DETAILED DESCRIPTION

The following detailed description of embodiments includes references to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of the detailed description. Approaches described in this section are not prior art to the claims and are not admitted to be prior art by inclusion in this section. The drawings show illustrations in accordance with example embodiments. These example embodiments, which are also referred to herein as “examples,” are described in enough detail to enable those skilled in the art to practice the present subject matter. The embodiments can be combined, other embodiments can be utilized, or structural, logical, and operational changes can be made without departing from the scope of what is claimed. The following detailed description is, therefore, not to be taken in a limiting sense, and the scope is defined by the appended claims and their equivalents.

According to an example embodiment, a face mask with a mouth piece is provided. The face mask may include a mask base having an aperture in its middle portion. The mask base may include two outer layers, specifically, a first outer layer and a second outer layer. The mask base may further include one or more inner layers placed between the first outer layer and the second outer layer. The face mask may further include one or more fastening elements attached to the mask base, such as Velcro elements. The face mask may further have two earpieces attached to the mask base.

The face mask may further include the mouth piece. The mouth piece may include two external layers, specifically, a first external layer and a second external layer. The mouth piece may further include one or more internal layers placed between the first external layer and the second external layer. The mouth piece may have one or more fastening elements, such as Velcro elements, attached to the mouth piece.

The mouth piece may be configured to connect to the mask base. Specifically, the fastening elements attached to one surface of the mouth piece may be configured to connect to fastening elements of the mask base. When connected to the mask base, the mouth piece may cover the aperture in the mask base. When the mouth piece is detached from the mask base, the aperture in the mask base can be opened to allow drinking, eating, and smoking while the mask is still worn by a user.

Therefore, the user would not need to take off the face mask completely, but only to detach the mouth piece from the mask base. When the mouth piece is detached from the mask base, the user may still have their nose covered with the mask face and thus protected from exhaling viruses. Furthermore, the mouth piece can be detached only by pulling the mouth piece itself without the need for the user to touch the mask base. Thus, the user can avoid contaminating the mask base that covers their nose and filters the air entering the nose.

The face mask may further have two secure bands placed between the first outer layer and the second outer layer of the mask base. A first secure band may secure a portion above the aperture of the mask base, and a second secure band may secure a portion below the aperture of the mask base. Therefore, when the mouth piece is detached from the mask base, the secure bands press the mask base tightly onto the face and protect the nose from inhaling the unfiltered air.

In an example embodiment, one edge of the mouth piece may be permanently attached to the mask base. The other edge of the mouth piece may have fastening elements attachable to the fastening elements of the mask base. When a user wishes to consume food or beverages, the user can detach one edge of the mouth piece from the face mask. Upon detaching one edge, the other edge of the mouth piece remains connected to the mask base. Therefore, the user would not lose the mouth piece. The face mask with a partially attached mouth piece can be used by children if their parents are concerned with the children losing their mouth piece.

The face mask may further include a nose bridge placed inside the mask base between the first outer layer and the second outer layer. The nose bridge can be used to accommodate glasses in order to repel moisture exhaled by the user from the glasses and to protect the glasses from fogging up.

In an example embodiment, the face mask can be used by hearing-impaired people. In this embodiment, the two external layers and the one or more internal layers of the mouth piece can be made of a transparent material to help the hearing-impaired people see mouth articulation and better understand the speaker.

In some example embodiments, the face mask is disposable. Materials used for single-use face masks may include polyester, polypropylene, polyethylene, polycarbonate, and any other materials applicable for single use. In other example embodiments, the face mask is reusable. Materials used for reusable face masks may include hand- and/or machine-washable materials, such as fabrics, cotton, cotton blends, polymers, and so forth.

Referring now to the drawings, FIG. 1 shows a front perspective view 100 of a face mask 101, according to an example embodiment. The face mask 101 may include a mask base 105 and a mouth piece 135. The mask base 105 may have an aperture 110 positioned approximately in the middle of the mask base 105. The mask base 105 may include two outer layers 115, specifically, a first outer layer 116 and a second outer layer 117. The mask base 105 may further include one or more inner layers 120 disposed between the first outer layer 116 and the second outer layer 117.

The first outer layer 116, the one or more inner layers 120, and the second outer layer 117 may be joined together by means of sewing, stitching, sealing, gluing, and any other joining techniques. For example, the one or more inner layers 120 may be placed onto the first outer layer 116, and the second outer layer 117 may be placed onto the one or more inner layers 120. This multilayer structure may be stitched together. For example, the stitching can be carried out along the perimeter of the multilayer structure of the mask base 105.

The face mask 101 may further include one or more first fastening elements 125 attached to the mask base 105. Specifically, one of the first fastening elements 125 can be placed on the left of the aperture 110, and another of the first fastening elements 125 can be placed on the right of the aperture 110.

The first outer layer 116 may act as a front side of the face mask 101. The second outer layer 117 may act as a back side of the face mask 101 and can be used to contact the face of the user. The front side can face outwards with respect to the face of the user. The one or more first fastening elements 125 can be attached to the first outer layer 116. The face mask 101 may not be reversible, i.e., only the second outer layer 117 can contact the face.

