BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

Standard mattress designs have evolved very little in the past decades. A standard mattress generally includes a core and a top layer disposed on the top surface of the core. The top layer forms a support surface for supporting at least one person thereon. Mattresses are commercially available for purchase in varying degrees of firmness. A purchaser can select to buy a mattress having soft, medium, or firm support. However, after purchase, the purchaser is typically unable to adjust the firmness of the mattress. It is also difficult to return the mattress due to its size and weight. Therefore, should the purchaser be dissatisfied with either the feel or support of the mattress, the purchaser has no option but to endure the unpleasant characteristics of the mattress or try to sell it. Since mattresses are expensive, these are not optimum options. Even though advance mattresses that can electrically or pneumatically adjust the firmness are available to consumers, these advance mattress are highly expensive generally not affordable majority of the consumers. Moreover, a mattress is an important purchase and is intended to provide the user with a sleeping surface that can last for years. However, like any piece of furniture, a mattress during normal use, may be exposed to a substantial amount of wear, as well as to accidental spillage that can stain and/or degrade the top layer and/or the core of the mattress. Existing mattress designs do not allow users to exchange or replace the top layer, and thus users are forced to dispose of the entire mattress.

The present invention aims to solve some of these problems by disclosing a mattress with a customizable top layer, which allows users to customize the mattress to their individual comfort level. Due to the configuration, the customizable top layer provide an affordable, simple, and easy solution to the adjusting the firmness of the mattress.
