Abstract

A new and distinct cultivar of Erysimum plant named ‘Lemon Zest’, characterized by its compact, upright and outwardly spreading plant habit; freely branching growth habit; early flowering habit; and numerous light yellow-colored flowers.

Cultivar denomination: ‘Lemon Zest’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present Invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Erysimum plant, botanically known as Erysimum hybrida, and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘Lemon Zest’.

The new Erysimum is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in Gensingen, Germany. The objective of the breeding program was to create new compact pot-type Erysimum cultivars with early and freely flowering habit.

The new Erysimum originated from a cross-pollination made by the Inventor in 1999 of the Erysimum hybrida cultivar Sprite, not patented, as the female, or seed, parent with an unnamed selection of Erysimum hybrida, not patented, as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Erysimum was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a flowering plant within the resultant progeny of the stated cross-pollination in a controlled environment in Gensingen, Germany in 1999.

Asexual reproduction of the new Erysimum by terminal cuttings in Gensingen, Germany since 1999, has shown that the unique features of this new Erysimum are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations of asexual reproduction.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Lemon Zest’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Lemon Zest’ as a new and distinct cultivar:

• • 1. Compact, upright and outwardly spreading plant habit.
  • 2. Freely branching growth habit.
  • 3. Early flowering habit.
  • 4. Numerous light yellow-colored flowers.

Plants of the new Erysimum differ from plants of the female parent, the cultivar Sprite, in the following characteristics:

• • 1. Plants of the new Erysimum are more compact than plants of the cultivar Sprite.
  • 2. Plants of the new Erysimum are more freely branching than plants of the cultivar Sprite.
  • 3. Flowers of plants of the new Erysimum have broader and more intensely-colored petals than flowers of plants of the cultivar Sprite.

Plants of the new Erysimum differ from plants of the male parent selection primarily in the following characteristics:

• • 1. Plants of the new Erysimum are more compact than plants of the male parent selection.
  • 2. Plants of the new Erysimum are more freely branching than plants of the male parent selection.

Plants of the new Erysimum can be compared to plants of the Erysimum cultivar Orange Flame, not patented. In side-by-side comparisons conducted in Gensingen, Germany, plants of the new Erysimum differed primarily from plants of the cultivar Orange Flame in flower color as plants of the cultivar Orange Flame have orange-colored flowers.

The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new Erysimum, showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the colors of the new Erysimum.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

The new Erysimum has not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.

The aforementioned photographs, following observations and measurements describe plants grown in Bonsall, Calif. in an outdoor nursery during the spring and early summer under commercial production practices. Plants were about 24 weeks from planting rooted young plants when the photographs and description were taken. During the production of the plants, day temperatures ranged from 10° C. to 32° C. and night temperatures ranged from 4° C. to 21° C. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 1995 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
