling elements 330a and 330d but leaves male coupling elements 320b and 320c uncoupled relative female coupling elements 330b and 330c, the first end of the sheet 310 is secured taut around a first end of the mattress 340 but the second end of the sheet 310 loosely lays upon a second end of the mattress 340, thus allowing the user to use the sheet 310 as a half fitted half flat sheet by snugly covering the user's bottom half torso while allowing the user's upper half torso to freely move underneath the sheet 310 so that the user may easily enter and exit the mattress 340.

As shown in FIG. 4, a bottom view of the multipurpose bed sheet system 300 in a coupled configuration on the mattress 340 is portrayed in accordance with some embodiments of the present invention. The coupled configuration may comprise the flaps 310a-310d of the sheet 310 laying flat against the sides and bottom of the mattress 340 such that male coupling elements 320a-320d are coupled with female coupling elements 330a-330d. FIG. 4 shows the flaps 310a-310d having substantially isosceles trapezoidal shape. However, the flaps 310a-310d may any suitable shape including, but not limited to, rectangular, trapezoidal, triangular or any combinations thereof.

Additionally, instead of mechanically mating male coupling elements 320a-320d and female coupling elements 330a-330d, the means of removably coupling the corners of the sheet 310 may take any suitable form including, but not limited to, zippers, buttons, snaps, clasps, clips, hooks, buckles, twist ties, draw straps, jockey straps, zip ties, hook and loop fasteners, magnets, eyelets, strings and any combination thereof. Further, the entirety of the sheet 310 may comprise a substantially stretchable woven material including, but not limited to, cotton, polyester, nylon, rayon, lycra, spandex, elastane or any combination thereof.

The specification and drawings are to be regarded in an illustrative rather than a restrictive sense. However, it will be evident that various modifications and changes may be made thereunto without departing from the broader spirit and scope of the invention as set forth in the claims. Other variations are within the spirit of the present disclosure. Thus, while the disclosed techniques are susceptible to various modifications and alternative constructions, certain illustrated embodiments thereof are shown in the drawings and have been described above in detail. It should be understood, however, that there is no intention to limit the invention to the specific form or forms disclosed, but on the contrary, the intention is to cover all modifications, alternative constructions, and equivalents falling within the spirit and scope of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.

The use of the terms “a,” “an,” “the,” and similar referents in the context of describing the disclosed embodiments (especially in the context of the following claims) are to be construed to cover both the singular and the plural, unless otherwise indicated or clearly contradicted by context. Claims

1. A multipurpose bed sheet system, comprising:

a central bed sheet portion having a substantially rectangular shape with one or more bed sheet flaps extending from one or more edges thereof, wherein each bed sheet flap comprises a substantially rectangular, substantially triangular or substantially isosceles-trapezoidal shape; and
one or more coupling elements disposed on each of the one or more bed sheet flaps or disposed on the central bed sheet portion, wherein each of the one or more coupling elements are manually removable and manually reattachable with another of the one or more coupling elements, wherein when at least one of the one or more coupling elements are each respectively manually attached with another of the one or more coupling elements, at least one of the one or more bed sheet flaps is secured to a side and a bottom of a mattress and a first end of the central bed sheet portion is secured to a top of the mattress.

2. The multipurpose bed sheet system of claim 1, wherein the central bed sheet portion and the one or more bed sheet flaps are made from a first material.

3. The multipurpose bed sheet system of claim 2, wherein the central bed sheet portion and the one or more bed sheet flaps are structurally unitary.

4. The multipurpose bed sheet system of claim 2, wherein the first material may be cotton, polyester, nylon, rayon, lycra, spandex or elastane.

5. The multipurpose bed sheet system of claim 1, wherein the central bed sheet portion and the one or more bed sheet flaps are both made from a first material and a second material.

6. The multipurpose bed sheet system of claim 5, wherein the first material and the second material comprise one or more of cotton, polyester, nylon, rayon, lycra, spandex, elastane or any combinations thereof.

7. The multipurpose bed sheet system of claim 1, wherein the one or more coupling elements each comprises male or female coupling parts.

