Abstract

A new cultivar of Knautia ‘Thunder and Lightning’ characterized by variegated foliage with green centers and white margins, its short stature, its long blooming period and its bright red-purple inflorescences that are subtended by variegated involucral bracts.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Knautia macedonica named ‘Thunder and Lightning’ and will be referred to hereinafter by its cultivar name, ‘Thunder and Lightning’.

The inventor discovered the new cultivar, ‘Thunder and Lightning’ in October of 2007 in a container in his nursery in Kensington, Conn. ‘Thunder and Lightning’ arose as a naturally occurring chimeral mutation of an unnamed plant of Knautia macedonica.

Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar was first accomplished by culm cutting in Kensington, Conn. in 2007 by the Inventor. The characteristics of this cultivar have been determined to be stable and are reproduced true to type in successive generations.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the characteristics of ‘Thunder and Lightning’. These characteristics in combination distinguish ‘Thunder and Lightning’ as a new and distinct cultivar of Knautia.

• • 1. ‘Thunder and Lightning’ exhibits variegated foliage with green centers and white margins.
  • 2. ‘Thunder and Lightning’ exhibits a plant height that is shorter than the species.
  • 3. ‘Thunder and Lightning’ exhibits bright red-purple inflorescences that are subtended by variegated involucral bracts.
  • 4. ‘Thunder and Lightning’ blooms from early summer until frost.

‘Thunder and Lightning’ can be compared to its parent species, Knautia macedonica, which has foliage that is non-variegated. There are no other cultivars of Knautia macedonica that exhibit variegated foliage known to the Inventor.

The accompanying colored photograph illustrates the overall appearance and distinct characteristics of one-year old plant of the new Knautia as grown in a one-gallon container in Kensington, Conn.

The photograph in FIG. 1 illustrates the variegated foliage, inflorescences, and short stature.

The colors in the photograph may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description, which accurately describe the colors of the new Knautia.

DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION

The following is a detailed description of one year-old plant of the new cultivar as grown in Kensington, Conn. The color determination is in accordance with The 2007 R.H.S. Colour Chart of The Royal Horticultural Society, London, England, except where general color terms of ordinary dictionary significance are used.
