Abstract

A new and distinct cultivar of Osteospermum plant named ‘Fidostdebro’, characterized by its medium to compact and mounding plant habit; relatively short internodes; freely branching growth habit; freely and early flowering habit; large daisy-type inflorescences with deep bronze-colored ray florets; and good garden performance.

Description

Botanical designation: Osteospermum ecklonis.

Cultivar denomination: ‘FIDOSTDEBRO’.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Osteospermum plant, botanically known as Osteospermum ecklonis, and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘Fidostdebro’.

The new Osteospermum plant is a product of a planned breeding program conducted by the Inventor in De Lier, The Netherlands. The objective of the program is to create and develop new Osteospermum cultivars with compact growth habit, freely branching and freely flowering habit and attractive inflorescence coloration.

The new Osteospermum plant originated from a cross-pollination by the Inventor in May, 2006 of two unnamed proprietary selections of Osteospermum ecklonis, not patented. The new Osteospermum was discovered and selected by the Inventor as a single flowering plant within the progeny of the stated cross-pollination in a controlled greenhouse environment in De Lier, The Netherlands in October, 2006.

Asexual reproduction of the new Osteospermum plant by terminal cuttings in a controlled greenhouse environment in De Lier, The Netherlands since November, 2006, has shown that the unique features of this new Osteospermum plant are stable and reproduced true to type in successive generations.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

Plants of the new Osteospermum have not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in environment such as temperature and light intensity, without, however, any variance in genotype.

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Fidostdebro’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Fidostdebro’ as a new and distinct cultivar of Osteospermum:

• • 1 Medium to compact and mounding plant habit.
  • 2. Relatively short internodes.
  • 3. Freely branching growth habit.
  • 4. Freely and early flowering habit.
  • 5. Large daisy-type inflorescences with deep bronze-colored ray florets.
  • 6. Good garden performance.

Plants of the new Osteospermum differ from plants of the parent selections primarily in plant and growth habit as plants of the new Osteospermum are more compact in plant habit and more uniform in growth habit than plants of the parent selections.

Plants of the new Osteospermum can be compared to plants of the Osteospermum ‘Flower Power Bronze’, not patented. In side-by-side comparisons conducted in De Lier, The Netherlands, plants of the new Osteospermum differed from plants of ‘Flower Power Bronze’ in the following characteristics:

• • 1. Plants of the new Osteospermum flowered earlier than plants of ‘Flower Power Bronze’.
  • 2. Ray floret color of plants of the new Osteospermum was more intense than ray floret color of ‘Flower Power Bronze’.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPH

The accompanying photograph illustrates the overall appearance of the new Osteospermum. This photograph shows the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored reproductions of this type. Colors in the photograph may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the colors of the new Osteospermum. The photograph comprises a side perspective view of a typical flowering plant of ‘Fidostdebro’ grown in a container.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

The aforementioned photograph, following observations and measurements describe plants grown in De Lier, The Netherlands during the spring and early summer in a glass-covered greenhouse and under conditions and practices which approximate those generally used in commercial Osteospermum production. During the production of the plants, day temperatures ranged from 17° C. to 35° C. and night temperatures ranged from 15° C. to 25° C. Plants were pinched one time. Plants were nine weeks old when the photograph and description were taken. In the following description, color references are made to The Royal Horticultural Society Colour Chart, 2001 Edition, except where general terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
