Abstract

A new and distinct cultivar of Geranium plant named ‘Sandrine’ that is characterized by yellow immature leaves that change to yellow-green and then to green when mature, a creeping habit and purple flowers with a black center.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Geranium plant botanically known as Geranium l. and hereinafter referred to by the cultivar name ‘Sandrine’.

The new cultivar is the product of a breeding program conducted by the inventor in a cultivated area of Hantay, France.

‘Sandrine’ is a hybrid that originated from the hybridization of the female or seed parent Geranium ‘Ann Folkard’ (not patented) and the male or pollen parent Geranium ‘Patricia’ (not patented). The cultivar ‘Sandrine’ was selected by the inventor in the Spring of 2005 as a single plant within the progeny of the stated cross in a controlled environment of Hantay, France.

Asexual reproduction by tissue culture the new cultivar ‘Sandrine’ was first done in the Summer of 2005 in Hantay, France. Since that time, under careful observation, the unique characteristics of the new cultivar have been uniform, stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations of asexual reproduction.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The following represent the distinguishing characteristics of the new Geranium cultivar ‘Sandrine’. These traits in combination distinguish ‘Sandrine’ as a new and distinct cultivar apart from other known existing varieties of Geranium.

• • 1. Geranium ‘Sandrine’ exhibits yellow immature leaves that change to yellow-green and then to green when mature.
  • 2. Geranium ‘Sandrine’ exhibits a creeping habit.
  • 3. Geranium ‘Sandrine’ exhibits purple flowers with a black center.

The closest comparison varieties are the parent plants. The new cultivar ‘Sandrine’ is distinguishable from the female parent Geranium ‘Ann Folkard’ in having larger flowers.

The new cultivar ‘Sandrine’ is distinguishable from the male parent Geranium ‘Patricia’ in having yellow immature leaves and a creeping habit. The immature leaves of ‘Patricia’ are green.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWING

The accompanying photograph illustrates the distinguishing traits of Geranium ‘Sandrine’. The plant in the photograph shows an overall view of a 12 week old plant. The photograph was taken using conventional techniques and although colors may appear different from actual colors due to light reflectance it is as accurate as possible by conventional photographic techniques.

BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PLANT

The following is a detailed description of the new Geranium cultivar named ‘Sandrine’. Data was collected in Beervelde, Belgium from 12 week old plants grown under glass greenhouse conditions. The plants were grown in 9 cm diameter containers. The time of year was Winter and the average daytime temperature was 12° Centigrade. and the average night temperature was 4° Centigrade. Color determinations are in accordance with The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart 2001 edition, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used. The growing requirements are similar to the species.

‘Sandrine’ has not been tested under all possible conditions and phenotypic differences may be observed with variations in environmental, climatic, and cultural conditions, however, without any variance in genotype.