8. The multipurpose bed sheet system of claim 1, wherein each of the one or more coupling elements comprises one or more zippers, buttons, snaps, clasps, clips, hooks, buckles, twist ties, draw straps, jockey straps, zip ties, hook and loop fasteners, magnets, eyelets, strings or any combination thereof.

9. The multipurpose bed sheet system of claim 1, wherein each bed sheet flap comprises a substantially isosceles-trapezoidal shape.

10. The multipurpose bed sheet system of claim 9, wherein the substantially isosceles-trapezoidal shape comprises interior acute angles between 45 degrees and 90 degrees.

11. The multipurpose bed sheet system of claim 9, wherein the substantially isosceles-trapezoidal shape comprises interior acute angles between 65 degrees and 85 degrees.

12. The multipurpose bed sheet system of claim 9, wherein the substantially isosceles-trapezoidal shape comprises interior acute angles between 75 degrees and 80 degrees.

13. A multipurpose bed sheet system, comprising:

a central bed sheet portion having a substantially rectangular shape with one or more bed sheet flaps extending from one or more edges thereof, wherein each bed sheet flap comprises a substantially isosceles-trapezoidal shape; and
one or more male or female coupling elements disposed on each of the one or more bed sheet flaps, wherein each of the one or more male or female coupling elements are manually removable and manually reattachable with another of the one or more male or female coupling elements, wherein when at least one of the one or more male or female coupling elements are each respectively manually attached with another of the one or more male or female coupling elements, at least one of the one or more bed sheet flaps is secured to a side and a bottom of a mattress and a first end of the central bed sheet portion is secured to a top of the mattress, and wherein when each of the one or more male or female coupling elements are respectively manually removed from another of the one or more male or female coupling elements, each of the one or more bed sheet flaps are not secured to a side and a bottom of a mattress and a first end of the central bed sheet portion is not secured to a top of the mattress.

14. The multipurpose bed sheet system of claim 13, wherein the substantially isosceles-trapezoidal shape comprises interior acute angles between 45 degrees and 90 degrees.

15. The multipurpose bed sheet system of claim 13, wherein the substantially isosceles-trapezoidal shape comprises interior acute angles between 65 degrees and 85 degrees.

16. The multipurpose bed sheet system of claim 13, wherein the substantially isosceles-trapezoidal shape comprises interior acute angles between 75 degrees and 80 degrees.

17. The multipurpose bed sheet system of claim 13, wherein each of the one or more coupling elements comprises one or more zippers, buttons, snaps, clasps, clips, hooks, buckles, twist ties, draw straps, jockey straps, zip ties, hook and loop fasteners, magnets, eyelets, strings or any combination thereof.

18. The multipurpose bed sheet system of claim 13, wherein the central bed sheet portion and the one or more bed sheet flaps are both made from a first material and a second material.

19. The multipurpose bed sheet system of claim 18, wherein the first material and the second material comprise one or more of cotton, polyester, nylon, rayon, lycra, spandex, elastane or any combinations thereof.

20. A multipurpose bed sheet system, comprising:

a central bed sheet portion having a substantially rectangular shape with one or more bed sheet flaps extending from one or more edges thereof, wherein each bed sheet flap comprises a substantially isosceles-trapezoidal shape having interior acute angles between 65 degrees and 85 degrees, and wherein the central bed sheet portion and the one or more bed sheet flaps are both made from a first material and a second material, wherein the first material and the second material comprise one or more of cotton, polyester, nylon, rayon, lycra, spandex, elastane or any combinations thereof; and
one or more male or female coupling elements disposed on each of the one or more bed sheet flaps, wherein each of the one or more male or female coupling elements are manually removable and manually reattachable with another of the one or more male or female coupling elements, wherein when at least one of the one or more male or female coupling elements are each respectively manually attached with another of the one or more male or female coupling elements, at least one of the one or more bed sheet flaps is secured to a side and a bottom of a mattress and a first end of the central bed sheet portion is secured to a top of the mattress, and wherein when each of the one or more male or female coupling elements are respectively manually removed from another of the one or more male or female coupling elements, each of the one or more bed sheet flaps are not secured to a side and a bottom of a mattress and a first end of the central bed sheet portion is not secured to a top of the mattress.
