A distinct cultivar of Papaver plant named ‘Fancy Feathers’, characterized by its upright and relatively compact plant habit; moderately vigorous growth habit; freely flowering habit; and large flowers with dark pink-colored petals.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present Invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Papaver plant, botanically known as Papaver orientale, commercially referred to as Oriental Poppy, and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Fancy Feathers’.

The new Papaver is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands. The objective of the breeding program is to develop new Papaver cultivars with compact plant habit and numerous flowers.

The new Papaver originated from a cross-pollination made by the Inventor in 2000 of two unnamed selections of Papaver orientale, not patented. The new Papaver was discovered and selected by the Inventor in 2001 in a controlled environment in Rijpwetering, The Netherlands, from the resultant progeny of the stated cross-pollination on the basis of its compact plant habit, double flowers and flower color.

Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by cuttings at Rijpwetering, The Netherlands since 2001, has shown that the unique features of this new Papaver are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

Plants of the cultivar Fancy Feathers have not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype.

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Fancy Feathers’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Fancy Feathers’ as a new and distinct Papaver cultivar:

• • 1. Upright and relatively compact plant habit.
  • 2. Moderately vigorous growth habit.
  • 3. Freely flowering habit.
  • 4. Large single flowers with dark pink-colored petals.

Plants of the cultivar Fancy Feathers differ from plants of the parent selections and other Papaver cultivars known to the Inventor, such as the cultivar Pink Ruffles, disclosed in U.S. Plant Pat. No. 12,712, in plant height as plants of the new Papaver are more compact than plants of the parent selections and other cultivars known to the Inventor.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2001 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. Plants used for the abovementioned photographs and following observations and measurements were grown in an outdoor nursery in Roelofarendsveen, The Netherlands, and under conditions which closely approximate commercial production conditions during the spring and summer. The photographs, measurements and observations were taken during June when the plants were about one year old. During this time, day temperatures ranged from 14 to 27° C. and night temperatures ranged from 7 to 16° C.
