New Guinea Impatiens plant named ‘Fisnics Magpink’
A new and distinct cultivar of New Guinea Impatiens plant named ‘Fisnics Magpink’, characterized by its outwardly spreading and uniformly mounded plant habit; low growth habit; freely branching and freely flowering habit; medium green-colored foliage; relatively short petioles; large, rounded, light red purple-colored flowers with light pink-colored stripes and margins; and flowers that are positioned above or beyond the foliage.
Botanical designation: Impatiens hawkeri.
Cultivar denomination: ‘Fisnics Magpink’.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTIONThe present Invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of New Guinea Impatiens plant, botanically known as Impatiens hawkeri, and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘Fisnics Magpink’.
The new Impatiens is a naturally-occurring branch mutation of a proprietary seedling selection of Impatiens hawkeri identified as code number K02-9331-2, not patented. The cultivar Fisnics Magpink was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a branch mutation on a single flowering plant within a population of plants of the parent selection in a controlled environment in Hillscheid, Germany in June, 2002.
Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by terminal cuttings taken in Hillscheid, Germany since September, 2002, has shown that the unique features of this new Impatiens are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTIONThe following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Fisnics Magpink’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Fisnics Magpink’ as a new and distinct Impatiens cultivar:
-
- 1. Outwardly spreading and uniformly mounded plant habit; low growth habit.
- 2. Freely branching and freely flowering habit.
- 3. Medium green-colored foliage with relatively short petioles.
- 4. Large, rounded, light red purple-colored flowers with light pink-colored stripes and margins.
- 5. Flowers that are positioned above or beyond the foliage.
Plants of the new Impatiens can be compared to plants of the parent selection. In side-by-side comparisons conducted by the Inventor in Hillscheid, Germany, plants of the new Impatiens differed from plants of the parent selection primarily in flower coloration as plants of the parent selection had lighter red purple-colored flowers without white-colored stripes and margins.
Plants of the new Impatiens can also be compared to plants of the cultivar Fisnics Pink, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 13,228. In side-by-side comparisons conducted by the Inventor in Hillscheid, Germany, plants of the new Impatiens differed from plants of the cultivar Fisnics Pink in the following characteristics:
-
- 1. Plants of the new Impatiens were broader than plants of the cultivar Fisnics Pink.
- 2. Leaves of plants of the new Impatiens were larger and had shorter petioles than leaves of plants of the cultivar Fisnics Pink.
- 3. Plants of the new Impatiens had larger flowers than plants of the cultivar Fisnics Pink.
- 4. Plants of the new Impatiens and the cultivar Fisnics Pink differed in flower coloration as plants of the cultivar Fisnics Pink had intense pink-colored flowers with a distinct red purple-colored eye.
Plants of the new Impatiens can also be compared to plants of the cultivar Fisnics Light Pink, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 13,579. In side-by-side comparisons conducted by the Inventor in Hillscheid, Germany, plants of the new Impatiens differed from plants of the cultivar Fisnics Light Pink in the following characteristics:
-
- 1. Plants of the new Impatiens were somewhat broader than plants of the cultivar Fisnics Light Pink.
- 2. Upper surfaces of leaf petioles of plants of the new Impatiens were pink in color whereas upper surfaces of leaf petioles of plants of the cultivar Fisnics Light Pink were green in color.
- 3. Plants of the new Impatiens and the cultivar Fisnics Light Pink differed in flower coloration as plants of the cultivar Fisnics Light Pink had light pink-colored flowers with a distinct red purple-colored eye.
The accompanying colored photograph illustrates the overall appearance of the new cultivar, showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photograph may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the colors of the new Impatiens. The photograph comprises a side perspective view of a typical flowering plant of ‘Fisnics Magpink’ grown in a container.
The cultivar Fisnics Magpink has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.
The aforementioned photograph, following observations and measurements describe plants grown during the later winter and spring in Hillscheid, Germany, under commercial production practice in a glass-covered greenhouse. Rooted young plants were planted in 12-cm containers and the aforementioned photograph and following observations and measurements were taken about three months later. During the production of the plants, day temperatures were about 16 to 20° C. and night temperatures were about 16° C. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2001 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