The face mask 101 may additionally include two earpieces 130 attached to the mask base 105. For example, two earpieces 130 can be stitched to corners of the mask base 105. Earpieces 130 can be made of natural or synthetic flexible materials, such as an elastic, rope, rubber, fabric, and so forth. To fix the face mask 101 on the face, the user may place earpieces 130 behind their ears.

The mouth piece 135 can include two external layers 140, specifically, a first external layer 141 and a second external layer 142. The mouth piece 135 may further include one or more internal layers 145 disposed between the first external layer 141 and the second external layer 142.

The two external layers 140 and the one or more internal layers 145 can be joined together by means of sewing, stitching, sealing, gluing, and so forth. For example, the one or more internal layers 145 can be placed onto the first external layer 141, and the second external layer 142 can be placed onto the or more internal layers 145. This multilayer structure can be stitched together. For example, the stitching can be carried out along the perimeter of the multilayer structure of the mouth piece 135.

The face mask 101 may further include one or more second fastening elements 150 attached to the mouth piece 135. Specifically, one of the second fastening elements 150 can be placed closer to one edge of the mouth piece 135, and another of the second fastening elements 150 can be placed closer to another edge of the mouth piece 135. The distance between the second fastening elements 150 of the mouth piece 135 may be approximately equal to the distance between the first fastening elements 125 of the mask base 105.

The first external layer 141 may act as the front side of the mouth piece 135. The second external layer 142 may act as the back side of the mouth piece 135 and used to contact the face of a user. The front side can face outwards with respect to the face of the user. The one or more second fastening elements 150 may be attached to the second external layer 142. The mouth piece 135 can connect to the mask base 105 by joining the one or more second fastening elements 150 of the mouth piece 135 to the one or more first fastening elements 125 of the mask base 105. Therefore, the mouth piece 135 is a removable component of the face mask 101. FIG. 1 shows the face mask 101 with the mouth piece 135 in a position detached from the mask base 105.

The face mask 101 may further include a first secure band 155 and a second secure band 160. The first secure band 155 and second secure band 160 may be disposed between the first outer layer 116 and the second outer layer 117 of the mask base 105. Specifically, the first secure band 155 may be disposed in a portion above the aperture 110 of the mask base 105 and the second secure band 160 may be disposed in a portion below the aperture 110 of the mask base 105. The first secure band 155 and second secure band 160 may be made of a flexible material that can restore its structure after being bent. For example, the first secure band 155 and second secure band 160 may be made of a wire, a polymer, and so forth. The first secure band 155 disposed above the aperture 110 may press the mask base 105 tightly onto the face in a portion under the nose. Therefore, when the mouth piece 135 is detached from the mask base 105, the first secure band 155 may protect the nose from inhaling the air unfiltered by the mask base 105. Similarly, the second secure band 160 disposed below the aperture 110 may press the mask base 105 tightly onto the face under the chin. Therefore, when the mouth piece 135 is attached to the mask base 105, the second secure band 160 may protect the mouth from inhaling the air unfiltered by the mask base 105.

The face mask 101 may further include a nose bridge 165. The nose bridge 165 may be attached to the mask base 105 and can be displaced under the first outer layer 116. The nose bridge 165 can be fixed inside the mask base 105 by means of sewing, sealing, gluing, and so forth. The nose bridge 165 may be of a predetermined shape to accommodate glasses in order to repel moisture exhaled by a user from the glasses and to protect the glasses from fogging up.

FIG. 2 shows a front perspective view 200 of a face mask 101 of FIG. 1 with a mouth piece 135 in a position attached to a mask base 105, according to an example embodiment. The process of making the face mask can commence with taking measurements of a user by a manufacturer of the face mask. As an alternative, a user can provide their parameters by email to or share their measurements via another convenient way. Then, the user can choose a fabric or another available material or provide their own material for the face mask. Next, as shown in FIG. 2, masks are designed based on the measurements, cut out, and attached to each other as described above with reference to FIG. 2. Thus, the user may pick out the fabric from a list of CDC-compliant materials for the face mask and then the fabric can be custom fit onto the face of the user. The removable mouth piece allows the user to remain protected while the user eats, drinks, or smokes.

In an example embodiment, the user may order a set of similar face masks for an event for all the guests to have the masks of the same type, material, or color. The face masks may be ordered and/or used for any event including but not limited to a wedding, a party, crowded events, sporting events, concert events, large indoor and outdoor gatherings, going to a restaurant or any public place, enjoying daily life and activities, and so forth.

Thus, face masks with removable and partially removable mouth pieces have been described. Although embodiments have been described with reference to specific example embodiments, it will be evident that various modifications and changes can be made to these example embodiments without departing from the broader spirit and scope of the present application. Accordingly, the specification and drawings are to be regarded in an illustrative rather than a restrictive sense.
